So, my discount with rogers highspeed is almost up (20% off for 12 months) and I was thinking of switching to 3web. Is it worth the $10 I will save each month?

Only cable internet is available in my area:(

Thanks!

It's the same internet service, without rogers tech support and less cost.
Do you need that tech support from Rogers?

I used 3web out in BC (so they use shaw's equipment, opposed to the east where they use rogers).

Ran just like shaw did.. the one downside is if you ever need to contact them, the hold time is horrendous.

Indeed hold time is horrendous and also the worst thing is sometimes you may get "this phone number you call is not in service" bs

Normally I don't care much about customer service unless the service sucks and you have to actually call them. But 3web isn't an alternative for Rogers, unfortunately. I called when I was looking for alternatives, and they have a 60Gb cap on the line. When you go over it, they shut off the connection and its an automatic $26 charge that you have to call them for before they'll turn it back on.

Do a search on 3web reviews and you'll stay away.

I cannot say enough bad things about this company, my internet was down for 3 weeks once, they sent me three modems in the mail and kept having my internet shut down because they were switching the mac addresses (or something like that). When I called they denied that they sent three modems and then a few months after I sent them back complained they had not received them.

The list goes on and on and on.

A year after I quit with them I received a call from them saying that my highspeed line was approved and a tech would be at my house between whatever day and whatever day.

The company itself may not be bad, but the people they have working for them may share a braincell.

Rogers just extended my 20% off for high speed, I called & threatened to cancel if they don't extend the same offer  I had the 20% off since last April 2007 & now it's good for next 12 months :D

Try that first but YMMV...

I had 3 web and had a bad experience, however I think its because something happened while I had it, for around 3 months the network was really messed up, they blamed rogers and I would defiantly agree it was around that time people started getting 99.X IP addresses.

Anyways 3web was bad for me because I could never get a hold of them and rogers kept cutting our internet service, finally after a few months they cut us off and no one ever came to fix it. I kept their modem as a fair trade ;)

However I can see people being happy with it, it wasn't a bad service, I just had a bad situation which is bound to happen.

I'd suggest Teksavvy. I'm currently happy with my Rogers Extreme..but then again, you might be looking for a change hoho. I was with 3web, and i'd stay away. I was being billed for what i was supposed to be getting (5mb) but in fact i was getting 200kb. their wait times are way too long (2hours on the line and then hung up on) and when you finally get thru, their advice doesn't help at all (unplug, wait, then replug and reboot). Teksavvy is your best bet, otherwise stick with Rogers.

he mentions that only cable is available in his area. no DSL (teksavvy)

Like people said if you need Tech Service, 3WEB is not a place to go to.

But I'm fine on their DSL service, really not a problem if any during my stay with them. No dropouts etc. But calling them takes long...

Despite all the bad reviews, I bit the bullet and signed up for 3web..

Situation:
1. No land line (only people that called us were telemarketers) so dry-DSL service would cost an extra $9/month
2. Rogers only offered me a 10% discount after my 50% discount for 1 year expired. Felt insulted so I cancelled.
3. Looked into microwave/satellite ISP and they cost more than $60/month. They're meant for people who live in the boonies.

So really, 3web was our only choice.

Here's my experience so far:

The Good:
1. Speed is slightly better than Rogers (not sure if it's because my neighbours are on Rogers).. Getting 70ms latency from WoW vs 130ms when I was with Rogers. Less dying when I PvP. :D
2. They activated my service a week before I requested and didn't charge me. It didn't work because Rogers didn't do their part but it was a nice gesture.
3. Called help desk twice (Rogers issue as above) and got through within 5 minutes both times.
4. They called me to followup to make sure Rogers did what they were supposed to do and that everything was working -- I thought that was nice

The Bad:
1. They charged me $50 for Rogers installation even though they said they wouldn't -- called to reverse this but haven't seen the reversal yet (after 4 days).

My freebie just ended. I just called them up & said "hey, my 20% discount expired & when i calledlast week the rep told me to call this week & someone would extend it for me since we are valued customers" and the CSR rep said "okay i'll extend it for another year"

Post back in 2 weeks see if you're opinion changes...

