Has anyone heard about Community Protection Canada? I'm receiving automated phone calls from them about a free security system in exchange to an ad sign on my lawn. (By the way, the promo code is G19). Phone: 1-888-976-8666.

But I cannot find any info about this company and it's "ungoogelable". Scam or not?

(All I want is for them to stop calling me, but I was wondering how legit this company is.)

Thanks.

They're probably a startup. Call them and ask them to remove your number from their calling list.

These guys are usually quick fly by night operations that "phone drop" their security offer into towns across North America. I own a security company and they have just entered into our area. Typically they come in for a quick cash grab to make as much as they can from the local ecomony and then move on, offering no after sales service of any kind. Typically their installation teams are not monitored or managed in an effective way, leaving customers with many lack lusture installations and negative feelings. There are reputable ADT dealers out there, and I suggest that you should contact a local dealer with local serivce you can trust should you be looking to take care of your safety needs.

After 8 years of being in this business, we have seen many of these operations come and go. I would be wary when choosing to deal with them.

This is just another name for APEX DIRECT. They are an Authorized ADT Dealer. What this means is that they find potential customers, promise them the world, tell them anything they think they need to promise to get the order. Soon as the system is installed and the paper work sent to ADT they get a big fat check and are then pretty well out of the equation. Lifetime warranty and free service is somewhat of a joke - batteries are not covered, the tech takes weeks to arrive, and frequently return visits are required. After all, when you are doing the call for free how much stock can they afford to have on the truck and just how well trained can the technician be?
And there is no need to have the yard sign - just tell them you want the system - they don't really care about the sign - it is just a ploy to get their foot inside your door and their hand in your pocket.

Beware if they say they have people standing by to do the install - they just flew in to town in the middle of the night - get it - "fly by night!"

Remember that in Ontario you, the consumer have ten days to reconsider any contract that is signed in your home as a result of a door to door or telephone solicitation. If you really want to screw them up, let them install the system in the next couple of days and then before ten days go by, give them verbal and written notice that you want to back out of the agreement. Then call a local monitoring company and get the system monitored.

By law, they have to tell you in writing that you have ten days to cool off and reconsider the deal. They have to - by law - let you out of the contract. If they tell you they want to remove the equipment that is their right and they have to return your home to the same condition as it was prior to them getting there. Usually they will abandon the equipment and go away.

Deal with a local company of your choice. These guys are not local. I received two calls, two different voices, both claiming to be Jeff Green. He does not exist. Said he was right here is Sarnia at 159 Fredrick Street. Problem is there is no Fredrick Street in Sarnia. And their toll free number is provided by some company out of southern California.

Buyer beware on this one!

Also check the bylaws for alarms in your area.

In Calgary, if you do not have an "alarm permit" you will be fined $10 000 if emergency services are dispatched to your home for a false alarm and you are not able to produce the permit if asked to.

Your alarm company should file for the permit on your behalf as part of the install process.

Anyone else want to create an account and make this the topic of their first post?

I don't disagree with what was said. There are a lot of craptastic alarm installers out there. Unfortunately a lot of them seem to be associated with ADT. I had it happen in a community I work in.

I had one client of mine tell me that the salesperson told him that the batteries in the wireless units will last 5+ years. Good joke. Tell them what they want to hear, get the cash and move on.
