Any suggestions on where to stay in San Diego?

Hi there,

I'm trying to plan a family vacation to California in mid-August, will be stopping at San Diego for a few nights. We'll be visiting Sea World and San Diego Zoo mainly, still got to look up on what else to do. Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where about to stay. I'm looking at the downtown area/gaslamp quarter and mission bay where there's a beach, any place or area else?

On a budget? Tons of hotels/motels along I8 (just east of I5)

We rented a place from VRBO.com.... lots of room, it was great having a kitchen to make groceries, although most of them are for longer term stays.

I don't know how to use priceline, probably because I feel rather uneasy not know which particular hotel I'll end up getting! :P