I signed up with them about 3 weeks ago for Cable. First 1.5 weeks were fine. Lately however, my connection speed slows down randomly to the point where it's almost as bad as dial up.

Call a few times but NEVER get through after being on hold for over 2 hours.

It's been less then a month and I've already cancelled my 3web service and moving to Teksavvy.

I've been using 3Web for several year now like the days when they used to offer free 56K internet access until they raised it to $9.99/month. I used the 3Web 56K internet service for long time until I got DSL.

I'm using the DSL 3Web (uses Bell's line) and I like it so far because of price, it's very good. Although download time isn't as fast as it used to be (when Bell starting capping downloads), it works great.

When I first switched over the charged double the cost and took a lot of calling back and forth for a 4 month period before it got all settled. I ended getting the extra month back, another 3 months fee for that mess. Yes, their customer service is poor with hold times are long and horrible like 1-2 hours.

I'm using 3web for cable internet here in Ottawa and so far I have no complaints. The uptime is good so far. It's pretty comparable to service from Rogers that I switched from. 3web is the only alternative cable internet provider here and I refuse to use DSL because my speeds are ridiculous.

Can any 3web cable users please post some speedtest.net results?

Thanks

I believe it's supposed to be 10mbps but this is what I get during the slowdowns.

Everyday there are pretty much slowdowns like this, even lower sometimes. Can anyone recommend on a company to switch to?

3Web/Cybersurf is 7 megs over cable. You can always switch back to your cable provider, but is the bottleneck with Cybersurf or the cable company caused by traffic shaping.

Is there a bandwidth cap with 3web? I called the CSR a few days ago and they told me it was now 60 GB for Platinum users.

I want to hear more from people who've had 3Web Hi-Speed, especially in Toronto ...

Have you used other net providers? How does this one prepare ...
Any complaints about this one ...
Did they have to come and install the modem or were you able to set everything up for yourself at home?

I have my own modem, couldn't I "rent" a modem in the beginning, then tell them I don't need it anymore since I bought one ...
Or maybe you have to outright buy the one they want you to have the first time around ...

Info is appreciated!

I've tried Bell, Primus, AEI, and Rogers before switching to 3web.

I was able to install the modem and everything myself BUT Rogers still sent a technician and charged me $50!

If you have your own modem, don't rent. They charge you $23 for shipping so it's not worth it. I rented mine for the first month while I was trying out their service and just bought it.

So far, it's been great. My 1 month just came up and Rogers surprised me by snipping my line (supposedly, their systems aren't linked so they saw that I canceled last month so they came to snip my line even though I had switched to 3web).

So, my only complaint is Rogers messing around with me -- first sending a technician even though I didn't need one and then snipping my line.

Rogers came because you had Rogers previously? Or Rogers came for 3Web?
Thanks for the info though, greatly appreciated.

I was with Rogers when I learned about 3Web from RFD. I bought a used modem through Ebay (a model that 3web had listed as acceptable).
Signed up, given an activation date, and just swapped the modems on that date. Service was active on the used modem and I returned the Rogers supplied modem.

Speed is 7 megs in Mississauga. Been about 2.5 years, and had minor outages 2 or 3 times related to Rogers resegmenting.

You were able to set this up in your own home over the phone / instructions or did someone have to come out and assist in this?
I really just want to do it myself (long story) ... so I'm curious how it got activated.

All you need is to hook up the modem to the cable.. As long as Rogers does their part, there's not much you need to do..

Yeah see, Rogers has never done "Their Part" at my house so I don't want them to begin to either ... that's what I'm trying to avoid.
So I guess they gotta come in to set up something, what I have no idea ...

Yes, in my case, it was as simple as changing cable modems. Rogers had run a new cable line for cable internet back in 1997. There was no need for anyone to make a service call, and I did not want them to do so either.

I had to provide 3web with the cable modem's serial number and mac address. They forward that to Rogers who activates it on their network. The used modem I purchased from the the southern US, so no possibility of it being blacklisted as one of Rogers not returned modems.
