5 hour energy, lemon/lime flavour

Most energy, no crash afterwards. If I could only find it in a pill form I'd be in love.

Sobe's ARush tastes the best, kinda like sparkling grapefruit juice. Full Throttle (citrus) is OK as well.

I find the other ones like Rockstar, Red Bull, etc. have that energy drink after-taste to them. Citrus flavors mask that really well, makes it taste like normal pop.

By Far GURU is the best energy drink. They just released 6 new styles/flavours. All 355ml 4 of them are non carbonated, 2 are. 1 is a light version with only 5 calories.

They are ALL delicious and can be found in almost all convenience stores. Every extreme fitness carries them, and most other gyms for that matter.

Best of all, they are ORGANIC, and have no caffeine and no Tourine. They are made up of only natural organic ingredients, and ginseng, gingko biloba, echinecia, and guarana.

My personal favorite is the Juicy Superfruit, Tangerine, and Lemonade.

Energy without a crash!

Actually, their main ingredient is Guarana, which is the chemical equivalent of caffeine, and produces the exact effects, including the increased heart rate/BP, decreased appetite, jitters, "crash", etc.

The mistake many people make is that organic or natural would be better for you... which is not true because cocaine is all natural as well, yet we all know what'd happen if we put that in energy drinks!

I'm just saying energy drinks are bad for you, we shouldn't try to delude ourselves into thinking otherwise  GURU does look tasty though, I'm going to try one next time!

Jolt Energy Blue, but I don't have it too often. It's expensive and over carbonated to all hell.

My "regular" energy that I have once a week is Rockstar Juiced Pomegranate.

My best friend loves 5 hour energy - go figure, he's in law school. One thing that AMP Energy has done that other's haven't is create these personalized flavor tests on their site -

Sobe adrenaline rush! I was quite surprised by the taste, really good.
As for its power, disappointing to say the least. Felt a slight difference in energy that lasted around 40 minutes i guess ( comparing this to drinking redbull when i was sick-so there was a huge difference in energy - good for 5hrs)

Any other recommendations?

Kind of an acquired taste. I used to not care for them.
I'll got the bar and have like 10 rebull and vodka and don't feel energized.
Rebull on it's own does nothing for me either.
Ephedrine doesn't really do anything for me either.
I might try this five hour energy since a few here mentioned it. Where to get it from?

Wow, you guys like shelling out big coin for energy huh? ;)

Big glass of water, 200-300mg caffeine and 8-24mg Ephedra and you're good to go.

200mgx100 tabs Caffeine is ~ 6 bucks
8mgx50tabs Ephedra is ~ 5 bucks
Water is usually "included" or free. Just drink lots of it.

Sure, it's not fancy like Red Bull etc ... but it's effective and much cheaper.

Disclaimer: i'm not advocating this stuff ... but if you are already taking stimulants and have no cardiac issues etc ... there are cheaper ways to "stay awake"

I thought they pulled ephedra off the market because its effects were stronger than that of epenephrine.

Staying on subject: dont have a particular favourite, they all go well with jagermeister.

They also don't work on me that well as I've been known to still fall asleep after consuming them.

.

It can still be sold for it's original use which was for sinus congestion. You can buy it at Popeye's.

I take it occasionally. The main problem is people were taking like 50 mg of it stacked with 250 mg of caffeinne tabs (along with other insane combos). Then working out! Some of the weight loss supplements had up to 150 mg of it from what I read, which is ridiculous. The recommended dose is 8 mg, and if you take that much it will give you an energy boost on it's own. More than an energy drink will.

My main energy drink is just green or white tea though. And I also take Vege-Greens. No energy drink I have tried has worked as well as those. Vege-Greens seem expensive, but when you compare the price per serving it's much less than energy drinks.

NRG 8 hour shot is the best energy shot by far! I totally love their flavours. They have a web deal on right now, for about $1.69 per bottle compared to $3.49 at shoppers and walmart.

www.nrgshot.com

Red is probably my favorite flavour, then Orange and pink. Blue is great when frozen. I saw them this weekend giving out pink nrg at the Stouffville hospital. Their pink flavour is totally endorsed by the Look Good Feel Better program, helping women out with cancer. And every sale of pink is donated to this cause. Now thats an amazing thing for an energy drink to do!

I totally agree with you on the Guarana thing, but not so much on the Organic thing.. I was in a health food store today, and we were examining the ingredients in the new 355ml GURU cans, I was kinda shocked at the sugar content, but he told me that Natural Cane sugar is vastly differnt to processed sugar. Apparently the new ones are also filled with antioxidants. So, in comparison to the other drinks out there that are filled with chemicals, I will deffinitely continue getting this one.. I also found out that they are cheaper if you get them from their site (and you can get mixed cases with $0 delivery charge). This is an awesome deal, and not a bad looking site either, kinda enjoyed the videos

p.s. My favourite is superfruit - DELISH, and I like the non-carbonated factor to it

EDIT**
Since posting this, I saw that both Kanye West, and Madonna are lovin' this drink.. judging by the fact that I love 4 of the 6 flavours, i totally see why (although Kanye seems to dig the one that I don't)

Staying on subject: dont have a particular favourite, they all go well with jagermeister.

