I have rented cars from Hertz, enterprise and thrifty. The prices I got from online reservation are the final price. They never add some additional fee to my reservation. I tried advantage in Montreal because of their "online" price and location (near the airport). I got a small car for 3 days for $50 including VLF, Prime location fee and taxes. When I was picking up the car, they told me I have to pay $95 for the rental because there is liability insurance ($7.95 per day) I have to buy. WTF!
I was planning to go out with some friends, so I didn't have time to look for another place. But I'm sure I can get the same car from enterprise with max $60.
I can't find anything about the price of liability insurance on their website. And for other rental companies, I think this insurance is already included in the base rate. So that's why I never got charged with other companies.
Anyone has the same experiences?
PS: their service is horrible. I'll never rental car from them, no matter how cheap their car is.

I could be wrong, but I do think all rental agencies has liability on their cars
And renters can buy (optional) collision damage insurance (CDW), which may get covered by credit cards
And if there's liability, your car insurance policy will be effective as well
AFAIK, my car insurance policy goes with me if I rent a car - I just can't drive my car & rental car at the same time :D

I believe that is correct. You are not required to purchase any addition insurance on a rental vehicle. At least, that's how it is in Ontario.
Quebec, as we know, is generally an entirely different kettle of poisson.

Sorry to break it to you, but no rental agency includes CDW into their pricing.
At the same time, Enterprise charges $19.99 just for the CDW, then you have the optional $2.00 charge if you want to be completely covered (ie. you dont pay the deductable).
Next time, it is wise to read up on policies before you make such a complaint ;)

The car you are renting, MUST be insured one way or another.
If you don't have your own insurance, you have 2 options;
- purchase insurance from the rental house
- use a gold/patinum CC that has CDW included (provided you have such a CC)
OR
If you have your own insurance policy, you can use that, in which case, any claim will go through your insurance company.
Otherwise, no rental house will allow you to rent a car without one of the above options.

There are two insurance. The one I am talking about is third parity liability. I have my Gold visa card covered the CDW. But I still got charged with third parity liability which is 7.98 per day with advantage car rental. I never got charged this insurance with other company.

The policy on their website says:
Entry into Canada allowed from our Washington state locations only. Renter must be able to provide proof of liability of not less than $300,000 USD before entering Canada. If renter does not have liability insurance of at least this amount, the purchase of Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) is mandatory. Travel allowed in British Columbia and Alberta only.
That clause is for entry into Canada from the US, but the proof of $300,000+ liability may apply to rentals within Canada too...that's probably where they snagged you.
