Are the legends of fast food workers making $15+/hr in alberta true?

I looked over the HRDC job bank and found most administrative type office positions advertising around $12-$14/hr...
General labor in the $10-$12/range...

I haven't seen fast food workers making $15+/hour here, but $10+/hour is common

Rent and housing is absolutely insane though.

Hell, part-time at Seven Eleven pays $11/hr with full benefits. Just make sure you do the math against having to pay $700-$1200 for an apartment. The extra dough may not be worth it.

In Alberta as a whole it is true. However, it could be in Fort Mac, but here in calgary I haven't seen fastfood jobs pay $15/hr.

On my way in from the airport, Burger King's sign said

Hiring F/T employees

$12 per hour and up

However that could be the graveyard shift.

The help-wanted ads for these jobs in Saskatoon have been stratling lately as well as these outfits struggle to get people.

I've seen signs for $13/hr @ Tim Hortons and $14/hr at KFC. We've got a couple of pretty large call centers that pay people $15+/hr + bonuses to start (and are always hiring) so fast food has to compete with that it seems.

The funny stories we used to hear about our friends in AB are happening here now as well. A long-standing BK on a main strip closed stating costs were too high (rent increases & labour increases).. I went to a Wendy's on a Sunday at noon and it was CLOSED with a sign on the door stating that a shortage of employees has forced them to close on Sundays. I know a manager at a DQ who has told me he has staffing problems as well.

If you have a good work ethic, some motivation, and a bit of wits, you could probably be manager at these places fairly rapidly and be making over $15/hr quickly.

It is true. Like others said though that's in Fort Mac where a 20y/o TRAILER costs $300k+ or average rent is well over $3000/month. Everywhere else it's the minimum wage to maybe $10/hr.

$12 an hour for fast food is pretty typical. You can still find places to rent in the $500 to $600 range, but the areas you get aren't very pretty.

The major advantage is the industry driven employment. If you network a little, send out a ton of resumes, and have good references, you can probably net a $15-$20 an hour job easily. You'll have to work a lot more than a fast food job would require, but the rewards are worth the effort.
