Does anyone know if it's possible to get Quark in Toronto?

Quark is a dairy product popular in Europe. Made from curds, I think.
I guess a cross between yogurt and cottage cheese might be one way to describe it.

if it's possible to get Quark in Toronto? Yes and no. No, I haven't seen proper "quark" in Toronto (although you may want to check couple of bigger East European food stores, like IDF or Yummy Market, they may have it but price will make your incestines curl). Yes, you can do pretty good imitation yourself by buying "tvorog" or "baking cheese" in any big supermarket (Western Creamery being my fav) and mixing it with a bit of Kefir, Maslyanka or plain yoghurt. Quark is unpressed "baking cheese", so you kinda reverse-engineer it this way. It would not taste 100% like real deal, but pretty damn close.

made by Western Creamery of Brampton, distributed by Liberté Natural Foods - which means your best bet of finding it should be able at a Longo's, Loblaws, Sobeys, Walmart SuperStore, Sams Club, Costco, or Whole Foods (in Oakville & on Avenue Road in Toronto). If you don't want to waste time driving around looking for a store that has it, I would suggest phoning Liberté's 1-800-265-3230 number and asking if perhaps their Sales dept can tell you which specific vendors currently carry the product.

Additionally, quark(not necessarily Western Creamery's) can be found in many German, Polish and Hungarian delis. I have it on good authority that Daiter's Deli just north of Bathurst/Lawrence sells their own.

I could have sworn that maybe 10-15 years ago there was a product, either Minigo or Petit Danone, that launched with an advertising campaign featuring people/characters/a voice-over asking "What is quark?!". Both of those dessert products (Petit Danone has now been renamed to 'Petit Danimals') currently only say that they are made with 'fresh cheese', but nowhere to be found is any mention of 'quark'.

As far as I'm concerned, fromage frais = quark, though it/they can vary greatly depending on the amount of cream blended into them and their resulting fat content.

I'm actually interested in quark as it's a dairy product with high protein (which I'm looking for right now). My cousin is German, and he says it tastes great which is another reason I'm looking for it. I'll probably look into Liberte's offerings.

Looking online at the nutritional info for that Baker's Secret stuff, it's extremely high per 100g:

However, I believe most of its moisture has been removed (apparently it's "pressed"), so when you have a 100g of 'yogurt-thickness' quark, it will not be so high. I believe quark is typically in the range of 11-15g of protein per 100g.

I don't know how much quark/Baker's Special usually goes for here (in Europe it's fairly cheap). You may find it's not the most cost-effective dairy source of protein. Having said that, it may well be the tastiest!

Try Brandt's in Mississauga. They have it packed in wax paper, just like home.

Yummm with some canned mandarins folded into it...super yummmm!!

I've seen the Liberty quark at Brandt's and at Highland Farms as well
