My fridge's water filter needs replacement. I just search online and found out they are about $50 each!
Anyone knows where to get them cheaper? I don't mind to get a few at a time. Or if we can get it from wholesale, we can possibly even start a group buy.
The filter I need is PUR 4396841, which are for both KitchenAid and Whirlpool fridges.
I am in the GTA/Markham.

yeah I have to buy those damn filters too. Never thought about it until the fridge is sitting in my house needing a new $60 filter. I have been buying them on ebay through a guy outta Arkansas who uses the name "speedyfilters" there. He has been reliable and fast for me. If you buy bulk (He gives a better deal the more filters you buy), I think that I got my last batch for as low as ~$30 per including shipping. If you find something cheaper post back here! ;)
Otherwise, I have seen a couple of DIY videos, on Youtube and such, detailing how to refill your Brita filters with activated charcoal. I am wondering if the same cant be done with these filters too. For $30 a pop I am willing to give it a shot the next time a dead filter comes out of my fridge! >.<

Thanks alot, I will look it up on Ebay. Hopefully they have more.
I have a Whirlpool fridge with one of those filters as well however I haven't had to replace my filter yet (filter light is still green) but I definitely want a spare available.

I have a KitchenAid Fridge that has the option of running without a filter. I bought a whole house filter that is inline before the water get to the fridge which is hanging off the basement ceiling. I used a system from RainFresh (<$40) which allows you to select the type of filter you can use depending on your needs. Filters are about $10 when they come up on sale at CT or Home Hardware. The unit is fairly easy to install if you are not affraid of DIY plumbing.

I wouldn't buy any of these from Ebay as many of them probably either are reset or are counterfeit.

I think I too need to replace my fridge water filter, I guess my fridge water runs even I remove the filter from the fridge, so I am planning to go with Sunster's idea. Can some one suggest a small waterfilter which I can fix outside of the fridge? I need short in length so that it wont look ugly in my basement hanging from sealing I am not sure whether i can fix filter in flat direction instead of normal up direction. If i can fix flat to my sealing then I do not mind the size of filter.
By the way what does reset do on the filter? i some times press that button on the fridge panel but donno what it do to inside filter?

I bought the undersink Rainfresh model and just plumbed the waterline under the kitchen cabinets to the fridge. The dual cartridges are cheap on sale and probably do a better job.

Is this the place??

If so, I will check it out. Did you purchase yours there for this price??
edit: Shat, I had a brain fart. My fridge is a Kenmore, I'm SOL. The local Sears wanted something like 70 bucks for one. Fawk that.
Anyone know of a warehouse location for Kenmore parts??

Thanks for the info. It is a 106, so it is a Whirlpool ... however I phoned Whirlpool and that Clearance centre on Matheson has been shut down. Back to square 1.

damn it... i guess running the filtration on the supply line is the best bet. anyone know if the filter counter still works even if i am running the water without the filter inside the fridge? I like the use this feature to remind me of when to change the filter.

I found a place that seems to have decent prices. The filter that I use for my fridge (Kitchenaid) is cheaper than any of the stores I've been to...still not as cheap as getting it in the States.
Reliableparts.ca also has storefronts nationally. I hope the store has the same price as on their website. Any one shop here before?

well, looking at reliableparts, their kitchenaid filters appear to be exactly the same price as ordering them directly from Kitchenaid/Whirlpool, whirlpoolparts.ca
53.95 for the 4396841B
Doesn't seem any cheaper to me.
We just don't use the filter.

My filter light in the fridge has been blinking for the last two months! :)
I was looking at the Cyst filter (#4396710B) $47.99 vs. $65.95 on Whirlpool's website. Weird that the cheaper filter is the same price as Whirlpool's.
[edit] Whoa! I put the filter in the cart on Whirlpool's website and it shows up as $47.99. Anyone ordered this? Is it $47.99 or is it a price error on the website? I can't find shipping costs on the website, even after almost checking out (stopped at the credit card screen).

Always buy my filters off of ebay, never had a problem yet. By getting 6 at a time I can get them for about $15 each instead of 70 Canadian. They are the exact same ones

On the Whirlpoolparts.ca site you need to put the item in your card for the discount. Shipping is $6.95 - found after the credit card entry screen.

Been looking to replace the water filtration system under my sink (very old and cannot replace the filter). What did you look for when choosing the right system?
Items considered:
1) Cost and availability of filters
2) Flexibility in filter type selection (taste, sediment, etc)
3) Ease of filter change
4) Cost of filter housing
5) Capacity of unit
6) Ease of installation
As for the counter/indicator, my fridge appears to be set based on time and not usage. Every 6 month my indicator will change it's status.

Security Warning ==> http://www.ezwaterfilters.com/
The prices of this site seem a little too good to be true - they claim to charge same prices - but in different currencies depending on your location: i.e. 37.99 in USD for Americans, 37.99 in CAD for Canadians.
Problem is that the checkout process is entirely sent over in plain text. No Encryption used at all. So unless you like having your credit card information stolen, I would shop somewhere else...
For some reason, my Kitchenaid filter bought directly from Whirlpools online parts store costs the same as everywhere else - including Amre. 9.99 Flat rate shipping. (Tested with 1-3 filters in the cart... Not sure about more bulky items) Will post back on buying experience when the filters get here.

On second thought, might try visiting local Amre Location to see if I can buy it locally - avoid shipping charges altogether. I don't really like the way the Amre site doesn't list shipping charges. I guess you have to submit the order before you find out?

Visited Amre in Scarborough on the weekend - picked up two Kitchenaid Filters for 39.60 each. This was for the enhanced filter that filters cysts. Originally Listed at $43.99 - got 10% off for ordering 2 or more.

A 3 or 4 stage Reverse Osmosis system will do the trick.
Home Depot/Sears has several choices. Or you can get one professionally installed. It should cost no more than 500 - 700.

Is there anyway to trick the fridge into thinking that the filter has been replaced? The filter is supposed to last 6 months, but we don't use it as much.
My fridge is a LG... I removed the filter from the top-right corner of the fridge, but it back in, pressed and held the filter button for 3-10 sec. Nothing happened. It pisses me off because it seems like after the expiration, the water is no longer cooled. We've had some power outage in the past so I don't think cutting the powr off would do the trick.
Thanks!

My fridge (Kitchen Aid) has a button that i have to press a few times each time i change the filter. You could just do this and not change the filter.

I can't say for sure but unless you bought a really expensive fridge, I think it would be cost prohibitive for LG would put in a computer and sensor that could sense how "dirty" the water output is and then turn off the water cooler if it's too "dirty" and then only if the water is the right "purity" after you've put in a new filter, will it turn on to cool the water again. That's pretty sophisticated stuff for the normal cost of the fridge!
Instead, my guess is the "counter" is a simple gadget that counts down when turn on the water and, when it reaches zero, it will flash, until you reset it according to the instruction manual. There are no sensors or computers to test the cleanliness of the water, as that would be too costly to implement unless you have one of those high end fridges that can walk and talk at the same time. :D

I have a LG french door fridge and yes the reminder only measures the time passed. Since I have hook it up to reverse osmosis system, I change the filter once a year instead of every 6 months. The filters are so expensive and I can't go without filter in the LG which really sucks.

So how do you reset it? Do you hold the filter button for 3 sec? It doesn't seem to work for me. Maybe it's a defect...
