I'm in the process of finding and sealing any leaks in my duct work. Should I be using duct tape for this? I've heard somewhere that it's not actually to be used for ducts. Is the aluminum tape better? Something else?

I recently took off the seal tape that was on my duct in order to get inside. They used that aluminum looking duct table which is available in any plumbing section of a hardware store (Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Home Hardware, etc.)

All ours were done with the aluminum tape. We also wrapped all of them with Roxul Sound batting for no noise a all!

Duct tape is a definite NO, despite it's name. Duct tape dries out and losses adhesion b/c of the heat. Plus it leaves a sticky mess behind. Duct tape isn't meant for duct work
Use the foil tape.

So they call that aluminum looking duct tape...foil tape? I'm not referring to the grey duct tape. Just trying to figure out the right name.

They also call it metal tape.

note that the backing is VERY sticky and as soon as it touches, it very hard to get off. Get it right the first time.

While you're at it, you might also want to make sure the duct sections are screwed together. If not, you should put a couple of screws in each joint as well.

I am reading about the mastic product for sealing ducts, which is a gooey substance that can be brushed onto the duct.

Anyone know where to buy this in Durham region, Ontario?
I only found the putty type mastic at Home Depot and Rona, which is not suitable.
thanks
