Hey folks.

I am in the market for a older (1999-2001) car, possibly a Civic or a Sentra. Possibly a Camry.

What are peoples thoughts? Right now I am focused on a Sentra SE, because it has a little more power than the Civic.
I know civic's are great cars, but I wouldn't mind something just a touch sportier.

The Sentra SE (b15 body, SR20de engine, last production year 2001) is an excellent car with a bulletproof engine.

The Sentra SE-R/Spec V (b15 body, qr25de engine, 2002-2006) has issues with the engine. I owned one for 7 years and although it was highly reliable, the qr25de in Altimas and Se-r's have had oil consumption issues due to failing pre-cats. If you buy one used, you need to know how to spot the oil burners. Read this first:

Both Sentras SE/SE-R are similar in other aspects than the engine. The SE-R is essentially the SE with perf. package and the newer engine, while the spec V adds the 6 speed manual from the Maxima, bigger stabilizers, stiffer springs and bigger wheels. The engine is tuned for slightly more power, but both cars are grossly overrated under the old hp system.

I know nothing of Civics, and god willing, I will go to my grave never having driven a Honda/Acura.

The civic would be reliable but I personally find them overpriced, I see 1998-1999 priced between $5000-$6000. Honestly thats overpriced, a 2001 would be fair at $5000.

Sentra or Altima? Your subject line says Altima...

I find this quite funny, why? Did Honda kill your family?

Dude, it's another car, a moving piece of metal.. I find people who harbor this sort of elitist attitude quite funny..

some say Coke, some say Pepsi,

I used to own a Civic, but I was interested in something different.

I like the look of the Nissan's, but I don't know how long they last. Even haters of Honda have to admit they last a DAMN long time.

Anyone familiar with running a Sentra (SE) for 6, 8 or more years?

{P.S. Sorry about the title..... should read Sentra}

Thanks, so it's the SE-R and not so much the SE with the oil-burning problem?

Yes. The sr20de is probably Nissan's 2nd best engine ever made, and arguably one of the best 4 cyl engines produced in the 90s. The thread I linked you to is a b15 sentra forum, with huge loyal SE/SE-R following. Address your questions there.

Are there any Nissan dealers or service shops in your part of the world (i.e. north of the arctic circle? Doesn't everybody drive a GM or Ford pickup there? :cheesygri

hey,

I am buying this car because I plan to move to the 'south' soon. My community is extremely remote (Qikiqtarjuaq, NU), and we have about a total of a dozen cars/trucks here, with about 8km's of roads to drive. Needless to say, I get alot more use out of my ATV than I would a car.
Truth is, there is a mismatch of vehicles here, makes and years, everything from Hyundai Ponies to full size diesel pick-ups.

I have been looking at the accords, what kind of gas mileage are you getting?

Used Camrys and Accords have very good values. Mileage is not really an issue for these cars. My family drove these 2 brand and they are last over 300K. The body die before the engine.
