kind of cold to me ...

It's free on a 3 year contract and you need to keep the VOICE & DATA for 3 years (really sucks if after 3 months you decide that you like having the phone as a PDA but really don't use the data much ...

From what I read from the Telus FAQ's you are obligated to keep the data portion for a minimum 12 months on a 36 months contract, if you do not it's a $100 charge.

Telus FAQ's (http://www.telusmobility.com/on/pcs/term_contracts_faq.shtml)

What if I want to terminate my service?

If you choose to terminate your service before the end of the term, you will be required to pay (as liquidated damages and not as a penalty) a cancellation charge for each terminated phone number in addition to all other amounts then due to TELUS Mobility. The cancellation charge will be the greater of:

$20 multiplied by the number of months remaining in the term, or
$100

If you subscribe to a data service with an email feature and cancel that service within the first 12 months of a 36 month service agreement, an additional cancellation charge of $100 will apply. The cancellation charge must be paid whether the service is terminated by TELUS Mobility or you.

So even if you cancel the data plan after 1 month, it is still a good deal. $100 for a BB Pearl 8130.

Telus FAQ's (http://www.telusmobility.com/on/pcs/term_contracts_faq.shtml)

Thanks for the info - I hadn't realized that it's only $100 (which would actually make this a pretty good deal as others have pointed out) but I'd confirm that it's all you have to pay (the Telus FAQ specifies an 'additional $100' for data plans - maybe that means that you pay the cancellation fee on the data plan (i.e. $15-$20/month + an extra $100). It would be worth checking into.

next year the prices of cellphone plans will drop dramatically. signing for a 3 year contract right now isn't very smart.

unless of course you need this blackberry or you don't really care.

New spectrum opening up.

Loomy

lower cell phone prices because of new spectrum opening up

the above is crazy speculation, ignore it. new spectrum is so far detached from phone prices it is ridiculous. and before you can even use the new spectrum, new infrastructure has to be built.

that said, the fact remains that no cell phone is worth locking yourself into a 3 year contract. if it was, they wouldn't be doing it. it benefits them, not you.

buy your phone, buy your plan. switch plans when better deals pop up, thus spurring competition and getting yourself even more deals.

What is the problem with your Pearl? I though the Pearl and Curve were very similar with the exception of the QWERTY keyboard on the Curve?

Yes, same question. I know little about the blackberrys but starting to shop now.

They have same system, trackball, camera etc. The Curve hat the QWERTY keypad and it has wider screen, but the Pearl is smaller.

Not true. See http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008/05/26/tech-spectrum.html

New entrants will also benefit from two other Industry Canada rulings. Existing carriers will have to rent out space on their cellphone towers at reasonable rates to new players. They will also have to sign agreements that allow the customers of newcomers to "roam" on their networks, again at reasonable rates.

As we all know, the term "reasonable rates" in Canada means "Bend Over".

I think the rates will be as reasonable as those that Bell charges resellers like Teksavvy for the use of their copper for DSL access. Given Teksavvy's end-user rates, Bell must be forced to make the rates pretty reasonable. I'm optimistic that there will be increased competition next year. but only time will tell for sure...

for what its worth, i talked to telus today and they confirmed you only have to keep the data portion of the plan for one year of your 3 year deal

they will also give you the extended deal of the boxed version of the pearl which has a USB cable, case and headset for free if you ask nice (like I did)

AND

they waived the $25 fee for transferring from older phone to the bb.

Give me a break, he implied phone prices would fall soon because of the spectrum change. Totally crazy wrong speculation. And what you just posted is not about phone prices, it is about service prices.

I used to believe that (never signing a contract), however it really depends on the kind of deal you are able to haggle out of these CSR's.

For example:

For my 3 year contract I just signed:

Free motorola Q9 H
Free year of unlimited local calls
6 months of unlimited data usage

Free Caller ID with name display
Free Call waiting
Free Conference call
Unlimited text messaging
200 daytime min
1000/week/eve
unlimited incoming
unlimited emailing
4mb of surfing on 3g

For 50 bucks a month.

PLUS

My contract only requires me to stick with them for 36 months with $20 min monthly. This is huge as it allows me to switch plans around later on if I wish.

I never used to sign contracts because I was very aware of the traps they pull you in, but I think I did a good job of negotiating this time.

A somewhat deal related question.. I want to buy a used Pearl that has supposedly never been activated. I want to use pay-as-you-go no contract. How can I ensure I'm not buying a phone someone picked up on this deal? I can't afford to find out later that I'm expected to maintain a $40+ monthly plan w/data.

I can answer my own question... Just about any customer care rep can verify the esn over the phone. There's also indicators in the phone and on the battery to warn you if it has been wet.

Anyway... Turns out you can't put a blackberry on pay as you go. All I wanted it for was texting. I will have to sell it and get the gsm version. grrr.

If you need a phone for texting I think it is not a good idea to buy a Smartphone for that only and pay for data as well. There are fasttap phones that are designed for texting. You should go with one of those.

They have CDMA version as well. Blackberries are coming out in CDMA too not only in GSM. The world version the 8830 works with a GSM card as well and you can replace the card if you are in Europe or Asia with a local one.

The person I quoted said "telus.com has the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8130 smartphone for free on a year years contract".
They have the word year in their twice and rereading it, I am assuming it should have been "three year" instead of "year years"

Any long term uses can comment on the stability? I tend to do a fair bit of texting and venture out of major cities (low signal areas).

My Touch keeps crashing on me and I am looking for a replacement phone. Would like one that I do not have to reset once every two days on average.

Most likely the reason why it crashes, because it has windows system...
