Bill C-51 is a proposed new law that favours big pharmaceutical companies and removes your right to Natural Health products.

Bill C-51 will:
- Outlaw nearly all Natural Health Products
- Criminalize the use of herbs
- Favour drug & medical treatments
- Ignore your Constitutional Rights

Isn’t it a coincidence that Health Minister Tony Clement who introduced Bill C-51, holds a 25% stake in Prudential Pharmaceuticals in Toronto?

Shouldn't it be your right to choose your health products and therapies?

Please visit www.stopc51.com to learn all the fact about Bill C-51.

Cheers to your health,

Bill C-51, which would lead to more regulatory scrutiny of natural health products sold in Canada, is drawing some criticism.

A rally was held Friday at the Federal Court in Calgary to protest passage of the proposed legislation, which would amend the federal Food and Drugs Act.

One hundred protesters showed up to voice their opinions about the legislation, which received second reading in April.

Websites and online groups have sprung up across the country imploring their members to lobby their MPs to halt the progress of the bill.

Critics feel the bill will outlaw up to 60 per cent of natural health products currently sold in Canada, making many natural health products that have been sold in Canada for decades unavailable for purchase and penalizing parents who give herbs or supplements to their children.

They also argue that the government could designate any natural health product a prescription drug, making it available by prescription only. They say these types of provisions will force small companies out of the market.

In a speech last month at the Emerging Issues in Customs conference in Mississauga, Ont., federal Health Minister Tony Clement defended the bill, saying that it would allow the federal government to be able to continuously monitor the safety of products even after they have been approved.

"We propose maintaining a rigorous assessment of health products prior to making them available," he said. "On top of that, Bill C-51 would provide the authority we now lack to make a recall as soon as we know there's a problem.

"We're seeking to gain the new authority to reassure the public that the government can, and will, act to protect health and safety as early as possible," he said.

Sorry for starting a second thread about Bill C-51.

RFD search engine didn't find anything on the topic when I tried it first.

I realize that there are quacks like Kevin Trudoe out there and I'd be the first to break his balls is I could.

My personal issue with Bill C-51 is this:

- Canadians will be undermined since laws will be passed behind closed doors

- On April 8th, 2008 bill was introduced into the House Of Commons. This bill has already passed second reading. It appears that our Government is trying to fast track this bill before anyone has a chance to challenge it. Bills normally take months to pass not weeks.

- The proponent, Health Minister Tony Clement has a self interest in Big Pharma Companies (He's the owner of 25% stake in Prudential Pharmaceuticals).

- Natural health products (NHPs) are defined as: vitamins and minerals, herbal remedies, homeopathic medicines, traditional medicines such as Traditional Chinese Medicines, probiotics, and other products like amino acids and essential fatty acids. Bill C-51 will make them available by perscription only. Don't we have a serious shortage of doctors in Canada already?

- Pharmaceutical Drugs not Natural Health Products are the leading cause of death in North America.

Not anymore, according to an Ottawa Citizen article dated February 8, 2007 (which means he hasn't owned that stake in almost 2 years):

Mr. Clement was forced to divest his shares in Toronto drug distributor Prudential Chem Inc. last July after consumer lobbyists accused him of being in a conflict of interest.

If the C-51 haters can get this little fact wrong, makes you wonder what else is not accurate.

I keep seeing NHP's being referred to as snake oil or as being ineffective as a whole. This is an ignorant characterization considering many of the drugs pushed by Big Pharma were originally synthesized from natural sources.
It is easy to find a plethora of documentation from medical journals, respected professionals, industry insiders, etc., extolling the benefits of vitamins and minerals in preventing and fighting disease. One can find an equal amount of literature discussing the physical and financial burdens created by pharmaceutical drugs.

For anyone to make a truly informed decision, they need to do some independent research. If you read all sides of the issues, you may be surprised …

Bill C51 is being cleverly disguised as the saving grace for regulating NHP’s, when it is in fact a step towards harmonization to Codex standards and a North American Union. The Council on Foreign Relations openly writes about their ideas and actions towards the inception of the NAU in their article Building a North American Community

http://www.cfr.org/content/publications/attachments/NorthAmerica_TF_final.pdf

One needs only look to the European Union to get a glimpse of the type of Government control we can expect if Canadians don’t wake up and fight for our sovereignty. The EU has been called a police state (see http://www.eutruth.org.uk/), and continues to push for stricter government control over all aspects of its citizens lives. In 2002 the EU activated its Directive on Food Supplements (FSD), which was sold to the people under the same marketing scheme as Bill C51 is being sold to us.

HARMONIZATION – the scariest word in politics today.

INFORM YOURSELF!

Security and Prosperity Partnership
Codex Alimentarius
The Trans Texas Corridor
North American Union
Tri-lateral Commission
Council on Foreign Relations
The Bilderberg Society

The motives behind these issues are obvious – Power and Control.

Bill C51 is not about safety and reassurance for the public, it is about controlling the market and seeing if we as a people will so easily give up our rights and freedoms.
Anyone who says they have full trust that our government always acts in the best interest of its citizens isn’t paying attention or is practicing willful blindness. As with anything you need to be scrupulous in what you believe but some simple fact checking can clear the clutter and reveal the facts.

