Looks like this maybe exclusive to Costco as I cannot find the model on the Hunter site. Images of the box:

It is not the same, but the closest I can compare it to is the Hunter Palermo (http://www.hunterfan.com/pages/product_detail.php?type=fan&model=21617&productId=660&pageID=1 ) with the following differences:

Moderna vs Palermo

50" vs 52"

4 blades vs 5 blades

Reversible Blade Finish: Black / Cherry vs Maple / Cherry

18W CFL vs 22W CFL

$120 (Costco) vs $475 (Home Depot)

Anyone know if Lowes carries this model?

Just bought this fan and it's great. Nice to have a remote control with the package and at $120, its a great bargan. Remote comes with control for light, speeds (3) and reverse for cooling/heating. It was easy to install and was almost balanced from the get go. Plus, if anything goes wrong, you have a great warranty from both costco and hunter for coverage.

I picked one of these up about five weeks ago at Costco for $115. Opened it up and put is straight back in the box and returned it when I saw the stupid bulb it was using. You won't be able to replace it locally and will pay about $25 to have one shipped from Hunter

Why the heck can't they stick with something standard?

I grabbed two -- the cool think is it has jumpers to allow multiple fan/remote combos - or both fans running from one remote.

As for the lamp - cfls last a long time. It does suck it's not standard.

The new GU24 mount replaces the traditional Edison (screw-in mount) for all new CFL fixtures that are classified Energy Star. While these bulbs are difficult to find right now, as long as the included bulb lasts about a year, eventually the stores will be full of them.

Basically, fixtures were classified Energy Star if they included a CFL bulb, so it saved electricity versus an incandescent. However, one could just replace the included CFL bulb with a normal incandescent, which totally defeats the purpose of the Energy Star certification. Therefore, they came up with the GU24 mount, which only CFLs and other special bulbs (eg. LEDs) use. That way, if you bought an Energy Star fixture, it would only be able to use energy-saving bulbs.

Given the savings compared to similar fans, I had no problem with buying this fan, but researched the bulb issue first. Worse case scenario: if you're handy with wiring, it's just one hot and neutral wire to the bulb...

And, except for little technicalities like code, if you have a switched overhead light you can install this and use the remote to operate the fan and light.

Great deal indeed. I actually bought three of these when costco was offering an additional $15 discount a few months ago.

I've installed two so far (one in the guest bedroom from scratch, and I replaced the fan above the 3rd floor stair well) the installation was fairly straight forward however, I found the instructions a little lacking in for the mounting of the fan, but I was able to figure it out. The fans seem to blow very well and operate very quietly. I'm really not concerned with the bulb as CF's last a long time, and even if a replacement bulb costs more in a few years, it will be more than offset by the great price of the fan!

I looked around at Home Depot, Rona and Canadian Tire, and there really isn't any other fan at this price point that compares!

Dang, I wish I'd done my research properly and I would have kept it. I only looked for the specific bulb they shipped with the fan and could only find one supplier in the US. I even emailed Hunter and they gave me a part number and price to order from them but completely omitted to explain that this was a new standard that was rapidly being adopted. Now searching for GU24 yields a number of alternatives.

It seems like no one on this thread took advantage of the "every kilowatt counts" program in Ontario. There were a bunch of coupons mailed to households and availabel online : http://www.everykilowattcounts.com/residential/powersavings/

I picked up two of these fans at $115 (minus the energy star $15 instant rebate). So I got them for $100 each.

It's too bad the promo is over, but the website says that they will have a new program in the fall.

This is not the only reason for the GU24 mount... the point of the GU24 mount is it also lets you / the manufacturer

A) replace the bulb without replacing the ballast
B) eliminate the overhead of thee dison screw-in allowing a more compact bulb footprint

(A) is the big point here. The ability to replace a bulb independent of the ballast allows the consumer to save on pricing eventually once these things start to ramp up in volume.

for those that have bought and installed this fan...

can you adjust the mounting position? Ie: tuck the fan closer to the ceiling by omiting that ~6" tube?

I've got a lower ceiling where i'd like to install this fan...it loooks like it may sit a bit low for me. does someone have the installed measurements - From Ceiling to the bottom of the light.

No, I didn't see a way to remove the tube, so it is not a flush mount. As for the measurements, its approx 15 inches from ceiling to bottom of light fixture

The fan is extremely quiet. You only really hear it when its on high speed and all you hear is the rush of the air moving.

Thanks for mentioning those additional points. I read some of that while googling GU24, but the Energy Star thing was the big thing I remember, mostly because when I started to see Energy Star fixtures, I recall thinking "that's stupid, all they did was include a CFL bulb and called it Energy Star". The only thing about (A) is that it appears to be optional. I also bought a new flush mount ceiling light fixture from Costco a couple of months ago and the GU24 mounts were direct wire, so no ballasts. The two CFL GU24 bulbs included were self-ballasted.

I'm not going to climb a ladder to satisfy my curiosity, but I'm pretty sure the CFL bulb included with this fan is self-ballasted, as well.

My husband spent almost 4 hours installing this friggin' item. It was a very difficult thing to master the weight of the motor and the sheer volume of wires that had to be shoved into the small cap that was provided to accommodate all of them. In the end, he had to cut off the excess, rewire them, and then was able to get the wires into the cap. It works well NOW, but it was much harder than it should have been.

