What would be a reasonable price for painting the interior of a house (Oakville area)> More specifically the area above a stairwell with very high ceiling.
thanks

You can hire a painting company to come and do the job and charge you based on the job or you can be the contractor yourself and hire painters and get pay them by the hour and get them to do exactly what you want them to do.

I just had my place painted (2900 sq/feet) and hired two professional painters (yeah professional) at $12.50/hour and got them to do all the areas which I couldn't reach (or didn't wanted to reach). Once they started to paint, it seem liked it was going to be soooo cheap compare to the quotes I got from contractor that I let the guys paint the whole house even though I had planned to paint it myself. I ended up paying $1000 in labor and $500 in paint, while i had quotes for over $4300.

Good luck.

Where did you find the professional painters? yellow pages? referral? 12.50/hr is a very good rate I imagine. Do you think that's the going rate?

I think your "professionals" worked for free. But kudos to you for getting an amazing deal.

We all need a gig like this one and do three houses a year and chill.
My painter that I have been using for the last 4-5 years charged me $130 for an 8hr day.

To meet a timeline I used someone else earlier this year and was charged $1200 which included paint (he owned a BM store). My kitchen, which has very little paint area, family room with really only 2.5 walls, and the main hallway which opens into the second floor as well as the second floor hallway. ***** was his price did not include trim. My fault for not crossing all "t's" and dotting "i's".

Can you give us their contact information?

I will PM you their phone numbers when I get home this evening.

My original plan was to paint myself with my father-in-law. However, two days prior to easter long weekend, I ran an ad on the craigslist for painters @ 10.00/hour hoping to get couple of students to help me paint as well. However, I ended up getting two individuals who knew what they were doing. Each of the guys didn't know each other. They brought their own rollers, ladders, etc. I ended up paying one guy a bit more then $10/hour and the average was about $12.50.

As for going rate for painters, I don't know, but when I ran the ad, I had 6 people responded and 4 of them were willing to come for $10/hour and two wanted $15.

Sorry I cleared some space. With the TV group buy we had going my inbox was filling up quickly. Also when you posted on Craigslist what did you post? And how much did you specify for painters?

12.50 an hour for painters? Definitely not the going rate! Were they bonded and insured? What quality of paint? What kind of guarantee and workmanship? That's less than half of what reputable painters charge.

One thing to keep in mind . . .

If you hire a ligitimate company to work on your house, they (should) have their own workers compensation insurance. (Always ask to see thier certificate). If you hire random guys off the street, and one of them falls off the ladder and hurts himself, they sue you for lost work time, damages etc, etc.

So if you are a painter please post your hourly wages. If not and you know what painters charge please post them.

Off course they were not from painting companies and had no insurance or provided any guarantee...that is why they got paid what they did.

On craig's list I was expecting to get students who would be interested in helping me paint and make some money on the weekend. But these guys who called all said they they paint on their jobs and are between jobs. I figure they couldn't be worst then a student, so hired.

Worked out for me in the end.

I supplied my own paint. I also supplied by brushes and rollers however, they also brought their own stuff as well.

Leafs and others, I will send you their contact details.

We are a professional painting team and we generally charge about $200 per day per person for straight painting. A day can be anywhere from 6-8 hrs. Ceilings, cabinets and trim work generally cost the most. Trim work is expensive because it is mostly brush work. We bring all our own supplies. We usually don't include the paint in our estimates because we buy it as needed and pass our contractor price onto the client. That way the client is not stuck with an abundance of unused paint. Most contractors don't want to be on the hook for not estimating enough material so make sure they have more than enough to finish the job. We also use top quality paint and not the contractor line (i.e Moorespec, Sico Contractor, etc.) Even though a paint may be by a reputable company like Benjamin Moore, there are different levels of quality. Moorespec is the lowest quality in the Benjamin Moore line. An excellent paint is the top-line Sico. Besides being Canadian-made, it goes on beautifully, has a long life and wears extremely well. The top-line includes Sico Cashmere (walls), Sico Shantung and Sico Chamois (walls and trim). I've found this paint comparable to Farrow & Ball. Benjamin Moore has just released its Aura line which is also a very good paint but is pricey. It promises two coats to cover with Red (which is notoriously difficult to cover with) Para is another good company. Sico, though, is the only Canadian one and has always been our pick. Its available at Rona and other fine paint stores. Whatever you do, make sure that your wall and trim prep is done properly. Otherwise, that beautiful paint job might only last 6 months before problems start showing up!
