before and after but we are looking to rip the whole unit out and start fresh.

the unit is on an angle, comes out at about a 120 degree angle similiar to this picture: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/maths/shape_and_space/images/ss_a1_dia_02v.gif

we were thinking of getting a custom unit outfitted for that corner and not having the wood panels go all the way up the walls. so basically it would be similiar to the picture except only the bottom half of it will stay and wont come out at an angle but rather go flush right against the wall. any ideas or input?

With proper prep, you can paint anything.
As for an articulation swing arm for mounting a 42 to 47 inch TV well, be very certain you have sufficient structure to screw in the mounting plate. The weight of the TV, suspended outwards on a swing arm could rip out of a 2X4 stud very easily if not done properly. 40 or 50 pounds mounted against the wall is much less stress on the studs than the same weight suspended half a meter from the wall.

Yes, you sure can paint that. Use Zinsser primer (it sticks to anything) and just scuff sand and paint. Without knowing what look you are going for, if you want to add some interest, you can also add trim pieces to the shelf edges or the doors too, it depends on what look you want. You might also consider adding knobs or handles to the doors to change the look too. Right now it's got some really clean lines so if you are going for a modern look you could just paint and see what you think. If it was done in the right colour it could look very contemporary just as it is.

You could just make that counter top flush all the way across and put the flat panel on a stand on top of that?
