As far as the nation-wide chains I like Little Caesars....
However, here in Ottawa 'Moe's World Famous Newport Restaurant' makes a great pizza too....
Never cared much for the Supermarket frozen ones...

Not including the independent and mom/pop pizza places, I think Pizza Hut is the best (and Pizza Hut has the best tasting crust too).
My ranking is:
Pizza Hut
Boston Pizza (although this is terribly overpriced)
Pizza Nova
Dominoes
.
.
.
Worst national chain pizza place is: Pizza Pizza
As for store bought pizza's, Im really liking those thin crust International Pizzas by McCain.

Chain has to be Pizza Hut
Surprisingly, there is a place in Lindsay that makes excellent pizza, its called 5 Star Pizza. Better than a lot of the places Ive eaten at when I lived in Toronto.
Worst chain is Pizza Pizza or should I say Cardboard Cardboard

Like Little Caesar's, but they are far and few between now. Tasty sauce especially if you ask for the breadsticks and the get the pizza sauce to dip it in.
Never cared about Newport pizza, still don't know what the fuss is about
I like Colonnade personally, and House of Pizza.
Didn't find Gabriel's anything special. Sauce is kind of bland.

Collonade is definately a good place, I prefer to go there if I'm going to be dining-in. Just the fact that their downtown location has a street window where you can see them make the pizzas.... after reading some of those health reports, I take comfort in seeing the state of their kitchen.

man, mother's pizza parlour brings back great memories. it was almost a landmark in my neighbourhood. had many a great lunches and dinners with part-time job colleagues and friends there. friends worked there. had valentine's dinners with a bunch of girlfriends who didn't have boyfriends at the time and we'd get carnations or balloons from the restaurant. had dates there. oh, dreaming back now..... :D

Pizza Hut pan pizza is the best tasting as long as you don't mind the grease. For non-pan, Little Caesars is pretty too and Dominos isn't bad either. But the best pizza I've had is from this place in Hamilton called Basilique. The kind of gourmet pizza that the chains are trying to copy. Pretty cheap too. Their BBQ Chicken + jalepenos + shrimp = best pizza ever. Too bad I don't live near there anymore. Must try for anyone in Hamilton. http://www.basilique.ca/

Not sure which is the best... but here's my thoughts on several places:
Dominos = not bad, too salty, decent portion of pepperoni, but usually light on cheese
Pizza Hut = this is some good s***e, unfortunately, the cheese is made of oil (so I've heard), and the bottom of the crust is usually soaked in grease. Would be amazing if cheese was real, and pizza was less greasy.
Pizza Pizza = can sometimes be dry, but is usually pretty good. Slightly above average.
Panago = Oh, delicious!
2for1 = a little on the salty side, similar to pizza pizza. Average
Little Caesars = Very good stuff, especially with the garlic crust. Light on the pepperoni at times though :(
Boston Pizza = I really like BP Pizza, but it's far too expensive. Would probably be my favourite, if it were cheaper.
Pres. Choice Pepperoni Frozen Pizza = hands down the best frozen pizza I have ever tasted. I don't care for the pepperoni under the cheese though, so I usually have to deconstruct the pizza when frozen, remove the pepperoni under the cheese, then place everything back.
McCains Deluxe (in the plastic sealed package) = Blah. I don't care for the sauce, or lack of cheese.
Delissio = Crust is too bready, don't care for the sauce, doesn't taste good the next day when recooked.

As for local in Ottawa, Bella Vista is my favourite. They destroy Colonnade. I used to get a great deal at Schwarma Hasoon at Bank & Albion when I lived in the south end. $7 for a large pepperoni that was almost as good as Bella Vista.

