Do you ever eat this when you are well? What's in theses dishes becasue they don't look very appetizing - just lots of red onion in the one on the right.

chao = congee
it's made with chicken, chicken broth and broken rice (that is slightly fried dry on a pan for taste), in a soup then cilantro and green onion are added on top. At least this is how my family makes it (yes I'm vietnamese.)
goi ga = chicken coleslaw. The goi ga in that picture does not do the dish any justice at all.
goi ga should be with shredded pieces of chicken, thinly sliced cabbage, a bit of onion thinly sliced, and mint/basil/cilantro depending on taste, broken peanuts on top. For sauce, it's fish sauce, chopped garlic, lemon and sugar mixed together, add some chili and mix.

Just tell them it's Vietnamese porridge, which is what it basically is.
I can't stand the stuff, personally. My mom tried to force-feed it to me when I was a kid and I hated it. I think it looks like vomit. Haven't touched it since.
