View Full Version : Can I be allergic to beer?

Recently I've noticed that I cannot drink any kind of beer. Light, lager, ale 5%, ANY kind of beer. I would simply take a sip and feel like throwing up. I thought maybe I was sick, because for the past few years I was fine with it, but after a few more times it happening I didnt know what to think. I went to the doctor and he said I might be allergic to yeast or something in the beer. But doesn't bread have yeast, so how would I be allergic? Is it because it is in a different form? Kinda annoying since it happened right out of the blue. I can drink hard liquor fine, just not beer...

Hmm if you're just vomiting, it might only be an intolerance and not a true allergy (ie. not immune based, likely not serious and life threatening).

Yeast allergies are actually really rare, it could be the hops, barley, or additives such as sulfites. Maybe it's due to the salicylates. Do you get the same reaction when drinking wine? Beers and wines have tons of salicylates, but most hard liquor does not. Sulfites are also found in beers and wines, but not in many hard liquors.

Go see an immunologist, he can do an allergen test for specific ingredients to find the culprit.

EDIT: By the way, it's very common for allergies/intolerances to occur later in life, so your situation would be absolutely normal

it might just mean your a light weight.
Beer is more of an acquired taste. Its quite a harsh taste, most younger people don't like it if they don't develop a taste for it. But a lot of people just kick it down just b/c thats what everyone else is drinking.

I dont throw up, I just feel like it. I take a sip and I basically have to force it down, I dont feel sick. But I mean I drank lots of beer before, perfectly fine. The doc told me to take a reactin before and see if it helps, keeping my fingers crossed.

Prob should of added I am 19. Last summer id be fine drinking beers like corona and moosehead, but now like I said before, I have to force it down. I had stella on the weekend, and after a pint I started getting a stomach ache

I know how you feel... I was told it was the hops and crap in beer... I can take vodka and the "hard stuff" no problem.

Doc said take an anti-histamine and alcohol?

Try some wheat beer. Does it happen when you drink Rum and Cokes, try Amaretto sours (too many of those will make your stomach ache because it's so sweet  )

Oh ya, do you turn red? My dad turns red. :P

Try to stick with domestic beer. Then test it with the foreign beer. If you have the same results, find another beverage.

I have a friend who is allergic to beer. He can put away astonishing quantities of vodka, but a few sips of beer and he is vomiting.

man that's disgusting, atleast beer tastes like it came from something edible. vodka just tastes like rubbing alcohol.

Did you have an experience where you drank too much beer one time and were really sick afterwards? Sometimes when that happens with one particular type of alcohol, it makes you feel sick when you drink it later.

If not, people can develop allergies even if they did not previously have them and there are things in beer that you could be allergic to.

^ That's what I was thinking too. I'd enjoyed the taste of beer since I was a toddler, but when I was 19, I got alcohol poisoning from drinking too much too quickly at a party. After that, my brain told me, my throat and my stomach "you do not want this" whenever I put a beer bottle to my lips. Despite my best efforts to overcome the issue, and my friends best efforts to help me(!), it took about a year before I beat it. And I've never looked back!!

First, not all beer tastes the same...the stardard Canadian Lagers/Pilsers tend to have a very pronounced taste; a pale ale a much sweeter and hoppier taste; and a traditional ale little carbonation and much sweeter...

Yes, you can be allergic to ingredients in the beer...are you allergic to certain grains? You can be allergic to hops. Since many beers no longer have preservatives, did you have a beer that was off?

This might be random, but it could be any new medication you are taking... I was taking one medication one time and anytime I would drink I would black out after 1 beer... needless to say I didn't continue drinking very much on it

A good quality vodka is tasteless, the inferior ones do taste like rubbing alcohol. Price has nothing to do with quality either. Silent Sam is the best I know of and is a Canadian brand, fyi.
Getting back on topic, beer is for sissy's.

what kind of beer do you drink that has 'crap' in it? That's probably the problem right there. 'crap' is not good to be consumed due to possible e-coli and other such viruses.
