I stopped by Petro Canada earlier tonight and this Customer, started Verbally Abusing the Employee.

I was behind him and he starts yelling about the prices, how unbelievable they are and threaten that he thought about driving off without paying. The lady didn't respond, just started talking to her co-worker in their language.

BTW, he was short $0.06 and went on about how they already stole $40 of his money and just walked out.

Anyone here witnessed something like this?

Of course not. That's just pure tactics in his hands to get away with 6 cents!

That's just part of the job. They are the front line to a very volatile industry even if they have NOTHING to do with prices.

No different then if you were a gov worker and people will yell at your for their high taxes. Even if your gov job was cleaning toilets.

These people yelling at gas attendants are usually the ones driving 3-Series BMWs and C-Class Mercedes'. Somebody's gotta feel important.

Years ago, I used to work at a baked goods/sweets store. I worked for an employer and had no control whatsoever with the prices as I didn't set them. I had numerous customers complain to me about the prices of the bottled juices, water etc. and some were extremely rude and argumentative. In my opinion, life is too short for that. If you don't like the prices don't buy the product. Find an alternate way to get around or move to a more fuel efficient type of vehicle. If you don't want to do that, then don't direct your anger at someone that isn't the cause of the problem. The gas attendant isn't the one at fault and it is more a reflection on the type of person the customer is. Sure you can be angry, but by directing anger at the attendant, the customer just looks like a jerk.

That's when you tell them to shut the hell up and pay.

If they drive off, plate number to the cops.

Its obvious its not the guy at the stores fault for gas prices but in terms of your comment about the 6 cents. I am not sure the exact amount but I'm pretty sure you can be a little short on change and its generally acceptable.

ie if your in a rush and you pump $40 in gas because you have 2x $20 bills and the pump says $40.04, you can run into the gas station and drop $40 down on the counter (and skip the line).

I use an RFID key tag to pay for my gas so It's never a problem for me but I've seen others do this.

I am working at an insurance office right now for my summer job. It is suprising how many customers complain and get all mad when I tell them how much their car insurance will be. I don't set the prices and this is Saskatchewan prices. Imagine how pissed these same people would be if they were in a place like Ontario where car insurance easily cost double.

I've been on the business end of some heated end user rants...I man the phones when shiat hits the fans (IT helpdesk so to speak) and end users who aren't computer savvy call in and biatch about their applications that stopped working.

I generally have a thick skin, but there are some people who always get under it - at that point, I dawdle in getting their details, purposely misspell their names so that they have to keep repeating it, and generally do whatever I can to aggravate them even more. It's kind of cathartic actually :)

I have worked in the service industry before, yes. Imagine that employee would do that driver if he is a customer at his workplace. I think he would do the same thing.

it takes a real prick to take there frustrations out on someone who works the front line like that... and who obviously does not set the prices nor receives any extra compensation when prices are up

The scary thing is that this is going to become more and more common as people feel the financial squeeze that's happening now. As prices go up and money starts to get tight, some people begin to react more and more irrationally (as if the world is out to get them).

I'm glad I don't work retail anymore, they don't get paid enough to deal with the abuse.

Who is getting rich? The investors. It's their fault the Oil price had been driven up to record high. There is no real fuel shortage (as of right now). It's the oil producing entities creating scenarios that heighten up speculations, in turn jacking up the prices when people bid up the price.

It's human greed screwing the average people. Get into energy investment. That's the only way to offset other people screwing you over.

For $0.06?

Are you serious.

What happens if he steals a loaf a bread - cut his hands off?

Don't waste the cops time by calling them to tell them that someone talked to you in a threatening manor.

Unless the guy actually did something they aren't going to do anything.

1. The Police can go visit Mr. Happy if they like, or call him and tell him to go back and pay the money.

2. I've worked at a gas station and McDonalds, and if your till is under (or over) $2 you get in crap. If this was reproduced several times a day, you'll need a new job.

3. Just because people don't feel like paying and walk away (drive away in this case) doesn't make it right. He pumped the gas, he knew how much it cost before he pumped it. He needs to pay or others may start trying the same.

one analyst is calling for $6-$7/gallon in the states. imagine what will happen then.

This isn't about "o.o6", its about the idea that they "stole $40 of his money", not the 6 cents he was short.

And yea, I'm serious. Where do you draw the line? Oh.. he just stole $1 worth of gas, $10 etc.

Obviously no PC is going to write up a charge for six cents of gas if that's the case, but it can be made plain that this sort of thing is unacceptable and if you drive off without paying often, you will be prosecuted.

Most people would probably opt for small claims court, to try and get the money back, criminal court would be a waste of everyone's time and money.

Digo, I think you missed the boat...meaning the lawsuit a few years ago where two fat people actually tried to sue McDonald's for being fat, in the US. Luckily the lawsuit was thrown out by the judge...It made world headline.

Sounds like he was just embarrassed that he went 6 cents over his budget. I hate when people give a hard time to low level employees as if they are responsible for whatever policy it is they're mad about, or in this case, for something that was their own fault.