I actually like Pizza Pizza, but that could be due the fact that the franchise in my area makes them better than the rest (Kennedy & Steeles). It beats the Pizza Hut (Finch & Midland) and the Pizza Nova (McCowan & Steeles).
Oh and the Pizza Pizza on Hunting Wood & Brimley wasn't that good the last time I tried it. The cheese didn't melt properly. The one on York Campus isn't that good either :(
I've also tried a few gourmet pizza (company treat) that cost $80 for a large. Way over priced and not worth it.
So... before you judge the whole chain, try different locations as they are owned/operated by different ppl.

my favourite is the food and drink section but it makes me hungry. i just tried amatto's for the first time. keele and mccormack location. pretty good. hawaiian and a veggie slice - good deal $3.25 and they're actually 2 smaller slices sold together. thin crust and chewy crust. not sure if i'd call it the best i've had. but i'll go again another time. they had lots of variety but i don't like beef so that ltd my choices.

I make my own pizza. And it is better than any pizza you can buy.. anywhere!
I'm a little bit full of myself when it comes to being an expert in the kitchen. I am good; .. maybe it's a natural ability to adapt?
- I can't comprehend how some people can say they "can't cook" -- I think if they are a disaster in the kitchen it's because of lack of effort. It's all about trial & error - if your food doesn't turn out the way you had hoped, adjust the recipe - add some pepper, spice it up.. tone it down, leave it in the oven longer.. take it out sooner - whatever! .. but the important thing, HAVE FUN doing it.
The way I see it, there are no 'failures', just opportunities for 'improvements'.
As such, I make my own pizzas every week - Friday is pizza day - and every week the pizza that comes out of my oven is ~"the BEST EVER"~. But this week, I really outdid myself: With the addition of a clove of garlic to my tomato sauce (there was none before), that very minor change totally revolutionized the flavour of the entire pizza. Wow - just when I thought my pizza was as good as it gets, it got better!
Why hadn't I thought of this before?
I'd made a pizza the size of an entire large cookie sheet, and it was so good that I immediately ate it all and then made another as I called some friends to invite them over to try it. After devouring the thing in less than 30seconds flat, they all agreed ... it IS ~the BEST EVER~.
So I *am* full of myself, but at least my friends are in agreement!!!

i mean, i LOVE pizza hut but they cost so much more than the el' cheapo places.
el-cheapo places are like... $24.99 for 3 large pizzas with 3 toppings each and a 2litre coke. and most of the boys don't appreciate better pizza and just wolf slices down faster than they can actually TASTE.
so unless it's just a couple of us, we always end up getting elcheapo stuff....

