Hey Everyone,
Just spoke with Fido, and they have announced that they are allowing people to buy the new iPhone 3G without signing a 3-year contract starting July 24th, 2008. They were are many complaints from customers that are under a contract and are not eligible to purchase it on the day it was released up until now. Don't spend over $800+ on the iPhone 3G and buy it off those who already signed a contract just to make money because your wasting your time and money. The 8GB is going to be $499.99 +Tax and 16gb is going to be $599.99 +Tax. Prices are unconfirmed, because it can be more or cheaper. Look on the Fido or Rogers site when it gets more closer to the date.
Thanks for reading and have a good day!

I'll believe it when I see it. The last things Rogers/Fido has been over the last few years is consistent. They've completely kiboshed the entire iPhone ever since version 1 was initially announced. If it weren't for my retention plan, there is no way I'd be with them right now.

IF they do the no contract option im willing to bet it will be about 200 more then the prices you listed (unless the catch is that you already have to be tied into a contract to get these prices). Im glad they finally came to their senses if this is true. Not because I want one anymore but because it gives me a bit more leverage with Telus when I go to buy the Touch Diamond. LOL
Had rogers given me this option a week ago when the phone came out id (unfortunately) be a rogers customer right now.

So all the people who bought an iPhone and tied into the 3 year mandatory contracts will all be able to get out of them because they're well within their 30 day period?

$400 for the 8GB with a 2 years contract makes a lot more sense than $400 with no contract. As much I as love the prices to drop I just know that when two greedy business men like Steve and Ted are together, you shouldn't ask for a hot deal.

+1 This makes more sense.
HUP is $350 with a 3 year, +$50 and make it 2 years (1 year contract = $50 off) is consistent with previous phones.

If this is true, I just have to believe that the backlash Rogers faced previously for their original iPhone plans will be nothing compared to the venom they're going to face from the (according to their own marketing people) tens of thousands of customers who bought the iPhone and were forced to sign a 3 year contract.
Now, barely two weeks later, they're offering it no-contract?! I wouldn't want to work in Rogers' call centre when this hits the fan.

damn Rogers... called them and wanted to do a HUP - I'm eligible after 18 mths with my contract, which I'm at now... then they tell me with the iphone, it's a "special case", the HUP eligibility is 24 mths, so I'll have to pay an extra $40 for early HUP...

So they let you pay more to do an early HUP? They won't even do it for me even if I offered to pay more.

OP has definitely been misinformed or has mistaken it for something else. $399 for a 8gb is way too good.. it's gonna be at least $499 and up.. My best guess would be that the 8gb iphone will be $449.99.

My HUP was $225 for my 3g iphone and kept my original plan +$30 for the monthly data plan.
They will in no way sell the 8gig for $400! If and when they decide to do this, it will more likely be around $600 or more. Just take a look at any other GSM phone out there. The cheapest phone you can get new is $200 (at omega cell) and its a piece of crap.
Ill eat my own poop if they do this.

This for sure wrong the OP is very Wrong...
I talked to Rogers for my friend of course he was there and they told me there offering early upgrade fee's at 499 for 8g and 599 for 16g
Now this what they told me and this was a big no since all he has to wait till Feb... What a rip off.. Hes just going buy a iphone2g off ebay hehe then buy a 3g in feb he may save 100 bucks if he gets a good deal on ebay and maybe something later..
But anyways OP is wrong.

The OP's prices are wishful thinking. Insane wishful thinking.
Even the 1st gen iphones sold for more than that w/o 3g and gps. Plus apple products always sell at premiums, there's no way there going to be that cheap.
I don't think rogers is gonna bring out the no contract deals for a while anyway. Atleast not until september would be my guess since that's when the iphone will be sold by fshop and all the other stores.

It's is WAY too close to the release date for Rogers to already sell it for so cheap with NO CONTRACT, it came out on July 11th, and MAGICALLY 2 weeks later Ted Rogers thought he would be nice to all the small people out there and give such a good deal, I would believe it if the OP said in September, BUT 2 WEEKS AFTER RELEASE DATE, ROGERS IS A BUSINESS! Either the OP was high when he posted this, or the rep was high when he told the OP about this deal.

I just spoke with another Fido Rep, and they're like their not going to sell it without a contract. But however, they are coming out with options for people who are already under a contract and want the iPhone now. So this will benefit the people who are not eligible to renew their contract as of today. Make sense?
Lets wait, and see what happens tomorrow.

I just called the Fido retentions department and they said that the "deal" they worked out with Apple is that you must be on your current contract for at least a year before you can get an iPhone. I signed my contract last December so I'd have to wait until next January before I can get an iPhone. That is unless I pay the $600 cancellation fee and sign a new contract.
Ridiculous.
I'm planning on complaining and I suggest anyone else in the same situation does the same.

i just ordered 2 iphones on my end february 3 years contract so exactly 6 months minus 2 days which is not over a year like you said. One of the phones is on a new line created in that date. And i also got in february a 50$ credit per line for not getting any phone that I was NOT charge back today.

