Hello,

We have a Schlage hardware door set that includes a deadbolt. We purchased it from Home Depot around 10 years ago (still looks like new btw).

We recently had a contract come into the house with a spare key. I would now like to get the hardware re-keyed. I read that this is possible through Home Depot.

Does anyone know how this process works?

How much does it cost?
How long does it take?
Is it free if I purchased it from HD, but cannot provide the 10yr old receipt?

Regards.

I just had 2 locks rekeyed.

I went to a lock/key/locksmith shop.. I brought the two locks in along with a key that I wanted to have work in them and he has done in about 10 minutes and charged about $20 for the 2 locks. The key I provided works great in it.

I think HD does offer this service for free at the time of purchase, but I would guess it would be out of the question for a 10 year old purchase. They would probably do it for a fee, but I would be much more comfortable going to a real locksmith with the job.

oh, and you can rekey it yourself as well. They sell the kits at HD that have all sort of little pins/tumblers or whatever they are called that you might need. I know they for sure had kits that would work with any Weiser lock.. I imagine they would have the same thing for Schlage as well.

No only Weiser Lock have the smart key feature that you re-key yourself ...for Schlage you have to take into home depot

Actually, Schlage has an easy rekeying kit for some locks as well...

But it's pretty cheap to have it done at HD as well. Last time I went the guy didn't charge me at all, as he was still learning and took a little longer than expected. ;)

i bought the kwikset smartkey locks (lever and deadbolt combo, and a knob and deadbolt combo). re-keying was easy, but unable to use the lever since i need the lever to point to the left (outside) and to the right (inside). since kwikset levers cant point a certain way, i bought the schlage sets. most of the home depots here doesnt do it, so i went to another chain hardware store (menards) and he re-keyed 1 combo set so all 4 locks shares 1 key. only took him 10 mins each lock and cost $5 each lock that need re-keyed.