They also don't work on me that well as I've been known to still fall asleep after consuming them.

They didn't pull it off the market ... they just changed the rules a bit to prevent people from doing stupid things like overdosing on ephedra while doing the ECA stack.

As tdu was saying, people were taking far higher amounts of ephedra than recommended. Typically with the ECA stack it would be ~ 200mg caffeine, 25mg Ephedra and 325mg Aspirin although the 325mg aspirin was considered by some people as being excessive. Whatever.

Usually people would take this stack 2/3x day in 4 hour intervals.

Anyways, about 7-8 years ago 25mg tabs of Ephedra were outlawed in Canada (not sure about States, probably not) and the dosages were decreased to the present 8mg tabs. Of course, companies loved this because it increased their profits (IMO) since 100 tabs of 25mg Ephedra was ~ 11-12 bucks iirc. Now, 100 x 8mg tabs is ~ 5-6 dollars. Triple those amounts to get close to 25mg is now significantly more ... meaning more potential profit balanced out by more packaging cost etc. I think that the overall effect was relatively minimal because you can just take 3x8mg tab to make 24mg instead. Wow, that was hard to figure out. More annoyance and posturing than anything.

I caution anyone before attempting to use Ephedra, especially if you suspect you have a familial Hx of hypertension, cardiac issues and so forth. Not good and not something to take lightly.

I know someone who tried a small amount of Ephedra for "weight loss" and while she was on the treadmill at the gym she went tachycardic (extremely high heartbeats per min) which would not subside and had to go to emerg via ambulance and they found a predisposition to cardiac arrythmia. Coincidence? Maybe, probably not though.

In any case, this is the wiki page for ECA just FYI, that's all.

Ya I definitely didn't mean to come across that I was recommending it. In my case I am young and keep up with my physicals etc. I have no blood pressure issues, or history of it in my family. And I take it sparingly.

I think this thing about 'organic' ingredients in these drinks is kind of silly. I doubt any extensive research has been done to find out exactly how all these ingredients react, or what taking massive doses of them will do. Organic or not. You run into the same problem with the energy drinks, where you get some people who decide to take 10 times the recommended dose. It happens with everything. I worked with a guy who drank 2 1L bottles of Coke a day. And one of them counted as his 'breakfast'.

I also don't really follow that 'cane sugar' comment that was said to someone. A very large dose of sugar is a very large dose of sugar. Even if it's fructose etc. Again, if you are drinking 3-4 cans a day, you are getting a lot of sugar. Cane or not.

I'm going to be an ass for a bit here but I can't help stating this because I'm a life science student. I'm going to keep this as simple as I can. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong

1. processed sugars and cane sugars are all carbohydrates. Chemically there is NO difference between the two. They will be broken into monocharbohydrates, converted to glucose and used as energy (ignoring the other pathways for the sake of argument). One type of sugar is not better than the other.

side note: fructose gets broken down into glucose and galactose in the body. the galactose will then be transformed into glucose so the body can use it. Basically 1 fructose molecule will give you 2 glucose molecules for your body to use.

The only type of sugar that's 'different' would be the type that your body cannot break down and use, such as 'aspartame'. Aspartame triggers the sweet receptors in your tongue (telling your brain what you are tasting is sweet), but since it cannot be converted into a usable form, you end up not getting any sugar in your system.

2. Antioxidants - YES they are beneficial, but this term is thrown around so often to attract people in the 'health craze' it makes me sick (no pun intended). Antioxidants helps remove the build up of oxidative chemicals that can potentially damage the cells in your body by reacting with the oxidative chemicals themselves. And you know what's a common antioxidant? Vitamin C. So go eat an orange if you want more antioxidants.

3. I hate the term organic. Just because something is collected from a plant or made in a lab does not change it's chemical properties. Your body will process them in the exact same fashion. Do not assume the term 'organic' as healthy or nutritious.