As requested:
RenegadeX's Recipe for ~"The Best Ever"~ Thin-Crust Pizza
--------------------------------------------------------------
(makes 4x 12"-round pizzas, or approx 2 cookie sheet sized pizzas)
Dough
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1/4 tsp granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup lukewarm water (for blooming of yeast)
- 1/3 cup whole wheat flour
- 3 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp olive oil
- 1 1/3 cups lukewarm water (to moisten dough)
- 2-3 tsp cornmeal (for dusting base)
Sauce
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 2 small cloves garlic (or 1 big one), minced
- 1/3 green bell pepper, *finely* diced
- (optional) 1 jalapeno or 2 or 3 thai chillies, chopped finely
- 1/2 large can whole tomatoes (or 2 large tomatoes, peeled and diced)
- 1/2 large can ground tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- generous amounts of oregano, basil, thyme - finely chopped if fresh, otherwise using dried is perfectly acceptable
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
Toppings
- 500g cheddar, grated
- 600g mozzarella, sliced *very* thinly (I use Silani brand rounds from my local supermarket)
- optional: crumbled bacon, chopped pineapple are my faves... whatever you like; Note: the basic cheese pizza is fantastic, if you're making it a thin-crust pizza, you may not want to overdo it with too many toppings!
Dough Prep
- Open the yeast packet and pour into the 1/3cup of lukewarm water with 1/4 tsp sugar for approx 5-6mins to bloom.
- Put both types of flour and salt into an electric mixer. With the dough hook attachment in place, turn on to Low to mix the flours.
- With the machine still on Low, pour in yeast mixture. Add the oil, and slowly add as much of the remaining 1 1/3cup of lukewarm water as needed until the mixture is of good consistency.
- Increase the spread slightly (my machine I leave at a '3' out of '6') . Continue to knead for approx 10mins.
- Remove the dough and place in a large glass bowl. Cover with a towel and leave in a warm area to rise (approx 1 3/4hrs), until dough is doubled in size. Once ready, punch down.
----> I prefer to speed things along! Instead, cover the bowl with seran wrap, place in the microwave on Defrost for 1min. Let stand 5 mins. Defrost 1 min. Let stand 5 mins. Continue cycle until dough has doubled in size.
Sauce prep
- Add 2 tblspoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil to a saucepan on medium heat, and sauté your garlic for a few minutes, being careful not to let it burn (though you do want it properly cooked as the longer you cook it the less harsh the 'garlic taste').
- Add your thinly-chopped green pepper (and jalapeno, if using). Sauté lightly for 4 or 5 minutes.
- Spoon ˝ of the can of whole tomatoes into the saucepan, and chop then finely with a spoon and/or sharp knife. Put the lid on and allow to cook on medium for 10 minutes.
- Add the ˝ can of ground tomato.
- Add basil & oregano, thyme, salt & pepper. Simmer on medium heat with lid on for 20-30 mins until sauce is thickened somewhat.
- Add the ketchup, stir in well, and remove from heat.
Putting it together
- Divide dough into 4*. Preheat oven to 485C
*note: instead of making 4 individual rounds, and as I don't have a pizza-stone, I usually just make my pizzas on large cookie sheets (20.5"x14"). At this size, my dough recipe yields 2 humongous (thin-crust) pizzas, which would adequately feed about 6 people.. though I have been known to eat a whole cookie-sheet sized pizza by myself in one sitting!!. Anyhow from here-on, my instructions assume you use cookie sheet(s).
Spray non-stick cooking spray (Pam) on the cookie sheet, then wipe its entire surface with paper towel (this spreads it evenly and removes excess).
Sprinkle with flour then tilt it to the sides and back and forth, banging the side with your hand to help move it around until the entire surface is dusted with a thin layer of flour (if there's an excess, discard it and use less next time!).
Take a portion of your dough, and roll out until very thin and fills the tray. I find results are best if I first 'pull' the dough into a rough rectangular shape and then toss it in the traditional pizza-making style to stretch the dough. With skill you won't even need a rolling pin; if you're less adventurous or in a hurry, just roll the entire thing! If the dough fills your cookie sheet but is 'too thick', using a knife trim one end a bit and roll it out to the full size again, adding the excess to any remaining dough portions. The thinner the better - it should almost be translucent, but if it is, you have gone too far! (though I do have to say, crispy baked cheese is very tasty!)
Once you are near the correct size/shape, lift the dough and dust the cookie sheet with cornmeal (tip if you're using a rolling pin: place the rolling pin about 1/3rd up the dough, then fold back the far end of the dough toward you, using the rolling pin to prevent the two surfaces of dough from sticking to each other while you dust the now-exposed half with cornmeal; repeat for the other half). The cornmeal adds a nice texture & flavour to the crust.
Spread sauce thinly over entire surface of pizza.
Add optional toppings.
Cover thinly with grated cheddar
(optional) now sprinkle lightly with dried basil.
lay the mozzarella slices over the surface of pizza; you can allow a bit of a gap between slices as it will spread out while melting.
Cook for approx 16-18 mins until crisp and golden.
Allow to stand a few minutes before eating (burning the roof of your mouth is no fun!)
Using a pizza-wheel, I typically cut my:
- cookie-sheet-sized pizza: first along the long edge into 3 approximately-even strips, then after turning the tray 90°, cutting as many 4"-5" swaths as needed. I then cut my corner pieces on the diagonal.
- round pizzas: in half, then estimating where I need to cut to divide each half into 3 slices, cut 2 additional lines across the whole thing. The result is 6 more or less even wedge-shaped slices!
Enjoy!
Btw.. it's a heck of a lot easier to just use store-bought dough - most supermarkets sell bags of pre-made dough in the Bakery Dept or deli department for about $2-$2.50 for a 225g or so bag (either fresh or frozen) - that quantity makes 1 cookie-sheet sized pizza + 1x 8"-round pizza. I often use these if pressed for time, but making your own dough is so much more fun.. and tasty!

