Hi just wondering if anyone can provide some advice/help for my simple setup.

Dlink Xtreme N Wireless Router (DIR-655) located on top floor using WEP encryption.

I have a laptop that is using a D-Link Wireless G USB (WUA-1340) but gets a weak in the basement. (3 floors total)

I've recently upgraded from a DLINK d-6124 thinking that the new one would improve the signal but it hasn't. Any suggestions? Do I need an access point in the basement? or should I try a LINKSYS or different brand ?

TIA,
TN

Im just guessing but have you tried switching the wireless usb thing.. could be faulty or isnt good for receiving signals.

You are really pushing the limits trying to get a reliable signal through 3 floors. You could get another router on another floor and set it up as a repeater, in hopes that bridges the gap. You could also try external gain antennas on the router. Unfortunately, working with RF signals is kind of "trial and error" for the home hobbiest, and nothing is guaranteed to work in all situations.

That's what I was thinking getting another router and using it as a repeater, however when I emailed DLINK asking them which model would be compatible with the DIR655, I didn't get any responses. :(

Is it possible at all to run a CAT-5e cable from the 2nd floor to at least the main floor ?

BTW, why WEP ??
