Does the car have to be insured before I go in to register for plates? I know that before I put the plates on the car it has to be insured, but does the car have to be insured before I can buy plates?

Thanks

Yes you need insurance before. The office requires you to show proof of insurance before they give you plates.

hum.....how about I have a QC license and want to change my license and and insurance to Ontario.

I talked with an insurance agent at Belair, they says they wont insure me (permanently) in Ontario unless I have a Ontario License and Ontario Plate.

So by the time I change to my QC plate to ON plate, I wont have any insurance (my QC insurance wont cover me once my plate changed), unless I call the insurance in spot without driving the car anywhere and get the policy in force right away after I get my ONT license

I just bought hubby some personalized plates in my name, all they did was register them to me. They arrived with a short form indicating I would be transferring them to him for his car. No other info was asked for....now they also do not have a sticker with them, until he transfers his existing plate to the new plates.

The person you spoke to is clueless. You won't be issued plates without Ontario insurance.

Change your QC licence for an Ontario licence then shop around for insurance.

Don't loose that form! If you do it's $10 to replace. Sign the form gifting the plates to your husband. Bring in the old plates, the form (that you signed) that came with the new plates, both halves of the ownership and valid insurance for the vehicle. The Issuing Office will give you a new ownership with the new plates attached and a new sticker. If the vehicle is leased, your husband will need a letter from the leasing company allowing him to attached the personalized plates to the vehicle.

i still got to change the owner of the car to myself. so do i have to go in change the owner, then phone insurance then get plates?

the car is from Vancouver, it doesnt have the same ownership papers as us. The guy just gave me his insurance papers with all the info and the VIN # of the car, will i be able to switch ownership?

The process should be:
1. If arriving from out of province get vehicle inspected and emissions test
2. Get a your license switched to Ontario (they will give you a paper temporary)
3. Go to insurance company with paper license and vehicle inspection you get insurance and temporary card. (Also bring insurance history if switching companies). You may need proof of ownership if the vehicle isn't in your name for some reason, not 100% sure.
4. Bring old registration, paper license, temp insurance, emissions results and I think the safety as well to get plates. You also need proof of ownership at this point either a letter from the seller or on a lease vehicle power of attorney.

Theres 3 different users with 3 different questions in this thread I hope this helps someone.

To the guy from QC who talked to Belair. The should insure you once the car is inspected and you have a license. It's stupid to demand that you have ON plates because you can't get the plates before the insurance.

I am confused. Recently I bought a used car at a dealership. The dealer got the registration done up in my name and just handed me the papers when I handed over the money. The new plates were already on the car.

I never showed anyone the proof of insurance (even though I did get insurance) so how did the dealer get the car registered in my name?

Did your insurer ask who you were buying the car from?

Most insurers will fax the appropriate piece of paper confirming your coverage to the dealer precisely so the dealer can show it to the licencing office when registering your car...

Doesn't he have to transfer ownership first with BC where the car is plated, then get a temp permit from BC ? I don't think you can transfer ownership of a BC plated car in ON?

Dealers fill out different forms for the MTO, on the form the insurance information is filled in by the dealer.

A responsible dealer will contact the insurance agent/company of the customer and provide the new serial number of the car being purchased, it should be part of why dealers charge an admin fee.

they said the car is rebuilt so i need a structural test w/e that crap is. it said vehicle status:rebuilt so i didnt get ownership:mad:

That's odd. I thought the structural certificate was only needed if the vehicle were going from salvaged to rebuilt, not for transfer of a rebuilt vehicle.

I don't remember if that happened ... that might be it.

Oh, bad luck...you'll need another emissions test next year unless your birthday is within one year of date of your current emissions test. However, if I am not mistaken, you can renew your plates early (3 months early?) which may allow you to use the same emissions test certificate. Just make sure you don't throw away the one you just obtained.

yea my birthday is in 1 year of the car, i was born in 1989. But I hate that the car status is rebuilt. The person said as soon as she put it into the computer then it asked her to make sure there is a structural test. so that means a rebuilt car being transferred still needs one which is stupid imo

Will my existing QC insurance cover me when I changed my license to ONT?

What is the proper procedure?

Get ONT License, then change car reg , then get change to ONT insurance.

Guess I have to do emission test before getting the car reg too, right?
