So I'm getting married in September in Toronto and in November, we are having a chinese banquet in Honk Kong (my fiancee is from HK). We are planning on leaving for our honeymoon from HK and going around for 12-13 days and then going back to HK before coming back home.

Our first thoughts are that we want to see Bangkok and Cambodia (Siem Reap). I'm looking for suggestions for one or two other locations. I would really prefer a tropical beach location such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Langkawai or Bali as Bangkok and Cambodia are more cultural endeavours that my fiancee would like.

Have any of you had any great experiences in any of those places that you care to share? I don't mind spending $300-400/night if I have to, but I'd prefer to spend less.

Palau Perhentian Islands in Malaysia were gorgeous when I went. If you're willing to spend a bit more, you can find some real nice spots. (We spent next to nothing and were happy with a bed in a hut).

I would never recommend Bali - I was only there as a backpacker but I could only imagine the hassles you get from street vendors and massage ladies would be unbearable. Unless you stayed in your resort the entire time, you couldn't walk 30 seconds without being harassed. I actually got punched in the arm because I didn't take a guy's business card. I know their tourism has been hurting recently because of bombs/tsunami/earthquake/etc but c'mon.

Don't try to do too much though. Make a base in one place and do one or two side trips. Traveling can be exhausting and frustrating if you try too much.

I would highly recommend Koh Phi Phi. It might be a hassle to get there since you'd have to fly to either Phuket or Krabi and then make some further connections but depending on which hotel you end up staying, they might take care all that for you.

Pattaya Resort and Spa (Pattaya), Amari in Phuket the famous patpong nearby but you're married you don't want to get divorced on your honeymoon now :)

Your own private beach so you don't get the hustlers from the streets, it's your honeymoon... in Bangkok stay at Bayoke Sky right in the center of Bangkok downtown, taxis are cheap

I would suggest Singapore for the eating / high end shopping / sight seeing etc. You could stay at Sentosa island (one of the kampong huts) and take the bus back into the mainland. But hey, I am biased since I am Singaporean and I enjoy the more technological pleasures of life (even tho Sentosa is an island with huts and surrounded by water ... has wifi and is super connected).

At any rate, HAVE FUN! I too want to get married in Asia when my time comes. We have to go where the good food and family are!

Food? Malaysia definately has more variety than Singapore, dont forget all kind of dishes in Singapore are originated from Malaysia. Highend shopping? KL has a lot now....1U, MegaMall, The Gardens, Pavillion, The Curve, Starhill, ...etc..you name it.. :cheesygri

Singapore has more HK flavour tho. I still love driving into KL for hawker food (cheaper) but never for shopping since I cant tell whether they are jesting me with the prices (at least in Singapore, my relatives can tell me if the price is good). My grandma wouldn't let me go by myself into KL tho the last time (but that is a different story). Honestly tho, I makan everytime I can in KL - the freaking bbq seafood beats any in Singapore hands down. I am hungry.

Very very true. If you have family there, then you should know where to go. Otherwise, let me know and I get direct you. BTW, if you are looking into Japan, do go with EGL tours with the tour guide 'Johnny'. This guy is soooooooooooo amazing and it was the best tour EVER. He took us all out into Tokyo nightlife even tho it wasn't in the itinerary. He took my luggage up and down the room everynight since I was a lady with no male companian. He did not leave the airport until each and everyone of us got into a taxi / airport train to get back home. (he stayed behind for an hr). He always took the time to explain everything to me cuz my cantonese sucked. I can go on and on ... but he was just superb.
