Why is it always the shady, sorriest looking people that do these things. He's carrying a garbage bag as if there's a dismembered body in it.

Name that pixelated person!
Why does the TTC still have 1998'ish style web-cams as security cameras in 2008?

I highly doubt they do. I would imagine the TTC has high tech digital security cameras, it just so happens that the picture in the paper is pixelated.

Actually, a lot of companies have poor quality surveillance cameras just like this. Banks and big box retail stores are no exception. Don't ask me why, but that just seems to be the way it is for this technology.
Not everything is like it seems on TV.

You should see the cameras we have where I work. They are relatively cheap and you would actually be able to make out a face from the clips.

One simply has to look at other more populated city to see where TTC should head towards:
Hong Kong:
- TTC trains MUST stop at the same position each time, so lines can be drawn at each door for crowds to line up to board and exit from the train
- use electronic tickets
- charge by distance
- plexiglass doors and walls will be constructed at each station so people cannot be pushed into the tracks, or try to commit suicide by jumping themselves
Just remember these points y'all, they will come true, sooner or later. Every major city has these in place. Toronto is just light years behind, that's all.

Why stand at the edge waiting for a train anyhow? Stay back so you can see your surroundings.

Wow, random stabbings and then this idiot. Reminds me again why I go out of my way to avoid the TTC.
I agree the TTC should have some better security/safety measures in place. I'm sure they would hike the fee and everyone would be and a snarl though. -sg

1. I've only seen this in a few places in Europe.
2. I'll give you this one, electronic tickets are faily common but mainly due to fruad.
3. Not the case in a majority of systems in Europe.
4. I've never seen this with the exception of London.

Who cares if the cameras produce grainy images where you can't see anything. All they have to do is send the picture to CSI's teams and they'll enhance anything!

Really? I guess New York and Boston aren't major cities. I doubt there's any city in North America that has this.

I saw a few of these in China. I don't think it's such a big investment to install these doors and walls.

I don't think Europe's system is as advanced as Japan's and China's. And the Britain Underground, it was so so advanced when I took it last.
Toronto is looking more like Hong Kong/China every year. More and more asians are immigrating here. So, I am comparing it to Asia's subways, how they have to cope with Asian's mentality.

When I lived in Toronto about 20 years ago, I was always concerned that some nutjob would push me into the subway tracks. I always stood well back against the wall. That was 20 years ago and there are even more strange and crazy people out there today.

+1 My dad told me, when I was visiting HK (before they put up the plexiglas wall), NEVER stand near the edge. It gets crowded when people are waiting for the next train, then suddenly more and more join in, starts pushing people in the front. Ppl have fallen right in. Not on purpose to kill you, but the platform sometimes isn't big enough.
So HUG the wall he told me until the train comes.

I don't take subways a whole lot, but when I do, I always stand against the wall. Everyone around you is a potential threat and the farther back you stand, the more you can see. I have a "don't trust anyone" attitude, so I'm always on my toes when around strangers. I'd rather stand at the back and risk having the train leave me than stand near the front and risk getting pushed onto the tracks.

Firstly, it's London Underground, not the whole of Britain.
The only thing that's advanced about the Tube is the electronic ticketing (Oyster card). Everything else has a lot to be desired: 50 year old stock running in the Circle/District/Metropolitan lines; grimy stations, some worse than TTC property; unreliable (something different has to go wrong everyday. All lines in good service seems to be an exception rather than the norm.); fares incredibly expensive (Zone 1 cash fare is the equivalent of CAD$8!)

I worry when I am at one of those stations (i.e. Yonge and St George) where the platform for trains in both directions is in the middle. I've been on the platform when St George station is PACKED beyond belief. And when the train comes, everyone tries piling on and sometimes you just can't get on so you end up right on the edge and you can't move back with the crowd behind you. Those times that has happened, it really gives me the heebie jeebies.
Also I have to admit that I giggled at "Britain Underground".

I would agree with the electric ticket. This of course mean then they can charge by distance.
If you really want to see advanced, go to mainland china, Shanghai and Guanzhou. Shanghai is building *20* new lines, each with god knows how many stations. Each of these subway lines is more advanced/newer than the one in HK. In fact, HK system is over 15 years old but still looks new.
As for plexiglass at each station, when HK put those in, it costed them over $100 million USD to do, I believe the figure then was $800million HKD several years back. It is probably cheaper to put them in when the whole line is being built.
No way in hell TTC can afford this, when the number of jumpers and people being pushed is under 100 per year. Wouldnt be worth it.
