A year ago I purchased an 02 Protege5. It's in great condition, except there is this bubbling from a previous rust repair (from the original owner), shown below:

The rust seems like it might be somewhat serious, and I'll be selling the car due to unforeseen circumstances. Is there a simple DIY way to fix this without getting too carried away? I was thinking I could sand it and there must be some type of compound or bondo I could put over it and sand it back into somewhat original shape, and paint with the manufacturer's touch up paint...help? Obviously, the correct way to fix this is to just buy a new hood, but I'd like a quick fix to get me through the sale.

$200-$300 and a body shop could take car of it.. I think..

Or perhaps a hood deflector?

cheapest way would be,
DIY sand/prime/paint
buy a magnetic bra (http://www.magnetbra.com/01Protege.html) and hope who ever buys the car don't lift up the bra to inspect...

i feel sorry for the guy who buys ur car tho....hope it's not another RFDer

lol.

This is the exact reason didn't get a mazda p5. They are dealing with thinner paint and rust issues. Do a search on rfd or google and you'll find more.

P5 isn't the only car suffers the thinner paint,
IMO Mazda j/ cheaped out on the quality/workmanship on paintin' all their cars... my MS6 gets lots of stone chips too!

Yes, I heard that as well. I know honda and toyota owners with cars in 2002+ model years have been complaining about alot of paint chips as well.

I'm fairly certain this is due to environmental regulations that require water-based (or non-lead-based) paint be used. That new paint is nowhere near as durable as the older stuff, but is supposedly safer for us all.

I'll take my stone chips, I guess. :(

This is what wrote mazda off for me when I was looking too. I have seen way too many badly rusted P5's
