View Full Version : Radeon HD4850 + Accelero S1

So I picked up one of the Diamond Radeon HD4850's from NCIX and apparently all the 4850's run incredibly hot. Mine runs 78C idle, 86C load. It's very quiet idle, but fairly loud on load. After running it for an hour the sticker covering the heatsink started to curl up in a couple of places.
So I took it apart and threw an Accelero S1 on there, no fan. I had a few extra ramsinks so I put them on the VRMs. The difference was amazing: 46C idle, 63C load. For anyone considering it, well worth it!

What happens if you strap a fan to the S1? :-0

I just bought a Visiontek 4850 and i had a AcceleroS1 but haven't put it on yet because i was not sure if i absolutely needed to have cooling on the VRMs. So Do I need to cool the VRMs or not?

It would probably be a good idea to put some heatsinks on them. From what I've seen, they can get rather hot. You might be able to get away with using a fan to blow air directly on them but, if you can, you should put heatsinks on them, for sure.

That's the problem I don't have any heatsinks to go on them the ones i have are for the older cards. so I guess I will have to get some or modify the ones i got.
But Thanx for the help.

Also consider a slot fan for just below the video card. I have a $6 slot fan under my passively cooled 7950GT. It easy cools the video card by 15-20*C without adding a lot of noise.

I have a 120mm fan zip-tied to the accelero which does very well.

Can you post screenshots of GPU-Z sensor page for idle and load?

Thanks. What are you using to test load temperatures?

ATITool 3D View. Don't use the artifact tester - it only brings the GPU load up to 92%.
I have not found any program that heats up or increases the power consumption of the GPU more than ATITool.

I think FurMark is more taxing than ATITool.
