I just rebuilt my PC after my original motherboard burned out. Everything seems to be running fine with the exception of the Stanby/Hibernate function -- I can't seem to ge the system to go into one of these modes. I tried to do it manually and to have it done automatically but nothing happens.

I reinstalled my COM1 drivers and checked the net for other tips but still can't get it to work.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could try next?

Have you checked the Windows settings to enable Hiberation? APCI.. ASPI ..something mode has to be on as well.

At least on Vista, you have to install the video card driver to use standby/hibernate. I don't remember if XP is the same.

You said your motherboard burned out. Did you set the power settings in the BIOS on the new motherboard?

That happens when some devices are set to wake up the computer. The common ones are mouse, keyboard and ethernet. Also, check your BIOS to make sure the wake up settings are set properly.

Also, make sure you're running SP1 or at least have all the major hotfixes installed. There have been several fixes for standby issues.

Okay, seems like its fixed. Not exactly sure which step (probably the last one) did it but this is what I did:

- installed the latest drivers from the ATI website for the video card
- installed SP3 for Office
- made sure that WinXP had all the latest high priority updates
- ensured that ACPI option was 'Enabled' in BIOS
- deselected Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop from Windows Firewall
- 'cleaned' system with full scans using AVG antivirus and Ad-Aware (nothing serious found, just the typical trackers etc)
- used freeware called nCleaner to stop any programs that I don't typically use from starting up at Start-Up

The odd thing is though: the Standby function still takes a minute or so before kicking in after I manually choose it, but the system does eventually go into Standby

Hope something here helps someone in a similar bind