Little Caesars is great, expensive, but great.
As for local places here, Mambos Pizza has the biggest pizzas out of anywhere in the city, chain or otherwise. I like Beauforts as well, cheap 3 for 1 pizzas and lots of toppings.
Unfortunately, since we live close to a Panago, that tends to be where I get my pizza from :( . Either that or the Pizza Hut inside the 7-11.

RenegadeX's Recipe for ~"The Best Ever"~ Thin-Crust Pizza
--------------------------------------------------------------
(makes 4 pizzas)
[list]Dough
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1/4 tsp granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup lukewarm water (for blooming of yeast)
- 1/3 cup whole wheat flour
- 3 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp olive oil
- 1 1/3 cups lukewarm water (to moisten dough)
- 2-3 tsp cornmeal (for dusting base)
Sauce
- 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 2 small cloves garlic (or 1 big one), minced
- 1 can tomatoes
- oregano, basil, finely chopped (fresh if possible, otherwise dried is acceptable)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
Toppings
- 600g mozzarella, sliced very thinly (I use the round packaged type)
- optional: crumbled bacon, chopped pineapple are my faves... whatever you like; Note: the basic cheese pizza is fantastic, you may not want to overdo it with too many toppings!
- Increase the spead slightly (my machine I leave at a '3' out of '6') .
Sauce prep
- Over medium heat, sautee your garlic. Using a seive, drain the can of tomatoes into a bowl; if you have a hand blender use a chopping blade and mince finely, otherwise dice finely before adding to garlic already in saucepan. Add basil & oregano, salt & pepper. Simmer on medium heat for 20-30 mins until sauce is thickened somewhat.
Putting it together
- Divide dough into 4. Preheat oven to 450C(I have convenction oven, if you have reg oven, preheat to 500C, but turn immediately down to 450C when putting pizza in)
- I prefer to make my pizzas on a large cookie sheet (20.5"x14"). At this size, this recipes yields 2 1/2 humungous pizzas, that would easily feed 6+ people.. a regular size cookie sheet or pizza-dish would easily yield 4 pizzas. Spray a little non-stick cooking spray on the cookie sheet, then wipe entire surface with paper. Sprinkle/dust with flour. Take a portion of your dough, and roll out until very thin. I find results are best if I first 'pull' the dough into a rough rectangular shape and then 'toss' to stretch the dough. With skill you won't even need a rolling pin; if you're less adventurous or in a hurry, just roll the entire thing. If the dough is still thick, but fills your cookie sheet, trim and add to remaining dough portions. The thinner the better - it should almost be translucent, but if it is, you have gone too far! Once you are near the correct size/shape, lift the dough and dust the cookie sheet with cornmeal; this adds a nice texture & flavour to the crust.
- Spread sauce thinly over entire surface of pizza.
- Add optional toppings.
- Slice the mozzarella very thinly and lay the slices over surface of pizza, leaving sufficient room between slices to allow for melting.
- Cook for approx 12-15mins until crisp and golden.
To serve, I like to cut the pizza into 4" strips along the shorter width of the cookie sheet, and then cut the strip in half (so as my cookie sheet is 14" wide, my slices are 4x7".)
Enjoy!
Btw.. you can of course use store bought dough - most supermarkets sell bags of pre-made dough in the Bakery Dept for about $1-$1.50. I often use these if pressed for time, but making your own dough is so much more fun.. and tasty!

In that case, just make the sauce - 20 minutes & you're done.
Slap it on store bought dough, a flatbread such as Splendido, or even a slice of bread - throw on some cheese and you're set! It'll be an improvement over your regular tomato base for sure.

A few people mentioned Colonade (sp?) pizza in Ottawa... I use to live in Ottawa and everyone was raving about it.. I had it a few times but I found it SUPER greasy and SUPER heavy.. I prefer my pizzas lighter... One great little place that I came across (not sure if it is still there) is in the Byward Market (in the little building there that has a french bakery on one side and a chocolate place on the other).. They had all kinds of gourmet slices that you can buy (like spinach and feta, or roasted red peppers and ....etc)...
I had a slice of Amato's pizza in toronto and it was definitely the best slice from a chain I have ever had.. (then again, it was like 2:00 am in the morning and everything would have probably tasted great :) )..
I am going to try Renegade's pizza recipe sometime soon..will post back the results !!

