Did you try the yellowpages, google, kijiji, craigslist or even Mr. Obvious, a paint store? They usually have people they can recommend.

go to a local specialty paint store..of course..ymmv....

but normally if you bring some pictures of the layout/lighting condition and have a general idea of the colour of furniture, you may find someone (other than a highschool part-timer, that knows a thing or two...you also have to figure out what you want...i would recommend something neutral like biege...why?? cause it's easier to change throw pillows to accent your place than paint all over again...since it's a 1 bedroom, you want it to feel room and have the appearance of space...darker colours will not help in this case....
another question...is this owned or a rental?? reason i ask is cause you obviously won't get any return if it's a rental, so don't know if i would recommend the more expensive stuff....if you can wait, rona has a sale twice a year on paint, buy 3 get 1 free...however we got ours from HD's buy 2 get one free...i also now prefer the Behr from HD cause i feel it has better coverage when rolling...dif stokes for dif folks...

In terms of color, I don't know what I want, which is why I seek a designer or some sort, I wonder where I'd go to hire someone for cheap? I think that's where I should start vs. a painter because I don't know what colors yet...

Hey scoobydoo,

I agree with sienna owner that you'd probably be best off with neutrals in various shades and I'd carry that theme through the whole apartment for a unified look. Many of the paint stores carry cards that have actual suggested colour schemes of shades that work together. If you have a feature wall, you may wish to make that wall a bolder or darker colour.

Beiges, bisques, mushrooms, linens would all go with browns. You can add colour with cushions and accent pieces and those can change with the seasons.

Good luck. I always think the colour part is the best fun!

PS - I don't think you can get a designer for cheap. The ones I've been speaking to charge around $125+ per hour with a 2-hour minimum.

I just found a designer that charges 50 bucks an hour, should I just go with her? I think that's for a consultation though, I don't know if her hourly rates go up above that. 50 bucks an hour sounds okay actually.

I think it'll cost 1,500 to paint my place, so maybe 2,000 altogether? It's a lot, but...

i'd suggest to save the $50...it may be bait & switch...lol

try the local specialty paint store first....i'm not sure if you have them, but there are "benjamin Moore" retail stores that exist, and consultant from there will be happy to help you...of course you would make like you're buying from them...the bonus is that if you bring pictures to them, along with measurements, then they'll also give you an estimate on how much paint you'lll need...

Visiting a few construction showhomes would help you get a good idea on some colors.

To be honest, painting really isn't that hard if you wanted to paint yourself. Buying a good brush/roller and paint is key though.

if you want to save some $$ and buy your own paint...check on Rona's sale on the 21st of july

and because you don't know colour, don't do the tinting yet....you can always go back once you've selected the colour

Ask your realestate agent if they have a suggestion for a designer and painter. ours had a number of people she usually called, but make sure you're comfortable with them. We had one guy come over to look at removing wallpaper and he made a royal mess just checking the place out. In the end, I'll remove the paper and we'll bring a colour/designer for ideas. Painting isn't on the agenda yet.

Here's a suggestion:

First) What are your 3 favorite colours?

Second) Surf to http://www.behr.com/behrx/workbook/index.jsp, click the "Start Colorsmart" button, click "browse colours", click one that is close to what you like, click again on one that is close to your favorites, click "select this color", click "coordinate", click "select" agan. (Big square means your chosen colour is the main colour in the room. Little square means your chosen colour is an accent colour in the room.)

Now you will be presented with a range of complimentary colours. Click "more" to see...you guessed it...more of these. Click "select" to view that particular colour selection in a mocked up room.

Play around with it a bit and you can view some sample rooms with various colours in different places.

Then you can write down the behr colour names/codes and take them into any paint store and buy those behr paints or have them cross-matched to a different paint brand if you prefer not to use behr paint.

If you've got a Benjamin Moore store in the area, they often have designers they associate with that will give you a consultation for a reasonable price.

thanks guys, you've been really helpful, i'll get back to you when i can.

however, i have one question, i need someone to fix some holes in the walls in my apartment, i need to hire a drywaller for that or does a painter do it? (i'm assuming not.)
