I am about to order a Sandisk Cruzer Titanium flash drive... but I am wondering, since the part that connects to the computer is still technically exposed (no lid or anything) cant it be damaged in your pocket?
Cant little things just get into that space and mess it up?

Well, once you retract it, I think it's rather tough for something to just accidentally slide into the USB port and slip and slide around enough to damage anything. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Had mine for a little while now. 4gb Cruzer Micro. Never had any issues, and it gets thrown around a fair bit as it stays on my keys.

had two rect usb sticks and none of them broke..
had 2 cap usb sticks and i lost the cap in both of them.. the good thing is that i lost the drive soon afterward, which gave me a good exuse to buy a new one.