All the 7-11s in our city had mini-restaurant things for a while, 2 had fried chicken and the other 2 had pizza huts, always good because it was just up the street from school, nothing like a couple personal pan pizzas between classes.
I don't see why it's so disgusting, all the sevvies here are extremely clean, and the pizza hut part is run by employees hired specifically for that, they never mix and match the cashier and the pizza makers or anything.

It's the same idea as the Macs that now have Subway inside of them; it's the meaning of a convenience store. I agree too, they actually seem to be a little cleaner than the actual stores; you can see everything they do, instead of them being hidden in the back of the kitchen.

Water Buffalo mozzarella is the best mozzarella for pizza. If you have pizza in Italy (which is the best place for pizza on the planet by the way) you'll probably have water buffalo mozzarella. It's hard to find in Canada, here in Kitchener a little Italian place called Vincenzo's carries it. It's well worth the extra money over regular mozzarella. If you happen to be in Brazil, I've found it there as well, but not as good as from Italy.
For a tasty pizza try the following as toppings
-a light rub of olive oil
-tomato sauce
-gorgonzola (if you really hate gorgonzolla try cambozolla - a bit less -pungent than gorgonzola)
-arugula
Very, very tasty

Oooo, I was JUST coming in to put a plug in for Amato's.
I'm not sure if they're a chain or not, but I'm totally addicted to their Pollo Bascillico pizza - no cheeze, chicken and mushrooms with pesto. Man, it's good.
I have found their prices reasonable actually, for a nice big slice of their 'gourmet' pizza at 3.99, I think it's good value and feels like reasonably good food too.

Yeah old Vesuvios is great just for their pizza though. I tried other menu items and it wasn't up to par.
I bought a pizza stone for 30 dollars from Williams Sonoma and borrowed some pizza dough from work and I've been loving every minute of it.
Thin crust 14" pizza with spicy sausage, grilled chicken, roasted red peppers and some fried onion and mushroom shavings on either a pesto or tomato sauce and some bocconcino put on in the final few minutes of cooking. -----Oh the feasts I have when blazed.

For the lazy folks who want to make their own dough but think RenegadeX's is to much work:
mix 1 pack quick rise yeast in 1 cup warm water
add 1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. olive oil
2 1/2 cups flour
best mixed in a mixer with dough hooks
let stand 30 min. to rise
roll, top with you favorites and bake at 425 for 20 min.
for those who like the Pizza hut style, sprinkle some corn meal on the pan before placing the dough on it.

Yumm, Pizza.
My bro used to manage a Little Caesar's before leaving for University. He was very strict about following Little's Caesar's guide for making Pizza. That's why it was so good and everyone ordered it. When he left the new manager didn't care much and Little Caesar's closed a year later.....wonder why?
Anywhoo, Best local Pizza in Essex County is either Rina's (spicy pepperoni), Naples (Shredded pepperoni and stone baked taste), or Tropicana @ The Dock. Trops Mediterannean style is the best. Black olives, feta, onions, and tomato. No meat for the veggie's out there. I love it even though I am a strict carnivore :)
Best frozen Pizza is President's Choice Thin Crust Broasted Chicken. Don't know why, but I love it.

I can't imagine anybody thinking that Pizza Hut or Dominoes makes the best pizza. I feel bad for you...
If you are out west, you have to try Vern's. That's pizza. My fav is Vern's Special.

wiseguy,
If ya desire some Pizza Delight or anyone else out there who's reading this thread. there IS still 1 around these parts .. If ya head up to where I live in midland, ont. & you continue on hwy 27 ( I believe ) that brings you into the next town called Penetanguishine or Penetang to us locals .. also loonytown as there is now a superjail & a big mental ward beside each other on the outskirts of the far tip of the shoreway. *LOL* :P
Anyways if you find the little mall/plaza thing be4 the local crappy tim's there is a pizza delight in there.
I thnk Pizza Delight is still around in the Maritimes....
I'm almost sure I ate there when I was camping in PEI 6 or so years ago...
Also ate at a Ponderosa in St. John's, NB..... they seem to have disappeared in Ontario as well..... :(

