Jun 27th, 2008, 09:22 AM
Seeing as the other thread for this is dead, I have decided to start another thread with regards to the free wi-fi spots in the GTA area.
This is in the interest of advancing thread: http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=325036

FOR ALL WIFI ADDITIONS, PLEASE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFO:
- location:
- hours:
- condition:

Providing it in this format will make my job 10x easier since i can just copy and paste your post

From jackie26:
Here is a link that gives you hotspots all over Canada, and shows which ones are free.

Select the province and then the city. Take it one more step back and you can look in other countries too.

http://www.jiwire.com/hot-spot-direc...m?country_id=1

or use this link
http://studenttravel.about.com/gi/dy...-canada-ca.htm

Starbucks has 2 hours free wifi for people with a starbucks card and free unlimited wifi for bell subscribers.

2 hours of Free Wi-Fi at Starbucks with Card (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=621163&highlight=wifi)

Free Wifi for Bell customers in participating Starbucks locations (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=621162)

for starbucks, you use the number on the back of the starbucks card. and for bell users, I think you use your password and username that you register with Bell.

For the Second Cup one, what do you mean by $9/hr. Do you have to buy at least $9 of stuff every hour. Or do they charge you $9/hr for wifi - which doesn't make it free anymore and probably doesn't belong in this thread.

an update to gofortea, you can technically get wi-fi there all the time, because when their networks are 'down' you can always connect to brix which is next door, and also provides free wifi.

destiny tea house which is pretty much across the street also offers wifi, with the exception on friday and saturdays?

i saw that the Markham Wifi was a bit incorrect. Not all Markham Public Libraries have free wifi.

"Markham Public Library offers wireless Internet access across all branches except Thornhill Village Branch. Free Wireless Internet service gives customers with laptops, PDAs or other mobile devices an alternative for accessing the Internet in the library. There is no time limit on using this service in the library and a password is not required – simply launch your web browser to establish a connection. "
http://mpl.markham.ca/wifi_faqs.htm

also, it does not appear that you need a library card. the details to configure ur laptop are explained on the FAQ

Dufferin Mall (http://www.dufferinmall.ca/Store.aspx?parent=4&StoreID=188) just launched free wi-fi too. Service is provided by FatPort (http://www.fatport.com/) and they have contests right now to win an Ipod, etc. Signage indicated that coverage area is primarily the food court.

In response to the demand for access to the Internet anytime & anywhere, Dufferin Mall has introduced free Wi-Fi access for its shoppers. The new Wi-Fi service is available to mall visitors free of charge. Customers with laptops or Wi-Fi enabled devices will now be able to surf while at the mall. Users connect to the network through an access code, or FatCode, that is provided to them by the Mall’s Guest Services. The Wi-Fi connection is available throughout the shopping centre’s food court.

I'm typing from Wall Street Coffee Roastery at 45 Carlton St. right now (near Yonge & College/Carlton). Free wifi here, plus the coffee selection is pretty decent. Very nice interior. I'd much rather come here than Starbucks which is near by, who would charge you for wifi (unless you are with Bell, in which case I pity you and encourage you to switch immediately). Password is required and it is "fresh".

Well, this is at least true for the downtown location at Yonge & Dundas. I can confirm that there is an unsecured network there that you can log on to. I was eating at the Chipotle Mexican Grill next door and tried to pick up a signal if there was any, and it was Future Shop's.

Thought I'd add a few Shopping Mall hotspots... I reckon most malls would have some kinda unsecured network running somewhere but here are few I can confirm:

- At Yorkdale, Sony store has an open network that you can go into... pretty helpful if you are waiting on someone else who is shopping or something. Actually, I believe a lot of the Sony stores have open networks. Also, I think the Apple stores may have some networks open, since I've seen many people browse the net in their laptops beside the store.

- At Centrepoint mall (which is now pretty much dying out, unfortunately), there is an open network in the food court. No idea which store the network is based on, it could be the The Source, but I was surfing there on my Ipod Touch (which is crappy for picking up signals mind you, so it must have been a decent signal) and having lunch there today.

More wifi places (I just love going around with my Eee 900 looking for hotspots!)

Green Grotto Tea House: It's at Steeles and Warden, in the same plaza as I Cook Buffet and across from Boston Pizza, T&T, etc. It's a standard Bubble tea place, with the usual menu but the places is nice and cozy... not too big, not too small, not too noisy. They got a lot of reading materials although I think they are mostly Chinese stuff that I can't read. They even got a free foosball table (although it's not a good one... but hey, it's free). Oh yeah, free wifi. It should be available at all hours I believe. It's a secured network, and password is greengrotto. On weekdays they open until 1am, on weekends they close at 2am.

Toronto Pearson International Airport: Yeah, they actually got free wifi, but there is a time limit for each day, I believe about 30 minutes or so (you get one 15 minute session and you can renew it once). Basically what you have to do is select the Boingo hotspot, click on the free trial option, then click on the ad once, they you are good to go. What sucks is that it is not unlimited, but hey, 30 minutes free ain't bad. Gives you something to do while waiting to pick someone up at the airport at least.

Oh, that's good to know. A new Apple store opened recently in Fairview Mall as well, so if they are like the other ones, then this should have free wifi as well. But unfortunately with my Ipod Touch, I could not pick up any open signal from the food court (but then again, range on the touch is craptacular).

Yeah, kinda sad Centrepoint is seemingly rotting, since it's a mall I grew up with and visted most frequently (because of proximity). Loblaws closing doesn't help, but at least a new No Frills will open soon. But Shopping Malls are more or less thing of the past now and most small ones will probably bite the dust within the next 10 years or so I'm predicting... but I'll never forget Centrepoint. Still remember when they had the movie theatres, Sam the record man, etc.!

Hi,

Seeing as my lunch always consists of a quick sandwich and/or salad and then back on the road, I stopped at a Select Sandwich in Toronto last week, and noticed they had free Wi-Fi. The owner told me that every location has a free managed Wi-Fi service through a company that gives an open service. Since last week, I've stopped at 3 more Select Sandwiches while on the road, and it's TRUE, all of them are free wi-fi with no password or log on required!!
