View Full Version : The justification for throwing garbage around...

I frequently have this argument with a friend saying that it is incorrect to throw garbage on the roads because it makes the city look dirty and you're causing the garbage collectors a heck of a lot of pain. He refutes it by saying that he's creating employment for garbage collectors. Its hard to argue that (even though it is down right WRONG) but applying economics he is correct in that the unemployment rate goes down?

This reminds me of movie theatres, there are always people who are paid to clean up trash after each show. Yeah, littering creates jobs but it doesn't change the fact that your friend is still lazy.

People who litter are just plain ignorant. How can you argue with an idiot?

well the less people that litter then the less we have to pay (taxes) for people to clean it up.

Excellent point!
OP, the next time your friend litters, pick it up and ask him for a quarter. Tell him that you're simply cutting out the middleman, ie., the government and their hired staff and saving him loads in taxes. :D

The next time he throws trash on the ground, punch him in the face. If he asks why, tell him you're creating jobs for the doctors and nurses.

Your friend is forgetting one very important point in his argument.
It's a city job so even if there isn't any garbage to collect they'll have their jobs, don't worry.
Beyond, it's illegal to litter therefore there is no justification for it.

The justification for throwing garbage around...
Could we keep this kind of "discussion" in high school please?

This past weekend, i got a flat tire on hwy 403 in mississauga because of "debris" or something on the road. I saw it, but if i were to avoid it I would've hit another car, and at those speeds, who knows right? I avoided as much as i could do safely and fortunately, just ended up with a flat and time lost changing the tire.
depending on what type of garbage your friend is throwing and where, it *could* pose a hazard.
some people may think that its something else and swirve to avoid. going 120KM on a hwy it can be hard to tell the difference.
your buddy is an idiot plain and simple, as others have pointed out already.

Why doesn't your friend start breaking into apartments and house and stealing things - that way he creates employment for police, security companies, alarm companies and hopefully prison guards

Tell your friend not to worry so much about creating employment and think about what kind of world he would prefer to live in. If he likes having trash around maybe he would enjoy living at the dump.

What about the added cost that will come from unemployed pickers? The money you save there, will just need to be added to Welfare, or EI.
Food for thought.

EDIT: I don't LITTER!
I find that too many holier-than-thou people are the ones who litter the most. They just make sure no one is watching, and then deny it if questioned. Every day I see people litter, on the road, in the car, on the sidewalk.
Don't forget people who throw their gum wherever they choose. People really need to learn.

although i think littering is wrong, i do not think taxes will go down. the extra revenue will just go towards those lazy people working at the government.
you think the government would really say, HEY the garbage people picked up less litter this year, lets REDUCE some taxes

There is a big difference between improving our economy with productive jobs versus improving our economy through makework. You are NOT creating real monetary value when you pick litter, you are simply undoing the damage caused by the person who littered...at a cost.
In short, the punch in the face is the way to go. For you too, untaka, and every asswipe that thinks (through whatever bizarre justification) that cigarette butts don't count as litter.

I am actually an anti literer - when I go for walks in the evening I try and pick up a couple of pieces of litter esp. pop cans and plastic bottles - I have come from a city which was disgusting cos of the litter and dog poop and don't want Mississauga to end up the same

I actually think the gum is worse. It's so difficult to pick that crap up, whereas butts are easily grabbed.
I also feel differently about Urban littering as opposed to Rural/Suburban littering. Littering is wrong, however it's not going to environmentally ruin anything in the city (unless your dumping down drains).

You guys are too emotional, I'm just saying I've littered in the past not saying its right to do. I mean common who hasn't spit out their gum from time. Now I've never thrown garbage around but I've spit out gum I won't lie about it.

I think the tax that smoker's pay should cover the cleanup. Unjust tax on a legal product. If they really think it's that bad (and it REALLY IS), then they should ban the product (which would kill 2 birds with one stone).

So what you're saying is that you are afraid to admit it.
Otherwise your post would have had your name, address and phone number so we could all ask you face-to-face about your littering.
I think someone who litters deserves some karma. OP, the next time you're at your friend's house, throw your garbage on his floor and tell him you're creating the need for him to hire a maid (1 more job created!).

Being illegal has nothing to do with whether or not you can justify it.

I think with a person like the OP's friend, his morality can be steered into the right direction by pointing out legalities. He obviously needs a push in the right direction.