Here are mine:
2-4-1 pizza:
Cheapestly made pizza you can buy w/ quality to match *L* Hasn't been 1 open here for a few yrs now cause of it & the few other indipendants with far better quality & value.
Pizza Pizza:
overpriced cardboard ( MOST storebought r better) Mind ya the "double cheeseburger" was a good 1 from them. "Crust made with pulp" & not springwater should be said on there box's & sause doesn't taste right.
Pizza Nova:
good average pizza .. can be bland at times ... but reasonably priced for the quality toppings they offer.
Pizzaville:
above average pizza .... reasonable pricing .. good variety of types & toppings ... panzerotti baked is great (avoid fried ).
Pizza Hut:
The pizza buffet is terrible & usualy doesn't have the stuff ya want to eat. Desert Pizza is good thought. Meatlovers stuff crusted should be greaseluvers stuff crust. everything is bland tasting from them.
Toppers Pizza:
quality pizza @ a reasonable to great price. Had 1 of there deluxe personals & a coke & it was deeelishous & filling.
Pappa's Pizza(local):
quality varies (usualy good most times), there deals or combo's are @ great price's (lrg.14" 3 topping pizza w/ 4 bags of chips, 4 pop & 2 dipping sauses for $16.50), pizza toppings are good quailty depending when ya get it. other items good quality as well.
Perfect Pizza(local):
good quality pizza @ a good price, there "Taco" Pizza is primo (real ground beef, jalapeno peppers, onions, mozzarella cheese, topped with cheddar cheese & includes sour cream dipping sause).
Store bought:
Delisio:good flavors & good price
PC woodfire thin crust pizza: great flavoring & toppings.
Best of course is self made .... made quite a few "frankenstein" pizza's that turned out to taste good when I thought they wouldn't. *LOL* :D

Been wanting to make Pizza dough and bread dough for a while.....finally did using Renegadesx recipe......works well. Better than the one from Kitchen Aid. I did not have any whole wheat....just APF.
Didnt have many condiments ....used MC spag sauce ( in future will add a little Italian herbs/spices)....cheddar...sliced mushrooms.....quite ok.
First I put 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a small pan with a chopped garlic clove. Heat and the oil gets infused with the garlic...dont burn garlic.
Brush infused garlic oil on the rolled out dough...add sauce etc. I also added a little of the garlic oil to the top before baking. Someone suggested adding some pepper to the dough mix.
I found that the rolling pin did a good job....easier than spreading with fingers...
This is my first attempt so maybe I will be able to throw up in the air :cheesygri like the pros.
All in all....very easy....lots o fun.
Looking forward to getting the 'right' condiments (pepperoni/peppers/mozzerella)...should be very good
Have a Pizza party and let everyone make their own..

Totally agree with aznspddmm. Amato 1 and Dominos #2. As for Little Caesars I remember there used to be one at Kennedy and sheppard in Toronto. I you want Little caesars enough, i guess you can always go to detroit.

i took renegade's advice about making your own pizza. i finally made my pizza yesterday and it was the best - tasted like authentic italian and so much better than pizza nova. i made a pizza margharita since i don't like too many toppings. i don't think i'll buy pizza again (way too expensive) and i doubt that i'll buy the frozen dr. oetker pizzas either.
i bought the uncooked ball of pizza dough for only $1.25 at NO Frills and that was more than enough for one large cookie sheet. i lightly oiled the pan first. bought unico pasta sauce (garlic flavoured) and added a bit of olive oil to the sauce for more flavour. used lots of sauce since that's how i like it. some mozzarella. and then some grated romano cheese. and added lots of torn up fresh basil leaves and very light sprinkling of chili flakes. optional to add fresh basil leaves at end of cooking instead of before. i like it either way.
it was cheap to make and best of all, quick and easy!! why did i wait to make this? thanks renegade.

