I just got a brand new Honda civic and I would really like to drive it for the next 10 years...I have always put Shell in my car because it's a 'toptier' fuel and its got a pretty good reputation of being cleaner for the engine and also Honda 'recommends' it...But with the price of gas these days, I was thinking of getting the canadian tire gas advantage mastercard which could potentially give me 10 cents off every time I fill up...keeping that in mind...

1. How is canadian tire gas compared to Shell?

2. Will I be doing any long term damage to the car? (engine deposits etc)

3. How about gas mileage and performance? keep in mind i use octane 87.

4. Does it have MMT? How are its detergent additives?

All opinions are welcome and any insight into this matter is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1. I have been using CDN tire for the last 3 years with no issues .
2. I wouldn`t worry about engine deposits .
3. My wife uses 87 in our 07 ex and gets about 6.8L/100km .I use 91 in my 08 Si and get 7.0L/100km .
4. I don`t worry about and additives .

Your Civic will last ten years easy if you maitain it .I doubt gas will make much of a diffrence .Just use mane brand gas bars .

Shell was known to cause engine damage a couple years ago because of some additives. Canadian Tire piggybacks off of Esso as far as I know

Esso supplies Cdn Tire gasoline in the GTA.

Short shifting and easy on the gas is the key .I also drive about 75% HWY .

But I must admit I do hit 8K rpm several times a week .:cheesygri

Don't know if it's good but I get better mileage with ESSO than Shell. I drive 04 Nissan Altima.

w/ shell 87, my family's 06 ex gets like ~10.1L/100km... 100% city... driving like a regular person
w/ shell 87, my 01 sienna gets ~10.5L/100km... 75% highway... driving like a grandma everywhere

anyway.. esso isn't toptier gas retailer. dunno if they r under another company? but yea...

does 'toptier' mean something...or does it just mean that Honda is in bed with shell? well if CT gas is reasonable with performance and driving then i dont mind saving a few bucks.

I really think you will be hard pressed to find more than one refinery supplying gas to the GTA.

When the Esso refinery south of London shut down temporaily last summer, almost all stations on the GTA ran out of gas at the same time, and were all in short supply until that refinery reopened. It made a lost of people question who was supplying Petro Can, Shell, Sunoco, Can Tire, all the small brand stations as none were receiving deliveries of gas.

There is a site backed up by Honda that states that the following companies have ideal gas for its car:

shell
petrocanada
sunoco
chevron canada
75 or 74 (something like that)...

I can't find the link, but believe me it's true.

It has all to do with adding a detergent additive to keep the engine cleen.

Top Tier Detergent Gasoline

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is the premier standard for gasoline performance. Six of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.

I push to 5-6k daily, vtec a few times a week sounds about right. It's so tempting to just keep revving the engine. :D

LIESSS!!! You're scared of the damaging your rims over pot holes!

I am strictly a Shell V-Power user. I don't care if CT gives me 10 cents (I know, I know this is RFD); Shell all the way. Plus they give me free stickers :cheesygri.

Several people swear by V-power .It`s tough that it gives the most power .But for my commuting it`s a waste. The 8 cent discount and about 600L per month adds up.

Here is an extract from “Agenda” by Michael Hammer (2001), a very good book about business:
“With the recognition that virtually all gasoline, despite various advertising claims, is indistinguishable, oil companies buy and sell a lot of product among themselves to cut transportation costs and meet spot shortages. At the and of the month, every oil company sends a bill to every other one, and payments follow the reverse path”

It`s the Canadian Tire Advantage Mastercard .You use it to the tune of $1000 a month and you get 8 cents off a litre at CDT.

Petrocanada always for my civic.

I used to work at a CT gas bar. While the supply contract was with Imperial the deliveries usually came from either a PetroCan or Shell bulk terminal.

So does that make the gas Esso, Petro or Shell?

heiachi

So CT gas can be from other companies other than Esso. hmm...very interesting...according to CT, the detergent additive that is added to their gas is Tolad T 3306.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/affiliates/petroleum/en/on/additives.html

Any insight on CT's detergent additive vs Shell? thanks to everyone for all the responses so far.

my civic uses 7L per 100km. I try to go light most of the time, but go 120kph when I'm trying to avoid grid lock. If I know there's one ahead I got 90 or 100kph or cost, this is say 300m away, like normal people do. I see some gas all the way until they have to.

My driving is mixed 40% city, 60% hwy.
It's an older beater, but at high gas price times like these, its a gem.
