can anyone recommend a good pair gloves for lifting heavy weights? Looking for something with extra padding in the palm for a better grip and to protect myself from calluses. Been using various nike dri-fits for quite some time now and I think it's time for a change.

that has bad grip.
If you really wanted to cheap out... get some chalk.
but the best pair of gloves i ever had are grizzlie brand from Cad. tire.
REgular gloves, but they have awesome wrist support.

I dont use gloves but I understand those who use them at the gym where a lot of idiots dont wipe down the weights after they use them.%90 of the lifters dont use them I seen some newbies using them lifting 85lbs presses:lol:

thats bad practise...
Gloves give you better support and grip which allows you to go heavier.

I used to not wear gloves and then I tried it and I liked it only cuz it gives me extra grip and inturn helps me lift heavier weights.. I use Harbinger with the wrist strap.. I find the wrist strap helps alot when you go 200lbs+..
Check it out here.. Harbinger Wrist Strap Weight lifting Gloves (http://www.sportchek.ca/sportchek/do/style?menuId=94&styleId=27571)

Yeah I use the gloves to prevent caluces. I have used expensive and cheap. Find no real difference between them. I'd rather not have wrist support - Lack of wrist support helps build your forearm muscles because you have to use those muscles more during a lift.
I'd say just go to Canadian Tire or Walmart and get the cheapest they have. Got mine from walmart for like $4 or something.

I like harbinger as well. They are the easiest to take off when I'm sweaty. I like the short fingers on them.

The Harbinger gloves have long wrist wraps.. you can easily loosen them and have the same flexibility as if you're not wearing em.. but trust me, it helps alot when you're doing heavy barbell bunch presses.
To me, wrist support is way way important when benching heavy weights cuz it's easy to tweak a wrist without and then those little wrist injuries linger and they screw up your whole workout routine... I'd say get them and loosen them up when you don't need it...ie. tighten when benching and loosen when curling weights.

I don't bother with them, I can do 295 deadlift with double over. Now, I don't know if a guy was doing it out of habit, or he seriously had that bad of grip, but he was doing over under, 135 with straps. Unless he had some rehab, I don't see how your grip can be that bad, if it is, you should work on it. I would work on grip strength more if you cant lift heavier w/o them. The rest of my body gives out before my grip does.

I have Nike fitness gloves with zipper closure. Lasted me almost 2 years now -- I'm actually surprised because previous two pairs (can't remember the brands) were crap and would fall apart in a few months. Bought them at Can. Tire.

Nothing wrong with doing 135 with straps, some people have higher grip than others, and it's a back workout after all. Not everbody's body is build alike, you can be doing 295 deadlifts, but only curling 30lbs.

I do curl 30 lbs  To keep form. Dead works the whole body, mostly back and legs.
Generally, if someone is weak in an area, they either train it, or avoid it. I know some people that only use them at very high weight, others use em as crutches.

If you deadlift with mixed grip always then I don't see a problem using mixed grip with 135 :D

I used to do that but double over doesn't translate much to mixed. it feels different. I just do mixed grip from 135 and up
