Hey Guys,
I was looking at the Mazda 6 used on autotrader and the price/per km ratio was really good in my opinion. What's everyone's opinion on the car? is there alot of mechanical problems? is that why the price are a bit more affordable?

I have one. hatchback that is :) The car is very good to me. Almost every car is going to have a problem here and there. No car is perfert. They wear and tear over time. They do depreciate in value after you buy them so maybe thats why $ is low. I would buy it. Get it checked out before you do of course. is it 4 cly or v6 ?

when i was looking for my car, i noticed Mazda6 was reallly cheap compared to Mazda3. It got bad ratings from Consumer Reports. But still, its a nice car.

is there a reason why they depreciate in value so fast and are poorly rated in the consumer report?

I was going to get one originally. It is not good on gas since I think it is a 240hp v6.

But shouldn't the V4 engine be a bit more fuel efficient? I'm looking for the V4 version, not the V6. I think all V6's in general are classified as high gas consumption.

I4 Mazda 6 will consume a little more gas than Camry/Accord since it has greater torque.. then again, it's a heavy car...
V6 will consume even more gas, but premium gas is not required..
Mazda 6 are made in US (michigan?) and the 3's are made in japan,
of coz it will depreciate more.... afterall, it's still a FORD.....(slighly)
as for reliablity, it's really a hit or a miss.....if you get lucky,
u might have no problem at all.... but again, reliability is not
the key for mazda......not like honda/toyota...
j/ my $0.02.......correct me if i'm wrong...

So thats why everyone aims for the 3's and not the 6's. I was unware that the 3's were from Japan, and the 6's were from the States. Crappier build pretty much rite?

I wouldn't put too much stock in the perceived difference between a 6 and a 3. Mazda's are decent cars, but they suffer from the same problem as Nissan and Mitsubishi: they depreciate faster than Honda/Toyota. Your question should be reversed: why do Honda/Toyota maintain unreasonably high resale values compared to their age?
The reason 3s hold their value better is because they are more sought after in Canada where the small car segment is more dominant than the mid-size. The Mazda 3 in partciular is a hugely popular model.
I would check a few sources other than CR before making definitive conclusions about realibility, notably JD Power, Phil Edmonston's Lemon Aid car guide, MSN autos

Do mazda dealerships have any previously used 2nd hand cars that they sell out as well?

What year would that be? I thought it was 220hp V6... The Accord had 240hp, and the Altima had 245hp, but I'm pretty sure the Mazda6 had 220hp, at least for the 2004 model that I was interested in originally as well.

You can get used cars of all brands at all kinds of dealerships. It is quite likely that Mazda dealerships would also have used Mazdas.
As for the 6, I have one and it exhibits the rough upshift problems even after the dealer updated the powertrain software. Many people complain about this sort of thing on mazda forums but others have no problems at all.
If you're getting a used one, be sure to read up on this issue particularly at Mazda6Club and know what to look for when test driving.