NHP’s should be regulated but Bill C51 is not the only way, nor is it even close to the best way. Vitamins and Supplements should be regulated as ‘food’ and not ‘drugs’, and given a distinctive set of regulations that reflects the inherent differences between NHP Even if you don’t believe in NHP’s (study how the body works and you may change your mind), do you believe in Canadian sovereignty and freedom of choice?

why is this thread in sports & fitness?

Probably because many people interested in sports and fitness take supplements. Energy boosters, creatine, multi vitamins, ginseng, etc.

I don't even understand this bill after reading it a few times. I'm not sure if I should be worried or not.

On the one hand, there are people out there like the scumbags who sell gogi juice to cancer patients for rediculous prices telling them that it basically cures cancer. On the other hand, I don't eat as well as I should and take a daily multi vitamin (and siberian ginseng during flu season for a little extra energy). I'll drink a red bull on night shift instead of coffee.

I guess they're not going to say exactly what will be regulated and what won't. I'm hesitant to put a decision like that in the hands of politicians since they generally screw stuff like that up.

So Uncle Steve, is it the actual existence of the Bilderberg group you question? or just it's relevance?

If it is the existence of such a group then take a look at Wikipedias page concerning Bilderberg at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilderberg_Group
If you scroll down to the references section you will find links to articles from international newspapers questioning the motives involved in such secretive meetings.

Here is a Canadian perspective on the group.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/bilderberg-group/

I myself am uncomfortable with the idea of a group comprised of international politicians and big business elite discussing world policy and economics behind closed doors with no oversight or input from either media or the general population. If what they discuss and implement was truly in our best interests, then why be so secretive? Are we as the public so inept and ignorant that we need to be shielded from the knowledge of what goes on in these meetings? Do a little reading on the group and its members and then tell me if you think it is so innocuous as to be undeserved of attention.

I agree that regulation is needed to ensure safety and efficacy of Natural Health Products. As with any arena where profit is possible, there will always be those wishing to exploit clever marketing and trusting consumers. Bill C51 is not the only approach, and in fact it is far from pro-actively addressing all aspects of this issue.
In the US, under DSHEA, NHP's are regulated under food while this bill groups all NHP's with drugs. This is a vital difference which can be recognized simply by comparing the effects of DSHEA in the US and the EU's Food and Supplements Directive (FSD). I strongly urge all Canadians to do some reading on the EU's approach to policy and its impact on the citizens of the countries involved.

The EU was built on trade and policy agreements much like NAFTA, TILMA, and the SPP. We are not somehow magically protected from facing similar issues to those in Europe simply because we are Canadian. Over 200 million people living under EU rule want out and describe it as a burgeoning police state.

I am a proud Canadian and believe that we need to protect our position as a sovereign country. As citizens of this nation it is our responsibility to be informed and actively speaking our minds, or we may just wake up living in a North American Union.

If being aware and informed earns me a tin foil hat, I will wear it with pride.

I love our country Canada; the high standard of living, the peace and the freedom within. I dutifully, and sometimes reluctantly pay my taxes so those government elected officials continue protecting my freedom, not to obstruct it. I hope that you, my fellow Canadians will also join me in the fight against Bill C-51 and the possible threat it may pose on our health and freedom, as once passed laws are very difficult to repel. Do we really want to take the chance with Bill C-51?

'If we don't stand for something; we'll fall for anything.'

In a democracy, politicians are only as good as the standard that the electorate holds them accountable to.

Should the government be trusted with all important decisions?

Remember: Canada's Gun Registry

When introduced it's estimated cost was meant to be approx $120 Million. The latest estimate pegs the cost at $2 BILLION. That's only a 1667% cost over-run.

Efficient? Debatable.

Effective? I'm not fit to decide, however 'The Auditor General's report found that there is a lack of evidence to support the effectiveness of the gun registry, or to prove that it is meeting its stated goal of improving public safety.'

When I read this Bill, I felt sick!!! Then I got mad.

This Bill gives our government absolute power; To determine what is and is not 'therapeutic' and then either ban it and make it illegal, or take over control and make the manufactures prove it is safe and pay them $$$ in registration fees. Yes, it would get rid of the snake charmers, but it also get rid of ALOT of natural herbs and put MANY health food stores and smaller manufacturing companies OUT OF BUSINESS! That means higher prices for the 'comsumer' because of lack of competition, and may mean that your GP would have to fill out 'prescriptions' for those 'vitamins' that are now deemed 'theraputic products.'

This Bill also gives the government free reign on searching and confiscating your property without a warrant, and confiscating your property for however long they want, and make you PAY for the storage and other fines. You want to grow oregano in your garden? If the government deems it a 'theraputic product' then you will not be able to and may be charged under this Bill!

This Bill also allows the government to pass OTHER COUNTRIES laws as our own, without having the representatives of the people who were voted in by the people, have a voice in the matter. That does not sound very democratic.

I know that this thing has a HUGE push from Big Pharma, as they want control of this market, and I'm sure our government wants to increase their revenues in this endevour. You'd have to be BLIND not to see that fact.

I can not believe this ********. Seriously, I do not need the government telling me what food and 'therapeutic products' I can and can not consume! If that were not bad enough, giving them free reign and infringing on my Charter of Rights and Freedoms!!!

I'm going to the next rally, and writing my Local MP, and PM Harper a detailed letter to voice my concerns, as well as signing a petition.
