The only thing is that Volvo cars are a POS. If you are going to spend decent money in that range spend it on a Japanese car. Lexus for example has reduced the mrsp on all their cars to reflect US pricing and have cash incentives as well. This way you don't get stuck with a Ford tranny in a "Swedish" car.

If you are going to spend decent money in that range spend it on a Japanese car.

I have a Subaru and a Volvo. Subaru is fun to drive. Volvo is supremely comfortable. I like both of them.

Not exactly station wagons, but there's also the Mazda 5 and the Kia Rondo.

Why are Volvo cars a POS? My relatives have had 850, 850 Turbo, S70, S80, they all run perfectly fine AND very solid cars. I don't see an reason to steer people away from Volvo.

Japanese cars are good, but not ALWAYS the best....fyi. Alot of that "better car" goes towards personal preferences too. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a volvo when I get married if the price is right (I am not in the age group for it ;)).

but you are forgetting about the US incentives!! even with all the incentives - including loyalty, the price is still no match for us price and incentives. and in the US cars typically get sold under invoice.

where would such PDI be negotiable?would carcost.ca or apa.ca still help if such incentives are offered?

I went to volvovilla unioville,all regular v70 are Not available.Only upgraded one with higher prices(Bait and switch)
The salesperson did not know about the loyalty program,has to check blah blah blah.

I was the original owner of a Volvo 1999 S80 which had numerous problems. This included a faulty ETM (electronic throttle module). Volvo knew about this problem and faced litigation in the states over it. This caused the acceleration to stall when the gas was pressed causing a 1 to 2 second delay in the movement of the car.

The headlights and tail lights were blowing out every month until they put in a fix.

I had two electrical failures rendering the car totally inoperable so I had it towed to the dealership. The first time they blamed my cell phone charger for blowing out the electrical system (not).

At 170km, I took the car in for ROUTINE maintenance which included a timing belt change (165K for volvo according to the manuals). When the service was finished suddenly the engine warning light went off and they told me my transmission was blown. They wanted 3400 for a new tranny plus 1200 for labor. I did not have a tranny problem prior to taking the car into the dealership. I said forget it and drove the car away in limp mode (stuck in 3rd gear).

My front panel looked like a freaking Christmas tree with all the warning lights on. In fact every time a light went on it was like getting dinged for 1k at the dealership.

There were other smaller problems as well which for the most part was taken care of during the 5 yr warranty period ( I had the extended warranty) but what a pain. For a 50K Plus car before taxes it was a POS.

I have a friend who owns a volvo 2006 XC90 who has had all sorts of problems as well. He drives an SUV with Christmas tree lights as well. I laugh about it every time I see him.

I owned a 93 prelude previously which I had 360 000km on which I never experienced any problems outside of the routine wear stuff. I ended up selling it because I needed a larger car.

I currently own a lexus IS 250 awd and my wife an RX 350 which is day and night to the Volvo nightmare I suffered through.

That's been my understanding from recent owners as well. We had a pre-Ford 760 Turbo wagon, and it was a tank. Parts were ridiculously expensive, but it is still on the road 19 years later - our neighbour bought it. He does his own maintenance, but parts are still expensive.

I absolutely agree with you on this statement.

If you want a good, solid, reliable Volvo, get something from the 240/740/940 era. They are certainly not "POS".

Yeah, the best people to ask are actual mechanics who've worked with them. I've only driven the S60. The handling, performance and steering was crap on it but man they have the best seats in the industry bar none. Also, they are super safe cars. If I wasn't in a Volvo with the whiplash seats, I would probably be severely injured right now as I was in a major rear end accident last year. Did I go out and buy another Volvo..noo.

Not to say they suck but the S60 is pretty outdated for what you pay for compared to everyone else.

Reliability is a given for any European car especially with electronics but the engines are top notch if you take care of them.

It's really what you want in the end.

Safety and best seat are for sure. We have a 5 yrs old S60 and it's very reliable so far. No major problems, other than a few minor things. Compared to other European cars, I think Volvo is good. Of course, if you're looking for performance and sharp look, look elsewhere.
