Taxes are pretty reasonable. I just priced a round-trip fare from Toronto to NY and it was $250 after taxes and fees.

The exact same taxes that every other airline charges.
Apart from that, once you chose a date, select the flight you'd like to take, click the class you'd like to fly in, and click "i agree" & continue at the bottom of the page. The next page will show you the total price in a bar to the left.

Welcome to flying post 2001 :(
Taxes and fees are always crazy. Sadly you pay about the same amount in fees for a $100 ticket or a $1000 ticket, so on cheapie flights, the "taxes" seem high, even though most of it is BS fees. Yay 4 different security taxes!

I thought airport fees were determined by airports and therefore would be different for each airport,
and applied on the same basis to ALL airlines using THAT airport.
...but I HAVE been wrong before!

flew to Newark in early april. $95 single way. very nice price. tax plus fees were $100 though.
Still, porter provided much much better service than air canada. as long as I go to NYC there is no way to fly with air canada.
funny thing is, on the door in the man's room in waiting area, somebody wrote "Fxxx AC, go porter". :cheesygri

Mid June, Monday-Saturday:
Jetblue BUF-JFK, $89.50 US each way including taxes! (taxes are 5.51 USD Federal Tax, 3.50 USD Segment Tax, 2.50 USD Security Fee, 4.50 Passenger Facility Charge - total 16.01 USD!)
Most Jetblue flights have leather seats, seatback DirectTV LCDs with free cheapo headsets, or you can buy a good quality headset for $1 USD to keep.
Plus Buffalo airport rocks! - curbside bag check-in (no carting your bags through customs!) - on-airport long-term parking that is 50% cheaper than Pearson off-airport park&fly! Faster lines for families for security checks - even a gate set up as a play area for the kids.
If I can avoid it, I'll never fly Pearson again.

No the island airport does not have the prescreening customs check and you will land in New York at an international terminal and be cleared thru customs there.

Hmm 1.20 a liter + parking + airline fuel surge charge + border tolls/wait - I think you break even with both deals... Stick with Porter its better - less hassle cause its a smaller airlines and also the aircraft can not be left on the runway like Jet Blue's 737 b/c the Dash 8 does not have the long term energy to run an A/c on a tarmac for 5 hours.

Oh in todays Wall Street journal there is an article about fuel levels and Newark
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120840281771422115.html
See the Dash 8 which Porter uses is given clearance priority over other airlines such as Jet Blue and their 737 because they can fly longer if need be ... not say the Dash 8 is a tin can - but I think it will save time both at the Island airport (only airline there and at Newark) - in fact the Dash 8 is a better plane than the 737 because it uses a turboprop - a prop and a jet engine while a 737 out of Buffalo uses only a jet.
Try it out and see for yourself - no one wants to fly out of YYZ after they go Porter or Buffalo.
None of the flights examined in the report landed with less than the minimum quantity of reserve fuel mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration. But the report cites two internal Continental memos, in February and October of last year, urging pilots to reduce refueling stops when possible.
In a statement stressing that "safety is our top priority," Continental said it "doesn't cut corners on ensuring aircraft have enough fuel. We put on ample fuel at the start of each flight, and there is a significant reserve."
By declaring a fuel emergency or telling controllers they have "minimum fuel" aboard, pilots get expedited handling from traffic controllers. The FAA is working to clarify when pilots should resort to those phrases.
Though it sounds dangerous, the real losers are the passengers on other airlines that don't pull this crap.
As early as August 2006, according to the report, there were suspicions in a local FAA office that Continental pilots were using fuel issues as a "flight-planning tool" to avoid going to an alternate airport. Continental has about 70% of the traffic at the Newark airport, and it accounted for 65% of the overall fuel events last year.
Even if such incidents pose no direct safety threat to passengers, the report concludes, they create "a burden on the air traffic system and an extra distraction for controllers" in a busy region.

A few questions/comments:
A roundtrip ticket came out to $256CAN + change after taxes (which is the cheapest I have been able to find!). Before booking, I noticed it was to Newark airport, but I have no idea where that is.
My questions are:
1. where is Newark airport and how far is it from New York City?
2. Is there a subway or shuttle bus to transport passengers from the airport to NYC (and back again)?