Btw, something to add, RE: non-homemade pizza:
- COSTCO has some VERY DECENT deep-pan-style frozen pizzas for $7.49(might have bee .69, but def not .99) FOR TWO (in 1 box). Your choice of 'flavours', all the same price, which is an AWESOME deal. I ate one the other day -- I had about 1/3 for dinner along with a soup and it was enough - 1 pizza easily would be sufficient for 2 ppl for dinner --- which is amazing value when you think about it-- that's under $2/person!! If you have a large freezer, these are great to stock up on -- perfect for days when you don't have much time, can't be bothered to cook, or if friends drop over unexpectantly.

My three picks are not in order or anything..
Pizza Hut: for lunch buffets and regular pizzas..grease.. (closer to where I am)
Cora Pizza: located in the Spadina area next to Papa's..Find it is better and the gourmet pizzas are good after clubbing or if you down there late @ night. Cha Cha Chan and Al Pesto is a recommendation.
Amato's: Overall it is really good and not close from where I live..

According to critics.
You really got to go to italy for real pizza you know besides the wood burning oven the dough is left under a rock for a few days, yes just like sour dough bread and a chunk taken out and used with fresh dough hence you will get a great crust so mlc and the gang is sort of correct in their method of letting the dough rest like that.
The wood burning oven cannot be replicated therefore a gas or electric oven cannot provide what it takes to make the chemistry work.
Now this is translated by me in brief from what my lecturer on food science and history laid down to us last week.

Forgive me if this has been posted but my favourite pizza in East Toronto (Scarborough) is either The Real McCoy's (Markham road 1 light south of ellsmere) and Hunters Pizza and Souvlaki house (Birchmount and huntingwood)
Both places the pizzas are huge, have a very tasty texture and just load on the toppings. A single large 2 topping pizza at McCoys filled me and 2 friends up.

Pizza Pizza's secret recipe:
-1 ball of dough
-3 grams of cheese
-place it next to a photo of a tomato and hope through osmosis, some of the tomato makes its way to the pizza.
Their pizza is dreadful; far worse than what you can find in the microwaveable aisle in any grocery. Their chicken and onion rings are quite good, however.

tjayl
Sep 14th, 2009, 04:49 AM
The best I've had is in Regina Saskatchewan, at Houston Pizza. Their all dressed pizza is amazing. To me, it's what a pizza should be, since it's what I grew up with. All I can find in Ontario is the little cardboard style crust with a few toppings.
A Houston's all dressed is thick crust, and then about 1/2" of meat, and then cheese on top of that. A 15" pizza is about $40, to give you some idea of how many toppings are actually on this thing.
CBC (I believe it was them) did a show sometime in the early 2000s called the Great Canadian Food show, and pizza from Regina was picked as the best. Several places make it similarly, and people from there understand what you are talking about when you say Regina style or Saskatchewan style pizza. It's just something I haven't found around here.

I went to Pizzeria Libretto. Night and day. As close to real authentic Naples pizza as you're going to get outside of Naples. Everything was so delicious. The dough had a smoky flavour, chewy on the inside, singed and crispy on the outside.

Checked it out last night, nice restaurant, better service than Desserts plus located on Weston Road and Langstaff.
Terms of Pizza, I ended up ordering the Hawaiin (sp). I didn't get the traditional Margareita since I'm not a fan of just dough and sauce with little or no toppings. In addition, the Hawaiian pizza located at the pizza place in the heart of Niagara falls is one of my favorites. The pizza arrived in about 15 minutes right from wood oven which I would like to add, adds a nice aroma to the restaurant, the apparent smokiness first hits you when you approach the restaurant and immediately releases the waters in your mouth.
http://www.anilsharma.ca/images/pizza1.jpg
The flavors were excellent and the topping had the usual ham and pineapple, however they also added spanish onions which added a nice dimension to the pizza. The crust wasn't as well done as I'd like, but I think it was done on purpose as most people probably don't like the authentic burnt crust you find in traditional old world pizza joints.

Was this the best pizza in the GTA?

