Does anyone else have Cogeco Highspeed internet? I just had it set up under an hour ago and I'm getting terrible speeds. Back in Toronto when I had Rogers Highspeed, I got 900down/200up on average, and now I'm getting 600down/150up, and it costs pretty much the same. I'd like to compare with some other people to see if what I'm getting is normal or not.
I should note, though, that webpages open up exponentially faster on Cogeco, but I can't explain why because my DL speed according to speedtest.net is lower.

What do you get from there? If it's anything less than what you should be getting, call them up and check with them.

We are on Cogeco.
How do I test the speeds you quote?

I'm getting 610/144.
The brochure that came with the modem and related peripherals says for Highspeed Standard I should be getting at least 1000/640, and Highspeed Lite I should be getting 640/150. I need to phone them and find out why we're getting Lite speeds but paying for Standard speeds.

Yeah, something is seriously wrong then. They probably just need to update your profile so just call and ask. They'll probably make you do all the usual steps (plug directly into computer, restart modem, etc.) but it sounds like they just screwed up your profile setting.

This is really good. Your download speed is 10x that of Highspeed Standard. Which ISP/speed do you have? Highspeed Pro from Cogeco only goes up to 1600/1000, so I can't explain how you're getting 10000/600 unless you're connecting from a workplace.
Or perhaps you mean 949.5 instead of 9495? 949.5 would make sense because 1000/600 is Highspeed Standard.

Don't mean to rain on the parade, but that's standard speeds, 10mb down and 640 kb up. :)
I have Cogeco since The Wave and typically always get very good speeds with some slow downs during peak times.

No parade rained on...lol...the numbers just seemed a lot better than those posted in the summaries. We are happy with our speeds....6pcs going most of the evening, and not sluggish at all.
For that matter cogeco, hasn't (yet) imposed the limits Bell (which isn't available to us here) and Rogers have, so we will continue to use it.

Another rainy day: Cogeco does have limits, and does throttle P2P traffic. For regular users they are reasonable and you wouldn't notice.

How does the download limit work? The brochure says for Highspeed Lite I have 2gb down/up combined to use every month. Does this mean if I download more than 2gb a month, I'd get charged extra? The slower speed I can handle and work around, but if I'm limited to 2gb a month (pretty much 1 DVD download), I need to upgrade to Pro (30gb). Standard has 15gb. When I had Rogers Highspeed (1000/600 give or take), I'd easily rack up 100gb a month, and I didn't get charged extra. What gives? :(

I am not on Cogeco anymore. I am not sure if they actually charge for overage, but you can get warnings and then cancelled. When I was with them I got one warning (I was 500% over the cap midway through the month - with almost half of it upload). With cable, my understanding is that they are much more worried about your uploading as it has more effect on other users.

I wish I would have opted to go with Rogers again. I only chose Cogeco because I've heard so many things from friends in the area that it's the best thing to get out here, and it's much cheaper. I'm being charged only 10$ less than Rogers for the same speed (and this might be me being charged Lite Speed. I phoned them and it turns out they made a mistake and I'm being billed Lite fees for Lite speed, meaning I need to pay more to go to Standard).

What gives? :(
Lack of competition.
From what I'm reading on their site, Standard is 60GB while Pro is 100GB and lite is 10GB - pretty much just like Rogers. Roger is also starting to charge for overages come June, which is why everyone is downloading like mad. I don't know how Cogeco deals with overages.

Check Cogeco's website, you're looking at the old information. They upped their caps a couple years back.

I hate to tell you Setz but you can't get Rogers down here. Thank the CRTC. ;) We've been on Cogeco for internet for 6 years. We've never had an outage and get great speeds. We've never been hit with an overage charge either even though the kids download music like crazy...

I don't think so. Cogeco Internets is proper. Cogeco sells internet, so it's Cogeco Internets, similar to "Bob's Games" sells you a game, or "Dill's Books", for selling you a book.

I belive it would be "internets" if Cogeco was a single person. Since "Cogeco" is a company, you would subscribe to Cogeco Internet.

Hahah. Yah, this thread is a little old now eh. Oh well.
Just to add something though, Below is an email I got from them today. Sheesh I HATE Cogeco!! lol Getting rid of them at the end of the month. By the way if anyone is wondering they dont charge for being over bandwith. They could if they want to (its in the user agreement) but they dont...They just disconnect you. At the third warning they disconnect you for a day I think, the forth is I think for 3 days. After 4 I dunno what they do. Right now I'm at 152 % bandwith used. Upload is 38902 download is 54874.
Speed for cogeco is great!! Never had a problem with them Throttling ever. I have had times where my actual download speed was faster then 1mbps (1000+kB/s) My only problem with them is thier cap. That's why I'm leaving them. 60gb combined is not enough!

Hi again
This is the second time we are sending you this email notice. Cogeco's monitoring
system has detected excess bandwidth utilization coming to/from your system. It is
possible that your system has been compromised with malware (ie: a virus or trojan)
that is allowing a remote entity to utilize your system resources. Alternate
explanations for this traffic could include transferring large files to/from your
system or unmonitored peer-to-peer programs such as BitTorrent.
Bandwidth is the term used to describe the amount of data being transferred to or
from a particular system, web site or web service. Bandwidth is typically measured in
some multiple of bits or bytes over a specified period of time, such as a second or a
month. For example, it takes more bandwidth to transfer a 3D graphic image in one
second than it does to transfer a 2-line email message in the same amount of time.
COGECO monitors the amount of traffic to and from all modems to identify excess usage
patterns that cause harm to the COGECO network and its subscribers. Current bitcap
limits can be found in the 'Bandwidth, Data Storage and Other Limitations' section of
Cogeco's Acceptable Use Policy which is located at http://www.cogeco.net/aup
We encourage you to view your bandwidth usage by visiting Cogeco's Self Care site at
https://selfcare.cogeco.com/ and login with your primary email account and password.
If you are experiencing problems or require a password to be reset please contact
Cogeco at 1-866-879-7179. PLEASE NOTE THAT COGECO WILL NOT ACCEPT EMAIL REQUESTS FOR
PASSWORD RETRIEVAL OR MODIFICATION.
If you are unable to contain or investigate this issue immediately we request you
temporarily disconnect your system from the internet until you are able to further
investigate. To prevent any possible interruption in service it is suggested that you
limit downloads and/or uploads of large files until the end of the month - your
bandwidth counter is reset to zero on the first day of the calendar month.
If you do not have access to an up to date security scanner or you would like a
second opinion you can run a free online security scan at
http://www.cogeco.net/security - you may also be interested in Cogeco's Security
Services which are free for most customers. Alternately Windows users can visit
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/support/default.mspx for further information on
system security.
***Remember that security scanners need to be updated with new signature files
frequently and Windows operating systems need to check for critical security updates
on a regular basis.***
If you are unable to find any reason for this activity ensure you are scanning with
an updated virus scanner or get a second opinion from a free online scanner. Also
ensure you are scanning all systems in your household. If you have a wireless home

home network.
Sometimes even updated security scanners cannot detect the most recent threats, for
