Hi:

I am wondering if anyone did research on rust protection on new car? I just got a Toyota and the sales offer me $499 for Rust Protection & Sound Shield by Diamond Kote http://www.diamondkote.com/

I went to Canaidan Tire Site and they have this CounterAct Electronic Rust Protection System currently onsale for 199.

Please advise

All junk. No evidence to support that they work, either scientific or statistical. Stories like "I got mine done and I don't have rust after 20 years" are meaningless since there is no control group, and 1 single car does not prove anything.

Of the aftermarket treatments only the oil based ones (Metropolitan Anti-Rust, Krown in Ontario?) have some credibility, although once again, the science and chemistry behind them is nowhere to be found.

The electric devices that charge your car are bunk. No battery will put out enough energy to fully ionize the entire sheet metal of your car. We won't even mention the problems associated with driving around in a giant charged dipole all day long.

If the dealer is offering you lifetime protection, I'd go with that. Cuz at least if it does rust, then they're gonna have to fix the rust for you (assuming you plan on keeping the car a long time).

The dealer warranty may be prorated over the lifetime of the car and you will have to pay eventually if rust develops.

What dealer warranty? Virtually all new cars have surface rust warranty throughout the comprehensive period, and an extended rust through warranty to 6 or 8 years.