The list goes on but i'll stop because I'm about to get Flamed

The first point is correct in a way. But refined/processed sugars are different. When they are refined, nutrients fibers and water are usually stripped away (usually to increase taste and shelf life), taking away nutritional value and concentrating the sugar. So these refined sugars are metabolized much quicker and will raise blood sugar levels quicker not to mention you are getting way less nutritional value. So yes the sugar chains themselves are chemically the same, but what comes along with the sugars is not which does make a difference. Even when you talk about the exact same type of food, like potatoes (so looking at the exact same sugar), depending on how you cook it will make a difference on how fast your body metabolizes the sugars. So while the potato (sugar) itself is the same, something as simple as how its cooked will effect how your body utilizes the sugars.

second point. Yup agree with you there, it sounds really cool and healthy so every company jumps at the chance to include that with products. But it is a great excuse to have a nice glass of wine a day.

third point. agree that organic is thrown around to much and to much is assumed about how much better it is for you. that being said, i have no problem if people want to spend more money on organic foods if it makes them feel good about themselves, I would guess it probably is better for the environment at least.

Notice that most if not all the prices are similar/same.

Once in awhile i'll order some greens for the wife and get over the 99 dollar threshold and get included shipping. Don't forget to ask for nicely if they have any freebie/promo tshirts and some samples. Typically, they have lots of samples to give out with orders.

Taste wise I like Full Throttle Blue

Value wise you can't beat Red Rain. It's $3.99 for a 4-pack at No Frills and it works decently. I'm not very sensitive to energy drinks so I don't notice a difference between the $1 red-rain vs a $3 red bull. The taste is sort of like a cream-soda with slight "medicinal" taste. The aftertaste is very similar to honey, at least in my opinion.

It gives an instant boost of energy and it keeps me going for hours.

Full throttle
Red rain
Red Bull
Rockstar roasted (coffee flavoured energy drink)
Nos (if anyone has tried this... its totally loaded with caffeine... like 3x that of the reg sized red bull)

I should warn people before drinking those proprietary drinks ... as they get around specifying exactly how much caffeine they have because they get away with naming "proprietary blends" ...

which means they can stuff 400mg or more of caffeine in a 375ml bottle (more than an ex large cup of coffee, way more) without having to actually print that.

So, if you have some sensitivity to stimulants ... you can get a huge caffeine rush/crash from that stuff ... not to mention they are usually very expensive.

If you're going to go all out for stimulation you might as well spend 6 bucks for a bottle of caffeine pills and go to town that way.

I've been using 5-Hour Energy lately... tastes like crap (it comes in concentrated 59mL bottles) but it gets the job done well. Doesn't make you want to go pee, and keeps you awake without causing that "buzz" feeling

I'm really liking NOS. To be honest I just bought it because the bottle looked pretty cool, but it turned out to be really tasty. Yum yum. Doesn't seem to give me jitters either, just a really good long-lasting pick-me-up.

your very nutritionally educated!! Also going back to the original "GURU" post... After reading all your (broader members) energy drink preferences, and trying many of them, I think I am sticking with the guru.. You just can't beat the energy and taste combination.

So.. I want to add something to this whole nutritional twist that this thread has brought about.. Taurine. Being as though I don't have the same nutrional insight as you do, I will quote bits of what I have read..

"There are no conclusive, intensive studies on the combined effect of taurine and caffeine on humans. As a result, energy drinks such as Red Bull have been banned in Norway, Denmark, Uruguay, and France. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_bull)"

"For instance, one can of Red Bull contains 1000 mg of taurine. A German double-blind study compared a taurine and caffeine drink, a caffeine-only drink, and a placebo drink. Stroke volume--the volume of blood ejected with each beat of the heart--was increased only in the group taking the taurine-and-caffeine drink. Taurine appears to play an important role in muscle contraction (especially in the heart) and the nervous system."- ask.com

"Taurine is an amino acid. This means it's something your body already has and needs . But regularly consuming things with too much taurine may train your body not to naturally produce it. So you can become dependent on it as well." <-- this is something I very much believe in, and suggest everyone watches the movie "WHAT THE BLEEP DO YOU KNOW"

So, while Taurine is essential, and produced naturally, consumption may hinder the body's ability to reproduce it, not to mention the fact that there are so many inconclusive studies regarding the synergistic effect of taurine and caffeine together.

I hope I made sense. Feel free to critique any errors.

This energy drink from thailand it's extremely high in sugar but scores high in the Yummy scale. If you don't know what I'm talking about it's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krating_Daeng. I drink it alot when I'm travelling in Vietnam where it's hot and humid and I need a real energy boost.

I usually tend to just stick with Redbull. Sometimes I'll buy some Bawls though. A lot of the time I just drink fresh black tea though, does the job nearly as well and has lots of good anti oxidants :).

This is the stuff that red bull was developed from. A german guy came to Thailand and tried it and figured he could sell it so he went into business with the Thai guy that invented it and they are both billionaires now. It is sweet but I like it since it isn't carbonated. It is similar to the M150 that someone else mentioned and it is very cheap here in Thailand.