1. Newark is in New Jersey and distance/time to travel there depends on how you get there.
2. I went to NYC for about a week and flew in and out of Newark airport.
Here are some reference points:

http://www.nysubway.com/airport/newark.html
I took the cheapest route and might have been the longest too.
-Went from njtransit bus at the airport (forgot the bus route #). Bus went to Newark Penn Station.
-I took the PATH Train from there up to 33rd street.
-Got off there and walked to my hotel near Times Square on 42nd.
This took me about 1.5 hours I think at the tail end of morning rush hour but was dirt cheap. Less than $5 I think to get into Manhattan. Bought myself a Happy Meal after. :D
If it's your first time, you may want to take the shuttle buses from the airport that takes you directly into Times Square or the Port Authority Terminal. Ask the employees there, they were quite nice and helpful.

Taxes should be applied by percentage, not by a fixed rate. If you buy a $10 cable and tax is $20, I don't think you'll be very happy with that.
Airport employees don't work for free, however there must be other ways to pay them for harassing passengers by ordering them to take off their shoes and to walk with bare feet to the detector gate. Yes you actually pay them to harass you like Matt Dillon did in the movie "Crash".

The taxes to fly out of Pearson are ridiculous! I flew out of Buffalo 2 weeks ago to Louisville KY for $185.00 including taxes. A flight from Pearson would have been $460.00 including taxes. I live an hour to the peace bridge so when going to the US it's Buffalo for the savings.
We Canadians keep Buffalo going since it"s packed with Ontario plates whenever you fly out of there.

There is a monorail that goes from Newark Airport to Newark Penn Station.
From there you can take the NJTransit train to New York.
Easy and pretty fast.

Porter fights for U.S. flights
TheStar.com - Business - Porter fights for U.S. flights
FAA's proposed Newark traffic limit may disrupt fledgling N.Y. schedule
April 23, 2008
Chris Sorensen
Business Reporter
Porter Airlines chief Robert Deluce says his carrier's fledgling New York service may not be "viable" in the face of anti-congestion measures proposed for the clogged Newark Liberty International Airport.
The airline's schedule between Toronto's island airport and the Big Apple may be disrupted by the United States Federal Aviation Administration's efforts to reduce traffic at Newark, which is known for lengthy delays during peak hours.
Porter complains in filings to the U.S. agency that the "most important weekday and Sunday departure and arrival have been eliminated."
Other flights bumped to later in the evening will have to be scrapped entirely because of the Toronto City Centre Airport's restrictions on late-night operations.
Deluce said in an interview yesterday that the proposed changes, scheduled to go into effect later this spring, would effectively force Porter to slash the number of round-trip flights between the two airports to five per day from seven. "We would have never started up service in New York if we had any indication that we would only have five flights," Deluce said.
The changes, he added, will hit Porter disproportionately.
"The schedule they're giving us under the draft order is not viable," he said.
The airline argues it should be exempt from the new rules because its Bombardier-built Q-400 turboprops can land on the airport's shorter and less-used runway.
However, Robert Kokonis, the president of airline consultancy AirTrav Inc., said he doubted Porter's argument would hold much sway with U.S. regulators.
"They will look around and say, `We've got a whole bunch of U.S. carriers that are suffering right now and we've got to spread around some of the pain,'" he said.
"I don't see where they would necessarily favour Porter over the domestic U.S. carriers."
The aviation agency has already limited traffic at other New York-area airports, including La Guardia and John F. Kennedy International, because airlines continued to add flights during peak hours despite air and ground space shortages.

...I called Porter today..they said if they lose any flights at all it will be a maximum of 2 lost per day (keeping 5 flights per day) and only in the busy "summer" months. They say they have a strong case with the US authorities as they can use a runway that jets can't use and therefore don't contribute to the congestion. It'll hit the papers once it's finally decided but still 5 flights/day ain't bad and should you book one of the cancelled flights they'll call/email you and change you to a flight of your choice (earlier/later) at no charge.

I am not worried about them giving me another flight at no charge. I am more worried about having to re-arrange my schedule (everything is set). People are going to be waiting for me. I am scheduled on the last flight to come back to Toronto. I really don't want to have stay overnight and look and pay for additional lodging.

Gotta love the low taxes on that $79 fare - $20. Even though that's like 20% in taxes/fees. What Pearson charges should be criminal.
Jetblue is $79.00 each way from Buffalo to NewYork (JFK) or $199.00 including taxes.
