Tonight there were another 2 break ins at the Good Life I visit. I had personally lost my HTC Tytn in my locked locker, but I attributed that to a very poor quality combo lock I used and letting people see when I put the phone in my locker.
However, the manager tells everyone in the locker today to avoid using any combo lock because there are numerous case of people breaking in higher quality combo locks and the police had informed them that there are a group of people that specializes in breaking in these locks going around.
The polices' recommendation is to use key locks, which are harder to break, but my recommendation is to never bring anything valuable into the gym in the first place. This kinda sucks because my gym used to be very easy going and Ive seen people leaving wallets into unlocked lockers. I had personally returned valuables (i.e. mp3 players) that someone left behind.

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. When I was a clown in HS we used to always break into lockers as well... it actually didn't take too long because people usually left the last number set.
I'm definately not bringing valuables in the lockers anymore. Definately post what Goodlife this was... I have a feeling either the yonge/bloor or a location in skarlem ;)

Yeaah I remember back in High School I would take the extra second and turn it back to 0, and then gently pull the lock so you can't move the dial.
After you got the last number, its easy to get the first number and then afterwards you can just get the second number.

i thought it was common sense that people moved the dial back to 0 after locking. but even if key locks, if you have a flimsy one, it might be easy to break as well.

In another thread they said that dudley combo locks are really good:?:

I would not trust any kind of lock. I have seen thieves use wire cutters to cut straight through pad locks - and this was at a fitness centre. Simply do not leave anything of value in a locker.

Any lock can be broken into, some easier than others. Most thieves will look for the easy and quick targets. Just avoid using those cheap combination locks and at the very least, use a Dudley.

Don't bring a lot of cash or credit cards with you to these places. People are looking for cash when they break into these locks.
Plus credit cards are easy to use by someone else since there's no PIN involved like a bank card.

I remember in middle school, when he saw a lock that was not a dudley, he would just take a belt, wrap it around the lock and just pull it hard. Sure enough, the lock would just open. It didn't work on the Dudleys and we were always told in school to use a dudley as they are the best combination locks.
My question though is doesn't anybody ever see somebody breaking into someone else's locker?

When the lock is the combination lock, it is hard to tell if the one who is opening the lock is a crook or the real owner. It is easier to spot people trying to break a key lock.

Just youtube combination lock and you get many videos on how to shimmy a lock with the aluminum from a pop can.

Sorry, I forgot this post! :P
It was the Victoria Terrace (Victoria Park and Ellesmere) location, but I think it's industry wide. I'm guessing there are 2 or more people involved in this sort of scheme. One for the look out and the other to actually do the stealing.

well I know Sheppard ctr has cameras in the hallways before entering the changerooms so if you lose anything, report the time to the manager who can pinpoint who was entering/exiting the changerooms.
and if you're paranoid.. try this.. go to the showers switch it on.. wait 30 seconds and go back to your locker to see if anyone is working on your lock... they wait till you're in the shower.. my friends have found guys at their lockers claiming they forgot which locker was theirs

There are a few things they can do to help catch, if not at least deter thieves from working on the gym locker. Have a competent (very important) worker checking the locker room in unpredictable but somewhere near 20 minutes to check for people who shouldnt be there.

Dudley's are the best locks to use, period. Avoid Master locks as they are complete crap. In high school people used to keep pulling on them until they opened.
