Looking to start indoor basketball and was wondering of good suggestion for basketballs. Looking to spend around $20 - $50 so nothing too fancy. Also, anyone tried using those patent leather balls for indoor use? How are they?

i hate using the patent leather balls for indoor play. They're all glitz and glam. If you take em outside they are done for as well. The feel just isn't the same as a good old leather ball.

Mind you I don't know any good leather balls by name.... haha. Good luck though. I use an indoor//outdoor spalding infusion and i like that it has the little pump inside of it. It's such hassle finding a needle and a bike pump just to pump up a basketball.

oh hah. Yeah, I expected regular players wouldn't like patent leather balls. I only wanted to see some responses since I never used them for ball.

I'm mainly looking for a indoor ball only so outdoor play won't be an issue as I have a ball for outdoor. I heard good things about Spalding fusion so that may be one ball I will have to consider. Thanks.

For indoor, the thread starts and ends with the Wilson Evoultion. I was in your exact same boat a year ago looking for a good ball for not too much money (looking to spend about $50). I read good reviews all over the place online and tried to find it. They only sell the women's version in SportChek's and National Sports' but I was lucky as an employee at one of those stores sold me one of his used ones for $20.

It's an amazing ball, even though it was used... almost always chosen for pick-up games and now I've seen more and more people in my gym using them. Supposedly, you can find them in some downtown stores at Yonge/Dundas area. Can't be 100% but if you can find the ball, you won't be sorry.

I just called up SportChek in the Eaton Centre and they claim they have the Wilson Evolution in stock, price is $44.99 (regulation size, not girl's size).

I have a $50 GC and need to get a new bball, so will report back if they actually have it.

+1 for the Evo, I've seen them on sale at National Sports for $40.

+2 for the Wilson Evolution, i wont play with anything else.
It may seem a bit pricey for a basketball, but if you stick to playing with it on indoor surfaces only (hardwood, gym tiles), it'll last you a while.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like the Wilson evolution is a solid choice for an indoor ball. Will have to look up on it and in store to see if it's good :D.

My top 3:
Wilson Solution
Wilson Evolution
Nike 2000
I bought my Solution 3-4 years ago at Sportchek and it feels as good as it was the first day I got it. Not sure if they sell it anymore though.

Wilson Evolution confirmed at my local Sportchek (Richmond Hill), so I am 99.9% sure that this is in stores nationwide - as my local Sportchek isn't anything special.

This is regulation size (29.5/7). Price is $49.99+taxes = $56.49. The ball is nice, definitely keep it for indoor use only.

Glad you like it.

I went to SportChek, National Sports, SportsMart, etc... and I could never find it. That was at the end of last summer though.
Maybe they started stocking it recently.

Don't play with gimmicks. Best case scenario is that it doesn't work the way you want it to. Worst case scenario is that regular balls don't feel right to you after using it.

Agreed, you're gonna get used to playing with a "gimmick" ball then when it comes gametime you're be known as the "air" man... and i don't mean you can jump ;)

I bought a Spalding Never Flat... awesome bball.

Everyone has different preference though, so I'm not sure how many people actually like the Never Flat, but I think it's great :o

I have this one as well. Good ball for the price but over the years, mine has lost iits grip so it is pretty smooth. But still has a nice feel to it and the material is pretty good.

Played with the Evo last night, not bad at all. Pretty good grip, nice feel and has a good bounce. I like !

I have played with Jets in my high school days and I'd have to say they are one of the best ones out there.

I've tried every single ball that's come out basically, at least the top quality ones. In my opinion, the best ball is the Jet Evolution's from 5 years ago. Unfortunately, I'm not sure where you can buy this ball anymore, but it's hands down the best I've ever played with. Another favourite of mine is the balls from the older Nike N Touch line like the 1500 Varsity.

Most people these days prefere a more tacky feel on the ball for whatever reason, so balls like the TF-1000 are probably the most used. I prefere the composite balls that feel like broken in leather, but it's hard to fine them anymore. I also have the Fiba ball and the NBA ball, both take forever to break in and quite a while to get used to shooting with.

My favourites of the balls currently still in production are the Wilson Solution and The Rock, so I would look into getting either one of those personally.
