Are ppl seeing a rise in prises?
Is this just an excuse for loblaws to charge more???
I know there is a thread about rice prices but how about other grains; rye? oats? barley?? how do you find out about these prices? Is there a food that isnt going up in price? potatoes??
Suddenly this Food/drink category is gonna become really relevant to RDF users.

Grain prices can all be checked on the commodity markets. Things like imported produce will rise due to gas prices. Ontario produce will probably also rise due to the frost and/or hard freeze the last couple of nights along with rising energy costs. Shortages and increased prices of barley and hops is going to push the price of beer up along wih gas costs.

Min wage went up .75 cents in Ontario. Cashiers and people who work in these stores are charged min wage. If the wage goes up, costs for the store go up, and so do prices. What can you do, we live in inflationary times. If you haven't noticed Tim Hortons started charging more too.

Gas prices have gone up 30%. Everything dependent on transportation will rise. Plus, as far as food is concerned, if they start using corn and grains to make ethanol, well, the remaining corn will be higher priced and you would be surprised how much corn and corn byproducts are in our daily lives. Food will be way more.
Strangely enough, somehow the Government says the inflation rate is low (about 1.7%). I am sure my food, housing, gas and most other things I buy have been way higher than that. The Government inflation basket must have changed.

I believe Stella Artois and Becks will be increasing their prices due to the gas price/grain price increase.

Last time I went to Dominion or T&T (yesterday) there were skids upon skids of rice.
There is not a shortage of rice...don't get confused. The problem is the cost has increased for the vendors caused by demand for petroleum and ethanol (corn).

Tell me about it.... I used to buy flour on sale for $5 for 8kg. Regular price hovered around $1 per kg. Now you'll be hard pressed to find the 8kg bag cheaper than $16-20.
It costs me $2000 more this year than it did last year based on increased food prices and increase fuel costs.

Well shortage is because people are hoarding as well. If they are not making as much then its a shortage compared to regular consumption. I didn't see it coming as I have been focused on work. A regular 8 kg bag of long grain rice of rooster brand used to cost me $8 for a 8 kg bag or $16 for 16kg bag. I found a 2 kg bag for $4.99 and I cannot find this brand anymore in the larger bags. I have bought another brand of long grain rice 8kg bag for $18 at asian stores only. Regular stores such as fortino's and price choppers have very little bags of rice now. There are differences in quality of rice. You can get generic bags for $6.99 but if you look at the grains you can see the difference.