Trying to compare this with the HTC Touch Diamond.
I've heard some good things about the iPhone 3G but without a data plan and a non-tactile keyboard, it's kind of not what I need.
But it does seem like a very stable phone (iPhone) and has a great set of features, but seems rather dependent on a data plan. It seems also prone to smudging.
So.. HTC Touch Diamond vs iPhone 3G, opinions?

Fido is ridiculous. I'm a couple months short of 2 years on a 3 year contract, and they would offer it to me for an extra $60 fee. But here is the insane part, they want to add 3 years to the end of the current contract! 4+ year contract?? F*** those crooks. Whenever I renewed with Rogers or Telus they started the 3 years fresh.

I just called in, here's what I was told:
My facts:
-I'm on the $40/mo City Fido plan, and do not pay a system access fee
-I renewed my 2 year agreement on Feb. 29/08 (so, ~19 months remaining)
To get the iPhone now:
-I would have to start paying the system access fee ($6.95/mo)
-I would have to cancel my current contract ($360!!)
-Then I could sign up for a new 3 year contract and get the iPhone. ($199/$299)
So, if I wanted to get the 16GB iPhone now, it would cost me $694.88 now, and an extra $186.82 over the term of the contract (SAF+tax). This is without any data plan. $881.70 for an iPhone? I think I'll just get an unlocked N95 from tigerdirect for $399+tx!
Here's the weird catch though:
If I waited until there were only 12 months left on my contract, the cancellation fee would only be $35!! WTF?? Do those extra 7 months really make that much of a difference??? So, if I waited until late next February, I would pay $556.70 for the 16GB iPhone.
Argh!

So i'm like well.. i'll pay that damn 50$ and get it at 199, she comes back and say okay, we start your contract now (6 months later) and your eligible, no need to refund the 50! after she order it minus my fido dollars, which comes to near free (max date of reception is 3 august for me) I say i want one for my other line too.
I'm on a couple plan and the second line is new since that february 2008 contract, she say no problem!.
So I ordered 2 iphones, one per line, by changing my contract from feb 2008 to july 2008 and i didn't have to refund the 50$ credit per line that i got in feb (100$ credit)

PS. No, the Fido rep said she adds the 3 years plus the remaining period (14 months) = 4+ years

Yes you can, but if that is your intention, why not just use the original iPhone?? Unless you've already gotten rid of it... But it doesn;t make sense to sign a 3 yr deal (with data) if you're not going to use the data part of it at all. Unless Robbers is letting ppl sign without a data plan now.

I'm torn on getting the 3G or the first gen, even though I don't plan on using the 3G portion and blocking data, and just WiFi. The main reason for this is that I want the "true GPS" component. Looks like the 3G versions are going for about 200-300 more than the first gen (16GB version), so it's a lot of money for just gaining GPS.

data plan is optional
Data Usage - Your iPhone will be enabled for data usage. If you subscribe to a plan with no data included, data charges at a pay-per-use rate of 5¢/KB for data sent and/or received over the Rogers network will apply, unless you subscribe to a data plan, which we highly recommend.

Why not get an ACTUAL GPS unit, that way you will get one that should (in most cases) be better for GPS purposes, and will have txt to speech and other stuff. Costco has the Garmin350 for $199, which is a pretty sikk deal.
I don;t know the exact figure on how much data the iPhone GPS will use, (you should be WELL under the 6gig montly limit) but if you ever venture on down to the states or something, you will get murked on data roaming charges.

Or if you can unlock your phone, you can just get an AT&T SIM card and pay a lot less than the crazy roaming charges.

For the same reason to integrate a phone with an mp3 player. I want to limit the number of devices I have on me.
As far the GPS, it doesn't count against data. GPS works on simply receiving a signal from the satellite (no data is sent). So it will work anywhere in the world with no cost.

Thats how the actual GPS units work...but they only work that way if all the map data is already stored on the device itself (which is true for the Garmin/Tom Tom units - they can have upwards of like 2Gigs+ worth of maps stored on the unit), but the iPhone doesn't have these maps preloaded on it, so they will have to come from somewhere....which is where the data kicks in.

Thanks for clearing that up cuz I was about to rip him a new one  . But judging by his "all over the world" comment, I'm not entirely sure thats what he meant. Unless he plans on surfing googlemaps for a while before each trip.

Ahh..ok, good point. My experience with GPS in the past has always been with maps on SD flash cards, so I never really had to think about it.
It's still a lot more money for the new ones though, so I'm still kind of torn on which one to go with.

And I bought a used first gen iPhone the day Robbers announced their iPhone rates.

