Anyone with firsthand experience know if I can use Safari on my home (or school) WiFi network without incurring data usage charges?

How about gps maps?

Thanks....

If you are connected to Wifi, then it should not use any data, but make sure that you are connected, and are in good range, or it might keep switching from 3G to Wifi.

Also, wrong forum, try the cell phone section.

From the Home screen go Settings -> General -> Network -> Dsiable 3G and Disable Data Roaming.

This way, its either Wi-Fi or nothing.

Uh, no. I believe this still allows edge data in your calling area.

GPS shouldn't use data unless it is loading the maps. And if you don't want to use data, why not phone rogers and tell them to put a block on your data?

Good point.

It will load maps all the time, assisted GPS will use data too. I've read in rfd someone requested Rogers to block data. But I dont know... a mistake by the CSR can be very expensive.

It will only load maps if you have wifi/edge/3G obviously. So what i am saying is it will use data for loading maps. If they mess up and don't block your data usage, you can hold them accountable, make sure you get the name of the person you talked to.

I'm not so sure about Maps but my friend with iPhone 1st gen at McMaster was able to access the school-wide wifi network from the phone using Safari, I know that hasn't changed with 3G.

GPS will work if you are connected to a local wifi network. But it will not work if you are not connected.

I think it still works, the GPS is independant of the maps.
The thing is, if the maps don't load, your essentially looking at your current location, which is a giant grey map with no streets.
Can't say the same if you have the data cached though.

I'm not on a data plan, I only use wifi and when I go to 'Settings' --> 'General' --> 'Usage' --> 'Cellular Network Data', it says I used 0 bytes [sent/recieved]. So I'd assume if it says 0 bytes for the Cellular Network Data, I haven't used any of Rogers data? Correct?

That should be correct, unless you've restored your iphone, because you could've used data before, and restoring it resets data usage.

My phone somehow got stuck with wifi only, couldn't use the 3G network.

reset your network settings if it gets stuck and you can browse on 3G.

How does Wifi know your location? Is this not the function of the Roger's cell network using their system to track you?

I always though GPS first had to have a chip which corresponds to the cell network.

It uses the cellphone towers nearest you and then determines your nearest location via ip.

The iPhone has an actual GPS chip inside it. So it can locate it based on that alone, and then also triangulate based on the cellphone towers, which does not require 3G.

Uh.. good luck trying to locate someone via their IP address. Nearest you could hit is Toronto or maybe the DSLAM or Cable office your wifi is connected to, which could be several km away.
