Is a Costco membership worth if for a couple?

We already throw out a lot of food... & we don't like eating the same thing over again.

For us it's not just about the food.

The clothes, books, office supplies, cleaning supplies are all worth it. If you are local to a Costco, then I'd say it's worth it. If you are driving more than 45 minutes each way to get to one.....nope.

its different for everyone.

my husband and i have a membership for just the two of us. its not a matter of eating too much of the same thing, but meats for instance its the quality. i wont buy meat in other stores, it just doesnt compare.
foodsavers are great for buying extras and freezing. and cheese is a way better price at costco, even tho its big, i cut it in 1/2 or 1/3's and vacuum seal.

i just picked up some sandwich meat on sale, i vacuum seal that in smaller portions and freeze, it thaws like fresh. but theres no way we could eat that much sandwich meat if we didnt do the vacuum seal.

and keep in mind they do sell much more than just food.

its a once a week stop for us :)

Costco has everything under one roof, I love costco. I'm a regular costco shopper, the food at their bakery section are very fresh, and their vegetable and meat are good quality as well. I personally prefer costco than any other grocery stores.

+ 1 for all the comments above!

I especially love their ribeye steak, cocktail shrimp, salmon steak, and bagged salad. They have this really good salad (i forgot the kind) for less than $4. Some of their food are not as cheap as some grocery stores but their quality are great! I hardly buy their pastries coz I really can't finish it with only 2 of us. I also love their selections and price of books and linens such as throws!

I also have to agree that Costco rocks. I find alot of neat and unique things at costco from the salt and pepper grinders to awesome steak and beef. I also love the montreal smoke meat from the food place.

I'm hungry now

I remembered sampling the grand tropical too. I recently sampled a mashed potatoe with the minced fresh garlic at their new location in Richmond Hill. Anyone know does all locations sell those garlic? They seems to be really convenient.

i believe so, they sell it in the BC stores. they are cheap too, $3-$4 for a big container.. its in with the spices.

personally i find that it doesnt really have that intense garlic taste that you get from a fresh clove.

It's worth it for us just for the cheap oil change and free tire rotation/balancing (on tires you buy there).

But since this is the food and drink forum, we also buy things like coffee, milk and eggs there. For some things like spices it's great as well since a container will last months.

Had a membership for 1 year with the intention of buying a TV from them until I found out they speced their own set to most companies including Pioneer and Sony. I couldn't stand the 15-30 minute checkouts. If you buy in bulk, it's a pretty good place but the prices aren't as great as some would make out. They refunded my membership because I went there about 20 times but only used it twice. Definitely get a guest pass and see what the lineups are like before you comit.

I bought mine more than 2 years ago for an SD memory card for my camera (which was not only more expensive but hard to find elsewhere THEN). I also thought about getting a Viewsonic LCD TV, but that is yet to materialize.

But 1 thing that I don't understand is, why are people lining up with TONS of goods WHEN my wife and I can't even find 1 single item (esp. food) over our 20+ trips there. (The only other things we bought in the last 2 years are a DVD movie box set, and a cooked, ready-to-eat whole chicken which did NOT taste any better than those at Loblaws).

I promise, I will buy the TV in the next 12 months, so I won't have to buy another Costco membership next year. :D

May be because you don't like big volume. As others said, its food has better quality in general. Every weekend, I would buy a pack of chicken wing. I then can separate them to 3 packs at home. I usually also buy a bag of 2% milk, a carton of soya bean milk and a pack of veggie. I found that they are cheaper and better than NoFrills. Since there is a costco close to me, I usually just buy a few items each time. No need to stock stuff up unless it is on-sale.

I have not bought much big ticket item from them.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Cost-co has sales?! Do they put out a flyer? I thought they don't have sales -isn't it mostly fixed price and the only prices lowered are on clearance items?

They have coupons/sales almost every week. If you go to Hot Deals forum and search either 'Costco West' or 'Costco East' (coupons/sales vary depending on location) you can see what the coupons/sales are for each week. We have members who post whats on for the current week.

Last November we bought new tires, and a week or two later they went on sale, $60 off. They mailed out gift cards in the value of $60 to everyone who purchased and missed the sale. How can you beat service like that???

The tire manager gave me cash back for the $11 installation fee * 4 because costco.ca messed sent 1 tire the wrong size. Pretty good service ...