Sobe's ARush tastes the best, kinda like sparkling grapefruit juice. Full Throttle (citrus) is OK as well.

I find the other ones like Rockstar, Red Bull, etc. have that energy drink after-taste to them. Citrus flavors mask that really well, makes it taste like normal pop.
glad i tried Sobe first.... it tastes great!

i've been hearing horror stories about how some other brands taste like chemical water... good thing i picked Sobe first

the rockstar coffee flavoured ones are good.

monster also has a coffee flavour line...Java Monster. they're not bad,but they are much sweeter than the rockstar versions (they are currently 2 for $4 at petrocanada gas stations, along with AMP energy drinks)

I tried Guru and my heart rate spiked to a bad spot. Tasted like Pineapple Juice loaded with sugar.

Well it was because I hadn't eaten...

I tried that heart rate thing at shoppers and I was 160 over 98 or something like that...everything was moving in slow motion :P...

I had the Superfruit one. Odd flavour, but was decent. One plus is it's non carbonated.

Yes, that's serious hypertension right there. Although, if you're young you can "handle it" to some degree ... but that would be major cause for concern in a hospital situation.

Which is why I shouldn't drink these damn things!

LoL the symptoms I experience when I don't eat before them is (some extreme): Jitters, Nausea, Dizziness, Slow Motion*, Heart Rate Spikes (can feel it bouncing outta my chest)

* Actually a horror story of sorts was last year for St. Patty's Day I tried a 4 Pack of REV (look it up, pre-mixed energy drink/alcohol). Wrong move. Was told by my, now fiancee's, friend that it has no effect and you can just drink them like that. So I pre-drank one before the party. At the party I drank the other 3 (don't ask but I was under the impression the energy part was small and more or less just liquor). Boy was I wrong. After that I still didn't feel anything major although I wasn't tired anymore.

So anyway I continued to have about 2-3 vex's (wussy drink I know, and now since than I can't touch the stuff). I started to feel really dizzy. I couldn't stand, was like an advanced drunk. I could see everyone was moving in literal slow motion, it was a kinda surreal feeling. Everyone I talk to says I was moving at the speed of light.

Anyway I ended up standing outside for what felt like a minute to catch my breath. I was later told I was out there for close to 2 hours (it was pretty cold with no jacket on; in an apartment building). Anyway I ended up throwing up (as people could tell by my story). They brought me inside cuz I was mumbling that I was cold. They had me lying down and i couldn't stop shaking. Not so much out of cold but just horrible body shakes. They had hair dryers on me and everything to get me to heat up.

My, now fiancee, was bawling her eyes out thinking I was seizuring and dying. Everyone was all around crying. Ambulance was called. I remember them coming in and helping me up but i told them I could walk (rather I stumbled) to their cart. I don't remember anything until I was in the ambulance and than it goes blank until I arrive in the hospital.

They kept me overnight for observations. I can't quite remember the exact numbers but i have a heart printout thing. The person says my heart was quite close to just stopping period. It was being so overworked that they thought I could have potential long term problems. I was basically bed ridden for about 3 days and was told if I had chest pains to go back immediately.

So yeah sorry for the essay. But it's something to remind your kids and stuff. There has been warnings about redbull/vodka but what most parents don't realize is this stuff is being sold at LCBO pre-mixed. This is a pretty extreme case but now I know I will never touch that pre-mixed crap again no matter how "cool" people think it might be.

way long but vex is amazingg!!

I used to drink vex when I first started drinking. Now I find it way too sweet.

I have drank on a regular basis about 4 cans of redbull at a time, and it tends to have little effect on me, other than the next morning. It seems the caffiene has some sort of delayed reaction on my sometimes. Thena again, I basically only drink energy drinks with Alcohol (usually jager bombs), but I can go to sleep just fine if I want to. The problem is I am totally awake and aware the next morning at like 7am, even if I only went to bed at 4am. I am still exhausted, but just can't sleep.

There was one time I had 3.5 cans of rockstar, and I didn't feel well. I was shaking like crazy (I'm a little shakey to begin with), and I could feel my heart pounding. I could get my pulse without even touching anything. The next 2-3 days, my heart just didn't feel right. I can't even describe it, it just didn't feel like it should. I haven't had that much again since, and I try to limit myself to 3 cans of redbull or 2 rockstar at a time tops.

LoL yeah sorry for the lengthy post.

I haven't had vex in awhile but it was good. Nowadays vodka doesn't sit well in my stomach. I've completely parted from my younger favorite (grape smirnoff). I found it used to taste like grape nerds and now tastes like rubbing alcohol. I stick with rum. Anything rum is good in my books.

I had a Monster M-80 today, its the yellow can, a mixture of energy+juice.

I would say that this is one of the better tasting energy drinks out there. Tastes nothing like an energy drink.