Ok, just to clarify - if I stop by a Fido kiosk to get an iPhone:
1. Have Fido block all data
2. Do not sign up for a data plan
3. Sign up for a voice plan
I will be able to use the phone as a phone, mp3 player, and use wifi only when it's available.
When there's no wifi (ie at work), I won't be able to check my email, surf the web, etc.... as that would normally go through the Fido network
Am I right?
Thanks..

if u qualify for hardware upgrade then you can probably get it by phoning in and asking the CSR
i didn't qualify for the upgrade jsut yet so i got charged $35 adminitrative fee, contract got extended back to 3yrs and i got the 8gb for $199
so a total of $199 + $35 - my 65 fido dollars = 170 for a 8gb iphone 3g =)

Lots of weird stories.
two weeks ago i called Fido, i was on a 2 year deal, and a retention plan from before my contract was up in December, you are able to redo a contract 6 month prior to the contract ending. I was Paying 35 for a couples plan + 6.95 x 2 + 15$ for CallID and Voice and text on all the plan. So about ~70$ a month for both phones. I got Data on my plan for 30 bucks more. Got two iPhones 8G, both was suppose to be 250$ since my retention plan both accounts were under 30 bucks, 20 for me 15 for her. I got one Phone for free with Fido dollars and 100$ discount for the data plan 3 year deal, and i got the other one down to 100 bucks. I then got the data plan for 25 a month.
so now i pay 95 for both phone tax in, and only paid 100$ for two phones.

This is almost the exact same situation that I'm in but I was told that I wouldn't be able to renegotiate my contract until January. Did you have to do anything special? Do you know who your CSR was?

I've called, ask for the iphone,
they say: you renewed in feb,
i say: i didn't get a phone in 4-5 years from you,
rep say: give me a moment, she comes back, say okay, we can start the contract now for 3 years and you can purchase the phone,
so for 6 months more contract i got my iphone without any penalty and i even had a 50+20$ credit per line in feb for not taking any phones, that's 140$ credit back then (feb 2008) plus i ordered two iphones right now, finished nice.
Still waiting to get them though.. they were suppose to be in stock.

regular couple plan, since the first line is 40 and the second is 15 i don't get the 50$ credit for the second phone, beside that, didn't paid crazy price, funny when i tell people i ordered 2 iphones there like, you paid a lot, i've paid 62$ for my iphone (fido dollar) and 249 for my wife one, i've took visual voice mail for both, which is the same price, so 6 moth addition and nothing else changed, i don't call that spending a lot

i've called telling that i'm gonna be charged for a service that i don't use (normal credit) and i've said that an email can't excuse the extra desagrements caused by that delay since i was told it was in stock AND shipped already, so i'm gonna have a credit for that too since they just lied to me from start.

i've been with fido since about 9-10 years, only bought a phone and a contract in 2002, which was a 2 years contract, didn't got any phones from them since that date and didn't renew the contract (they offered me squat), when i've had a line for a couple plan in feb 2008 they offered me free options, free minutes and 140$ credit so i've signed for 3 years (36 months), now i've called the 24th july 2008 and (30 months left to my contract) started a new 36 months contract.
So i "only" extend my contract for 6 months and they didn't charge me for the credit I've had before nor for the early upgrade fee that's been out that day.
edit: hey where is your post?? this was an answer to a previous post...

Do you remember which CSR you talked to? I've called about 10 times and every time they say one of two things.
1) Wait until a year has passed on your current contract, then re-negotiate a 3 year contract.
2) Pay the early termination fee (about $400) and sign a new 3 year contract which would wipe out any discounts applied to the account (about -$25 a month)
I signed up for a 2 year contract last December through retentions.

Why pay so much money for unlocked version?
There are a lot of people who buy unlocked phones and refuse to buy locked ones...but in the end, they still use it with only 1 provider.
You live in Canada right, and not Singapore or any other place.
The phone will be used in Canada 99% of the time (unless you are business traveler).
So what for do you want to spend so much money for on unlocked version when you will still be using it on Rogers/Fido only.
If you are hater of contracts like some people, you can get 8GB for approximately $500. It will be locked to Rogers/Fido of course.
Save your money and don't buy unlocked. Especially since iPhone's battery is not replaceable so over time, (like after a year) you will probably want to get rid of it and get another new toy like iPhone 4G or something like that...

Argh!
Well, I am in the same boat. I have the $45 CityFido plan and I am having hard time getting the iPhone from Fido. We are being discriminated for a plan that Fido offered to us itself. I feel like a second class customer every time I call Fido and ask for a new phone. They keep telling you that you are not paying the $6.95 system access fee. That's why you can't get a new phone.
My facts:
-I'm on the $40/mo City Fido plan, and do not pay a system access fee
-I renewed my 2 year agreement on Feb. 29/08 (so, ~19 months remaining)
You are indeed paying the $6.95 "System Access Fee". If you read the fine print of your contract it says clearly, SYSTEM ACCESS FEE IS INCLUDED.
That's a very fine line. So the $6.95 is already built-in to the $40 (or in my case $45) plan.
In addition to this argument, Fido stopped charging customers for "System Access Fee" while back ago.
Check out their website here: http://fido.ca/web/Fido.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=WhyFido
So basically, we have been paying an extra $6.95 a month to Fido and they are keeping this quiet. READ YOUR CONTRACT YOU WILL SEE.
We are being DISCRIMINATED by Fido/Robbers!