I live just a 2 minute walk from Pizza Pizza and I never go there! Awful cardboard textured pizza! Not worth the convenience. Here are my picks for Toronto:
Independent: Amico's Pizza (good prices and open until 4am Thurs-Sat)
Frozen: Presidents Choice Deep Dish (pepperoni & sausage)
Chain: Dominoes (cheap and easy to pick up on the way home from work)
Store Bought: Sobeys (add your own extra cheese to make it better)
I don't mind Pizza Hut but it's a little pricey for what you get. A medium from Amico's is the same as a Pizza Hut large and it's cheaper too.

Moe's is famous because Elvis supposedly visits there...remember?
Colonade is good if you like thick crust.
Is House of Pizza on Walkley?
the one with the menu that also says House of Greek and Mexican?
-if it is the same place they are good.
Their mexican food is pretty good, esp the chicken tacos. they use real chicken breast meat and not crappy stuff.
Super Duper pizza is good also, kind of reminds me of Colonade pizza though.
pizza pizza is mediocre.
The pepperoni is ok if it is fresh.
just had a cheese slice for lunch and it is really forgetable.
pizza pizza garlic cheese bread is good though...but exact same as Dempsters frozen slices but w cheese.

Calabria Bakery at 1772 Midland Av. below Ellesmere, makes some of the best thin crust wood-fired pizza at a reasonable cost; each one cooked to order, $8 to $12 for a 12 inch pie.
They are expertly made by an older gent who only works Thursday and Friday, until 4PM. Definitely worth a side trip.
(There may a line up, but most people are in a rush and getting sandwiches or steam table things. You give your pizza order to the cook and then watch him as he prepares it, showing you how to do it at home if you have a very hot oven!)

Calabria Bakery at 1772 Midland Av. below Ellesmere, makes some of the best thin crust wood-fired pizza at a reasonable cost; each one cooked to order, $8 to $12 for a 12 inch pie.

I googled this place, and this was the first hit I got: Link (http://www.calabriabakery.ca/home.html) Apparently they have a location in Markham...would you happen to know the pizza is also good at that location?

The pizza pie is very very good, a little more expensive than your average pizza though, however if you're a true pizza fan, its a must try.

Looking at the website, I don't think the two are connected. It looks more upscale, and no empahsis on being a bakery plus lunch counter (a la Commiso)
However, if you go inside and smell the wood burning oven, and can order a simple pizza for $8, you are in a good place.

I've been to the Markham location; pizza was good, but not great. If you look at the website under the contact us page, it does list both Scarborough and Markham locations so they are affiliated somehow. Seems like it is family run.
My vote goes to Fratelli's Village Pizzaria in Scarborugh.

For wood-burning oven pizza on the go jayt90 has it. Calabria Bakery in Scarborough Thursdays and Fridays. These pies were cooked in around 5 minutes.
Pepperoni (notice the charring along the edges of the crust from the intense heat):

Calabria - Capicola, hot pepper, and black olives (again notice the charring, and even a little ash hit the crust):

Fratelli Village Pizzeria also has a very good wood-burning oven pizza. This shot is a half of a leftover Fratelli pizza (pepperoni, bacon, hot sausage, ham, mozzarella) and half of a Milan's pizza (grilled chicken, sun dried tomatoes, feta, red onion, mozzarella). They have awesome calamari and tiramisu as well.

I used to love Cora's slices but I am rarely in the area anymore.
Otherwise I make my own pizza at home, most chain pizzas are not good.

duckdown, they are all wood oven pizzas, Fratelli's didn't seem to get the same char, so they must be cooking them at a lower temperature. Calabria's oven is a bit smaller as well so the pizzas sit closer to the wood fire.

I had a $9 pizza (Nina) with cheese, sliced tomatoes, and anchovies (lots of them). It was delicious.

OMG how could I forget about the the pizza place on Church St. that's downstairs! They have huuuge slices made fresh right in front of you and are open until the wee wee hours of the morning (about 4am!) Some of you may know this joint as "Ghetto Pizza" LOL but I forget the real name. :D

Albany Pizza is great. It is located on Landsdowne in the No Frills plaza. They make great gourmet pizza and the owner Pepi is a cool guy.
