Hi guys,
these days I am looking for garage door opener, my garage door is double car size, so I think I need 3/4HP opener.
I found there are two openers:
1. Chamberlain, $329 (http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10299966&search=opener&Mo=2&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-CA&Nr=P_CatalogName:BCCA&Sp=S&N=0&whse=BCCA&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BCCA&Ne=4000000&D=opener&Ntt=opener&No=0&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1#)
2. Craftman, $349 (http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000FJGA8C/sr=1-0/qid=1215476872/ref=sr_1_0/103-5867251-2927005?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=APS), which one is promotion now.
It seems any one is ok.
I need some advice. thanks.

I am pretty sure we have that Craftsman....gotta love Sears for their hardware.
It's quiet, was easy to install and the keypad is a heaven sent.

Chamberlain makes Craftsman unit. But when you need parts in the future for repairs, its much easier to get them from Sears rather than Chamberlain.
The difference between the two units is that the Chamberlain has a battery backup system (not all that useful). But the motor is quieter then the craftsman unit because it's a DC motor as opposed to the AC motor in the other.
I would wait to get this when its on sale. Same unit as the Chamberlain from Costco, but the wall mounted control unit, is much better (replicates all the adjustment/program buttons found on the unit right on the wall.

Maybe you can wait for this one to be on sale? http://www.sears.ca:80/gp/product/B0012RX4MG/sr=1-8/qid=1215482486/ref=sr_1_8/103-3019491-2012658?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=APS
It has 3/4 horse power engine too although the web site doesn't show. The price can go as low as $230. I believe some RFD'ers got it at that price.

my question is off topic from the op. i have the chamberlain opener. on the wall unit controller, there is the "lock" button. what does that do? i dont have the manual and dont want to try it w/o know its use. also, the light takes 5 mins to go off? that is awfully long compared to a different chamberlain unit that i see.

On my unit, the lock button disables the opener remotes, and probably an exterior keypad (if I used one).
Why not try the lock button, and see if your remotes still work? It would be easy enough to unlock.

The lock , locks out the remote.
my chamberlain light takes 4 mins to turn off
but I set one of the button on the remote to turn the light off
and I turn off the light by pressing the light button when I walk away from the garage.
also I use energy saving lights bulls on it.

Does having more horse power help the garage door open quieter and faster? I have a single metal garage door and im not sure which HP to use.. 1/2 or 3/4. I need something quick&quiet.

Bought that one @ Sears Brossard last time it was down to 229.99$. I've installed it 3 weeks ago. Really quiet and easy to install. Comes with 2 L shape metal bars about 24" long each for the installation. I bought a bigger one to put on the ceiling @ Rona for 9$. Also bought a metal that I've cutted to reinforce the garage door. Probably not necessary but I had time to spare and cost me and extra 4$.
It's very quiet and powerfull for my 9 foot door. And also it looks nice.
At 229 it was the best price I've seen. It comes down to 249$ often.
Belt drive, 3/4hp, battery backup, you cannot go wrong.
I'll take a picture for you.

And replace the metal roller wheels (on track) for the white plastic style. Huge difference ... especially if there is a room above garage.

The horse power has nothing to do with the speed. They are pretty much all the same speed. Anything too fast would be a safety hazzard.
A belt drive is quieter than chain.
A DC motor (the units with a battery backup) are quieter still.
The most quiet unit I have ever installed is the 3/4hp red one from Chamberlain. Very very quiet.

Do any of you guys have any extended use experience with screw-drive garage door openers?
In my 1st house, I bought a Genie chain-drive garage door opener. It was the most basic model available. Installation was fairly straight-forward and the garage door opener worked for at least 4 years with no issues whatsoever. The only downside is that it was a little bit noisy.
In my current house, I knew I wanted a garage door opener once again but I wanted something a little quieter and better than the chain-drive, so I bought a Genie screw-drive unit. It was the most expensive unit available at Canadian Tire so I figured it was the best one. Install was easy and the unit, so far, operates perfectly. The slight downside is that it's not a whole lot quieter than the chain-drive version.
In retrospect, I feel perhaps I would've been better off going with the less-expensive but quieter belt drive unit. I hear that reliability and minimal maintenance are the major selling points of the screw-drive unit but I can't imagine the belt-drive units being much worse. Are belt-drive openers that much more quiet than screw-drive?

I have experienced a Chain and a belt drive system. With the belt drive no one knows when you get home:cheesygri
It's pretty pricey though especially if you have 2 or more doors. Sorry to hear about the screw drive that's what I was considering for my next house since it's supposed to be quiter than a chain drive.:(

Unfortunately, you are right. One of my neighbors has a belt-drive system and I don't even know when he opens or closes his garage door. :(
I can certainly live with my screw drive unit though, it works well and does the job. If I had to do it again, yes I'd probably go for a belt-drive garage door opener. I imagine the maintenance & reliability will be quite similar to that of the screw drive unit.
