Besides IKEA, is there any contemporary furniture store in the GTA that you are aware of that don't leave a hole in your wallet? I'm interested in modern abstract/minimalistic furniture but I am having a hard time finding something that is as cheap as IKEA.

IDOMO (www.idomo.com)
On Sheppard off Allan Rd. just north of the 401.
It's definitely pricier than Ikea but probably the type of stuff you are looking for.

How much did you pay for your barcelona chair if you still remember?

I think you want modern furniture as the link people above me gave you are gearing towards more traditional, or little bit contemporary at the best.
The one cheap store that has the most collection of modern furniture is EQ3 on King West in downtown:
http://eq3.com/cat-eq3/process/locale/en_CA/currency/en_CA/index.html?id=P9nWjJxW
Modern design copied and manufactured in China, that's usually the only combo for a cheap modern furniture. And this is exactly what that store is all about.
Other then that, you probably have to join DirectBuy like I do, to get some good discount on a few high end brands from Europe like Italy.
Hope this helps

EQ3 furniture is actually made in Winnipeg by Palliser. We have a couch from them, and it's been fine.

Also EQ3 is not cheap from what I've seen, they seem like a premium furniture store.

Only seems like premium stuff but EQ3's furniture is no better than IKEA's if you look up close.

Thanks for the info.
We just purchased our bed frame along with the headboard for $398 at West Elm.
Loved the sales people in the store. They were very friendly and helped us to find the best deal.

Looking for a bed frame/headboard combo too. Do they use wood veneer on fiberboard or real wood that has been stained?

According to the website, our model is solid wood construction.
Originally we were going to buy Hemmes from Ikea but we are so happy with our purchase from West Elm. We love our new bed.

they just opened a couple months ago in Canada - toronto only
the closest one to Vancouver is in Oregon - a 6 hour drive :(
but always get something there when passing through :)
they are owned by williams-sonoma
they were sort of out there to take on IKEA - most of what you get at west elm you have to assemble yourself

Well considering I built every damn piece of furniture myself, I am used to it by now (coffee tables, beds, dining set, office desks etc etc)

Went into Crate and Barrel's Canadian flagship store at Yorkdale on the weekend. More expensive than IKEA but their furniture and accessories overall are a lot nicer. Definately worth a look.

I always wanted to go to C&B but Yorkdale scares me. I've never been there and I don't think the parking sounds fun. Any recommendations on how to survive the parking lot?

I went on Saturday morning around 10ish and didn't have a problem finding parking. But yeah, that mall is one busy place.

Exiting isn't too bad. You're from Mississauga so you would want to look for the Dufferin street exit by The Bay (west part of the mall), turn right and head north for a block or two until you see the 401 West ramp. Good luck, I know it can be jungle around that area but I'm sure you'll survive. :cheesygri

Real time furniture was recommeneded and mentioned on RFD a few times so we decided to check it out over the weekend.I have to say I loved atleast 70% of the stuff they had..........some was abit more expensive for our budget but its definitely a great place to check out. They give an 8% discount (atleast on sofas etc) if yo pay cash or debit and delivery charges were $80 in the GTA
Hope this helps

That's where I bought my bedroom furniture :cheesygri
They were great! It was late but their service was good and they were VERY accommodating, they even delivered twice because I told them I wanted my bed even though the night stands weren't ready and they did!

I recently checked out the Brampton store, and I was thoroughly underwhelmed. They're kinda like a ghetto version of IKEA. Everything seems to be a notch below IKEA in terms of quality and appearance. Furthermore, the staff are similar to Future Shop - talk your ear off, tough to avoid, and push you hard for the sale.

yes they are known for being the poor version of IKEA
they have huge stores in Europe
they are a starter store for furniture and stuff
I don't know why they would be so pushy they aren't commissioned - they are good for accessories and little things I find
i know that they carry the same desk as crate and barrel did - but it was 50% less at jysk and it was exactly the same

Funny, I searched for this thread just to post this store's site, and someone already beat me to it!
I just bought a few things there, after doing some serious price shopping, and could find nowhere cheaper. I'm in Burlington, and drive to Scarborough to buy there, that's how good the prices are. Nice guy to deal with, too.

I can't speak for myself...but 2 of my friends who have purchased at Structube said they will never step foot there again. Return policy is 'garbage'. The coffee table arrived damaged and because it was opened already, they weren't able to return it.
I'm just confused as to how you can return a damaged item if you won't know until it's opened...and if you can't return if it's been opened