This looks quite similar to the one WM had in for $70 a little while back (it was in their flyer) remote controlled and all.

Edit: Looked around and all I could find was one from the .com site 54" - remote and all $90 USD (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9192875) but I'm pritty sure that the one they advertised before in their flyer was more like the costco one and I remember it was less than $70.

Yeah, it is quite a bit harder to install than the other Hampton Bay fan that I got from HD. The wires are just too long and definitely need to be trimmed and stripped to fit. It is also heavy and awkward to put in the 3 screws at the top with hardly any clearance. You will need a helper to hold the fan while you mount the unit to the ceiling.

The instructions indicate to install the blades first before putting up but it is easier to install the unit if you leave the blades off and put them in after the unit is secured to the ceiling. It is also NOT possible to remove the extension for a flush mount.

Timely thread because I have a wobbly fan that needed replacing.

So I bought and installed this today. Installation was easy - about an hour. However, three problems I have noticed.

1 - the fan isn't that quiet. I get a low frequency, rhythmic hum when the fan is on. I have a Casablanca and a Monte Carlo fan in other rooms and you can't hear them running at all.

2 - the fan won't start by itself. I have to give the fan blades a little kick start. I think I have a defective unit.

3 - the instructions on polarity of the battery in the remote are wrong. They had a 50/50 chance on this one and they blew it.

I think it's going back to Costco on Monday.

The reason they left the cables long is so if you decide to buy the extension rod to hang the unit lower off of higher ceilings, you don't have to twist in extensions.

Sounds like a bad motor. Both of mine are silent (on 1st and 2nd speed) and neither need a kick start.

I bought two of these units yesterday and had them both installed in just over an 90 minutes. Hardest part I found of the installation was installing the fan blades in one of the two units.

My only complaint is the light isn't that bright.

posessed :cheesygri ? I think you probably had a quick power outage that cut off power to the wall switch when you were away. We actually use that "feature" occasionally by flipping the switch off then on when entering the room at night to turn on the light since it's easier than trying to find the remote in the dark :D .

When both the light and fan turned on during the night, did you leave the remote somewhere on your bed or under the pillow and unintentionally hit the buttons while you were sleeping? The remote is RF and not infrared so it could activate the fan when under the pillow too.

How does it work with the remote? Can you turn on the light from the wall switch and then use the remote to control fan speed only? Or does everything has to be done using the remote?

The remote has 4 buttons for the fan: 0ff, speed 1, 2 and 3, and a single button for the light that toggles it on and off.

and it is not happenning because of a power surge or accidental touching of the remote.

I emailed Hunter and they suggested I try another address. Three days and so far so good.

I bought one of these last week, went to install it and noticed that the glass was cracked. I returned it yesterday and found out the NW Calgary store didn't have any more. Does anyone know if there are any left in Calgary?

What you should've done is phoned Hunter as they had mentioned in the user manual (if parts were missing) and they would've shipped you a new one (usually without cost). Please see my avatar.

I picked up one from the Markham Location. Both Markham and Scarborough had a skid left each. I may go back and get another one.

Thanks Shingo for the info. I went to the East Markham store and picked up 2 of these. There should be about 5 left in the store.

The store at Woodbine and HYW 7 does not have any.

Wish I would have read your post before yesterday.
I had to do the same thing, take the fan back down and trim all the wires by about 2' to get them all to fit in the cap.

Times like these I am glad I am not the only one.....spent well over 2 hours trying to shove all the wires under the cap - couldn’t do it. Thought I would share my experiences today with everyone.
I did the exact same thing in the end, cut all the wires 2' and then it was a breeze.
In the end, bought 2 of them from the Vaughan location (they still had about 10), but call before you go, they will notify you of any stock). Great fan, thanks for the post!!

I went to buy this but then saw it was one light. I see one comment on the light not being bright enough - does anyone else share these sentiments? Will the light suffice for a master bedroom?

Oh man! I couldn't fit it all in the cap so just left it hanging over the top but it keeps getting snagged by the blades. Now I know what to do with it all LOL.

Can someone tell us how wide the unit is once installed? Or from the centre of the light to the end of one of the fins? I have a tight space that I'm thinking of putting this into and would appreciate the assistance.

Thanks.

About to show my ignorance (read, stupidity) when it comes to electrical. The ceiling fan I have now does not have a light...would the existing wiring be enough for the light to work in this fan?

Thanks!

Since it is a 50" fan, it would be 50" across ie from tip to tip of the blades.

This fan is designed to run off of one power connection(One hot, one neutral, one ground) so it'll be fine. The light on this is a fluorescent so it'll have very little power draw.

I'm concerned about this as well. Can the 18W be swapped for a brighter bulb if necessary? I suppose it depends if the ballast is in the fan or the bulb.

Has anyone seen these recently around the GTA? I would like to pick one up.

I was just wondering how important is it to put that wire around the brace (2x4 stud) to secure the fan when installing. I don't know how to access it.

thanks

It's a safety precaution, and feature that aids in the installation, so you can let it hand, while doing the wiring. May be required for some, no for others.....may depend on how many hands you have available.

Has anyone tried replacing the included 18W GU24 bulb with something brighter? Is there room for larger (higher wattage) bulbs? I found this 27W replacement (http://www.rejuvenation.com/fixshow99939/templates/selection.phtml) online.
