Is the boom within Calgary specifically for the mining and energy sector, or are industries such as finance also on high boom. I heard from someone that in CIBC they hire CSR over there just like that? People from Calgary are encouraged to reply please!!

Not just Calgary, but a good part of a western canada, including the BC interior, and parts of saskatchewan too.

It's oil and gas that is the source of the boom but all those new money yuppies need homes, luxury goods, vehicles and yes financial services.

There isn't much in Calgary that isn't profiting from the oil and gas sector indirectly.

why CSR? All the commodity trading shops are looking for operations folk and backoffice folk all the time. Also all companies are looking for good A/R or A/P folk.

The boom is dying down though in calgary, costs are catching up. Look at Saskatchewan more.

You could probably find a decent job here (Calgary) by checking the websites of companies that interest you, the recruiting companies, and general career ad sites. Whatever you do, do not come here unless you have a place to live or enough money to pay for fairly high priced rents because there aren't a lot of places to rent so the prices are high.

The Alberta "boom" is pretty much done, Saskatchewan is definately the up and coming boom province. Lots of new mining projects/expansions in the works and the oil industry is going to pick up gradually.

The boom is from oil & gas but everything is affected. There are good paying jobs in every field, but you have to be fairly qualified. IE, companies aren't handing out 6 figure salaries to people with little/no experience. It's the lower wage jobs that have seen the biggest increases. Minimum wage is $8 here and I don't know a single person making less than $10. Receptionists are making $45k+. Trades are still in demand, but is starting to tail off a little, that said most tradespeople I know are booked into next year.

If you're thinking of moving here, find a place to live first. $700+/month rent isn't out of the ordinary. You can probably find something around the $500 range if you want to live with a few people. Or you could try buying a place.

Its really all over the map in Calgary. I know tow truck drivers who make $65k/year. I also know degreed engineers who barely even make $45k/year and for which the demand for their services is pretty weak.

I agree completely that its been the service jobs that have seen the greatest demand. Not so much demand on the high end for professionals however.

And $700/month, that'll get you what, a basement suite in Forest Lawn, or some other ghetto. Its pretty expensive to rent or live there.
