I'm trying to buy something for a hockey fans friend. Is there a well priced store in Canada for hockey equipment? I know there're SportChek and SportMart, but are there other well priced pro shop? I don't want him to be upset that I'm buying overpriced low quality stuff for him.

you talking actual equipment or just jerseys and apparel?
if equipment, look in the yellow pages under sporting goods, look for a local hockey shop, go there, talk to the workers, see what they use and go from there.

I'm thinking to buy real equipment. Is there any good online store though? I prefer to shop online than buying in store because I want to be able to do some research before buying. You know...for a total beginner

Thanks. I just did some searches, and found that hockeymonkey.com and hockeygiant.com, are a lot cheaper than the Canadian stores (let say the skates) I really wonder why? Aren't many of the skates or hockey equipments "made in Canada"?

those sites are in the us and shipping is not cheap.
Also a lot of skates are not made in canada any more.. even top of the line stuff.
If you are going to be buying online, you should check in a store first to actually see what you are buying and get the right size.

+1
Last year I tried on a pair of Bauer One 90's at my local sports store and then bought them online. I saved over $200.
P.S. I really think they make me skate faster... At least with all those fancy designs it should look like I'm good!!!

If you're in Toronto, try National Sports, or Just Hockey http://www.justhockeysfs.com/

i know you would like it to be a surprise, but hockey equipment needs to be tried on first. if it doesnt fit it doesnt serve its purpose.
take your friend with you.

Since you're in Ottawa, go to Hockey One or Lacroix Sports. They're not exactly cheap, but they do have clearance sales and you might hit the jackpot. A friend of mine got his Grafs from Hockey 1 for pretty cheap.
I usually just order online from hockeymonkey or hockeygiant. I'd only go to H1 to get my skates sharpened (before I got my t-blades).

If this is for a beginner...just go to Canadian Tire and get some equipment on the cheap. No sense buying expensive stuff at this point. The only thing I wouldn't skimp on is skates and helmet. Anything else, can be had at CT for like $30-60 per piece of equipment. Skates - I'd spend like $120-175. Helmet - Look for something comfortable. I think pretty much all are CSA certified but just not as comfortable as others.

+1! get some cheap gear and play in it for a few years, see if you like it... SportChek/SportMart/Canadian Tire/Walmart all have lower end gear. You could probably get outfitted for about $200 (except for skates). I've been playing in cheap equipment for years and have yet to feel the need to upgrade anything. Do get a good pair of skates though that fit. It will make the whole experience much better.

I really recommend going to the store to try gear on. I've gone with nike bauer gear for all protective gear. Downside is the expensive price for the ligher and more comfortable versiosn of their gear.

Tried to buy 4 inline wheels from hockeygiant, was quoted a charge of $32 for shipping...ridiculous! Rather get raped on ebay.
