Found a couple old threads, but nothing with any useful information about who offers decently-made offset umbrella's. Anyone here have an experiences with them?

So far, just from shopping around, I've found;

Home Depot - $150 - mostly metal, looks pretty solid, but the base is plastic, ugly, and even the store display model base already looks crappy.

Rona - $130 - lots of plastic, looks like junk

Terra - $120 - the best I've seen so far, and the cheapest!

EQ3 - $250 - haven't been to see it yet, ad says it's brand new

Anywhere else I should look? I'm willing to spend more to get something that will last, and that looks nice.

Burlington man....I assume you're talking about this type?

Head down Plains Road past Ikea to Jamies Office furniture at 355 Plains Road East. Jamies sells office furniture, patio furniture and also pool/spa supplies. Small plaza, dark green sign with white lettering

They had a really good one last year, but they told me to hold off until this year, when they were going to bring in a far better unit, for same price.

Here's the best part.....if you own your own company, he will write up your receipt for office furniture and you can write it off.

Many business owners, including myself, have bought very nice patio furniture and submitted invoices for Office furniture
- easy to do when the receipt is from Jamies office Furniture.

Same business owners buy pool and spa supplies, and get receipt for office cleaning supplies. ;)

Service is excellant, they let us take a a few pieces home to see if they would fit on the deck, free delivery, they were never in any hurry for payment. they've been around for ages.

We bought a really nice office furniture suite last summer but as you can see we opted for the awning instead of the offset umbrella.....

I bought the one from Terra last year and am happy with it. I do still have to get hubby to put it under the interlock though. Right now we are using two rectangular patio stones to hold the base down. It's very strong.

mlc....I love your deck!

Oops...I forgot...the one we had from CdnTire the year before didn't make it.....we call it the disposable umbrella :(

Mlc -thanks, I'll check out Jamie's this weekend. The tax scamming bit is a turn off for me, though. If they're unethical with tax stuff, who says they won't treat customers the same way, given the opportunity?

3weddings - I thought the Terra one was self-supporting? The Home Depot one definitely is, I gave it a good shaking.

The one we bought is like the one in mlcs pic. It has two bars on the bottom with a lip that can be weighed down (like we have it now) or drilled into a deck/patio.

We bought one from Terra also. Like 3Ws, it is not self supporting. That said, we are quite happy with the build quality.

Will have to check out Jamie's sometime.

My wife is now telling me that the Terra one is indeed non-self supporting, so I was mistaken. She says that it looked like it comes with weights, though? The one in their display area has weights on it that look nice.

They still charge all the taxes, they will write up the receipt however you like.
They treat their customers like gold. I know lots of friends who've been dealing with them for years.

Here's a 11 ft one from Costco.ca for $800:

Considering the price difference from the hardware stores, it must be pretty good.

Correct, they have decorative weights that are matched in colour. It will take up to four and they are sold separately. We have two and it is quite sturdy(sp).

Went to Terra last night to have a closer look...it's more expensive than I thought, the weights are $30 each, and you need four of them, so total is $250.

They look decent, though, mostly metal, and the base is way nicer looking than the Home Depot one. I'll have to poke around the other places this weekend.

We have only two weights and find it quite stable, which could save you $60.

Do you have them kitty-corner to each other?

Is it made of aluminum or steel?

Depends on where we place it, but generally kitty-corner. The base is wide enough that two seems to provide enough weight to be stable. That said, we don't have it open when it is really windy.

Thanks, I think we'll try that, unless we find something better this weekend.

The one at Jamies was about $699 if I remember correctly but it looked a hell of alot sturdier than the HD units.
