View Full Version : Recommend Me a Fine Cuban Cigar

I've had Guantanamera's before...they were *alright* but not really as good as I thought they would be.
I don't smoke cigars often, but I'm looking to pick a few up over the course of the new week or so.
Anyway, recommendations?

There is a cigar store in Unionville's Main Street, as well at Bayview and York Mills near the TD Bank. From what I hear, they have good cigar choices and service.

What's your budget for the cigars? even cubans range from the moderate($5-10) to the ultra expensive($30+) per cigar.
Some good moderates:
Monte Cristo #3
Bolivar Corona
Punch Punch
the $$$
Cohiba's are typically very $$$
Romeo y Julieta Churchhills
In general the smaller corona size cigars will be cheaper than the bigger size ones and torpedos.

Much appreciated. I've heard good things about the Monte Cristo's and the Romeo y Julieta, but due to cost I didn't want to just buy one and find out they were, in fact, garbage ;)
There's a cigar shop down the road from where I work...I'll probably stop by there sometime next week and pick up a few Monte Cristo.
Thanks.
Any other suggestions?

Of what relevance is this to food and drink? Indeed, cigar smoke would obliterate the taste -- and aroma -- of any food.

Partagas Serie D no.4 with a good glass of port. Nice mellow cuban smoke.

I vouch for the romeo & J one. Quality cigar with a good taste.
The cohiba is more expensive and stronger as well, if this is your first time, I advise not getting the cohiba. It can make you a bit light headed if it is your first.

Spirit de Cuba from the Havana Tobacconist at Vaughn Mills.
Nice, mellow, good with everything and inexpensive (relatively - about 8$)
Last time I went in there to get 4, they only had 2 so the guy gave me 2 others he said was close at the same price -at 30$ each....still would prefer the 8$ ones though.

Here's a man who knows what he's talking about (although didn't unclude Monte Cristo #4 on the list which IMO is a good balance of price and quality compared to the #3).
Cohiba's IMO aren't worth the premium. It's a pretty subjective subject though, so it would be easy to argue the subject either way.

People enjoy cigars like fine wine and cognac.
The people that enjoy cigars usually enjoy fine cognac to the same extent. People get into detail as to the taste, aroma, style of certain cigars. They get into details much like people who are into wine or cognac tasting.
The cigars are the taste in it self and many enjoy it with a drink.
I had a Monte Cristo the other day. It was alright! I kicked it back with some remy martin XO.
to OP: do you enjoy your cigars with congac or brandy? If not.. you should try it.
edit:
Holy moly.. I didnt realize so many people mentioned MOnte cristo's... I guess its popular

If I drink when I smoke cigars (again, not often, maybe one every few months or so) I usually have it with a glass of single-malt scotch whiskey.
I may have to try it with cognac or brandy sometime though. My aunt's father (not related to me) is a big cigar smoker and he often has his cigars with cognac or brandy. He seems to really like mixing it up a bit.

Well Ma_Jie, where would you suggest that I post my subject thread then? I think (and I believe many here would agree with me) that the discussion of cigars is much more related to Food/Drink rather than Off-Topic. Considering everyone else has offered suggestions and recommendations for me in this thread without resorting to "OMG Wrong Section Reported!!!11!ONE" means that I think I posted it in the right place.

Octavius: The Off Topic is the appropriate forum for this as it doesn't fit well into any of the other forums (unless, of course, there was, say, a hobby forum).
The reason why people have not objected should be quite obvious. Look at what the food forum has become: it is littered with posts about McDonalds-caused illness and whiny Subway rants while proper threads, like the one on kives, get neglected and bumped down. Too many people use the food forum as their own personal blog, and I don't believe that's what it intended to be.

Fair enough. I still maintain this is the right spot for my topic though =P
No disrespect to you (and none intended in my previous post either). If this topic truly should be in the off-topic section, then I'm sure one of the mods will move it. Otherwise, I guess it'll end up staying here ;)

I say its definitely more fitting for food and drink. Its within that same type of crowd.
The people who truly enjoy food and drink in great detail, have the very same characteristics as people who enjoy cigars.
They all look for similar characteristics...

This is the right section..
Many upscale steakhouses and restaurants in fact have Cigar Bars in them
Just last weekend I was in Montreal and ate at La Queue de Cheval, a popular steakhouse, and it had a "Cigar Bar" there.. Specifically no cigarettes but fine cigars and wines only
